    DMB Construction
I made two deposits totaling $10,000. Destroyed my patio and left a huge pile of rubble. Now I have no patio and no addition. Now he is ghosting me-- will not respond texts or phone calls. Discovered that he did the same thing to someone else in 2016-- he is an unapologetic thief.

We wanted to build a relatively modest, energy efficient home, a style not found in the usual high-end development. The problem was finding a building site. Jason, the company representative we worked with, was very helpful in assisting our search. We found some undeveloped land and were set to move forward, but in the process of investigating the new community we found a nice, well-maintained house in a very pleasant neighborhood. While the house doesn't match what we wanted to build, it's a good place. Ultimately it came down to a decision between building on a rural lot or buying in a leafy neighborhood. Ultimately, "neighborhood" won out, at least for now. But the desire to build remains. Payne & Payne has a reputation as a high-quality builder. We went with them in part, because they were building a custom home that matched what we had envisioned. We did a walkthrough of the partially completed structure and were impressed with both the design and the quality of the workmanship. We liked it very much. Jason was great to work with. He is knowledgeable about both construction and design. He was quick to understand and help us articulate what we were wanting to build. We were very comfortable with the process. Our interaction was a collaboration. Had we not found the other place, we would have confidently moved forward with the building project.

The driveway came out excellent, now we are able to get a basketball hoop for my son and not worry about driving up the stone driveway in the winter time.  The garage keeps our cars nice and warm!!

    Pepperwood Signature Homes
My overall experience was super positive. Chris communicated well from beginning to end. My wife and I have built several homes. This project was for our son. Chris was by far the best builder we've worked with. He took an idea for a custom and quot;dream homeand quot; and turned it into reality at a fair price. Chris and his team get very high marks because they deserve it. Also, they are on the cutting edge of the latest in and quot;greenand quot; and energy efficient technologies. Chris was a pleasure to work with and I would highly recommend Pepperwood Homes.

    Desborough Construction Inc
This was very disappointing, I called this company and left a voicemail probably three times before finally sending an e-mail mentioning my frustration. Immediately the owner contact me with his cell phone number and told me to contact him directly. Our initial conversation was very pleasant and I was reasonably convinced that this was a good company to deal with.
Those three sentences are the last of the positive things I have to say about them. First, I made an appointment to meet the owner on a Saturday so he could give me an estimate on some work I wanted done. I generally don't agree to take my time on weekends however he said it was the only available time he had. Two days before our meeting he canceled stating that he had to watch his kid play basketball or something. I have kids, I understand, however I have run a business for 16 years and I would not consider that a valid reason to blow off an appointment.
I have since contacted this company a couple of times trying to reschedule and the owner never called me back. My personal opinion is either these guys are so successful and in demand that they don't need the business or just bad business people. I joined Angie's list so I can avoid the aggravation of dealing with bad contractors. Occasionally one slips through.
No doubt the owner will respond to this with some lame response that he made several attempts to contact me which would just be untrue. I really don't care what the reason is, no one is so busy that they can't return a phone call within 24 hours. I mean that quite literally No one is so busy they can't return a phone call within 24 hours. I'm in the financial services business and I have a trauma surgeon as a client who will return my calls within a few hours... no matter what. I guess he's not as important and busy as the contractor.

    March 1, 2013

Ordinarily I would not dignify such a childish response with any kind of a reply however because this contractor chose to call me on my cell phone to berate and harass me about the review I left I think it's necessary.

The review I left for desborough construction was 100% factual, is supported by the other negative feedback to this contractor, and made no personal attacks about the company's owners. I merely stated that they must be very important people because they can't find the time to return phone calls. I don't care if this guy was vacationing on Mars, send me an e-mail. When I am called out of town I push a little button labeled "out of office" and anyone trying to contact me is alerted immediately of my absence and not to expect a return reply for sometime. This technology may not have reached Perry Ohio yet but I'm confident that if they look they will find it.

When I told him that I'm a high maintenance client I wasn't joking... I demand professionalism and character from people that I give my money to. Ask yourself while reading this Would you expect less? Why settle for mediocrity? Some of the projects I'm looking at will stretch well into the six figures, I'm not just going to hire some guy in a pickup truck to do this. Angie's list homepage actually says "why settle for lousy contractors? I agree :) if you think I'm out of line we probably shouldn't do business together because as confident as I am that the contractor will expect to get paid the at end the job I expect that they maintain a minimum level of class and dignity throughout the project. No matter how you cut in dice it a contractor works for you, not the other way around. Would you ever speak to your employer with a brazenly disrespectful attitude? if you did, don't be surprised if you get fired.

His irrelevant comments about me suing a city and therefore I must not be a trustworthy individual is so absurd that I question whether or not an adult actually wrote that. In the very small speck in the universe called Lake County Ohio I am practically a household name as a result of a very public lawsuit that I was forced to file against the local municipality. This was a business deal that had nothing to do with contracting and is incredibly irrelevant to our dealing. This form is supposed to be for legitimate feedback regarding experiences with members and the contractors they call. I'm fairly certain the good folks at Angie's list did not intend companies like Desborough to use it to attack the character of a particular member. Such actions are slanderous and defaming to one's character. The principal of  this company should be very careful about  unsubstantiated public statements he makes about someone whose only "crime" was to leave feedback he didn't like.

The end result is that I have called Angie's list and file a complaint for their  harassing me. Any additional calls from him will be met with a complaint to our local police department. I strongly recommend looking elsewhere for a contractor unless you have thick skin and are able to meet and surpass Desborough's morality standards.

Mike Boodon (sp?) of CTI was referred to me by mutual friend and real estate broker. I took possession of the space and immediately hired an architect to detail everything which was to be done including a cost estimate so I would have a guideline. CTI eagerly accepted my offer to bid on the job. I explained in great detail the time sensitive nature of this project and that he will need to be in communication with me in order to accurately bid the job because the drawings we submitted were primarily permit drawings and don't show a lot of detail. Anyone who is ever built anything that required a set of stamped drawings will understand what I'm talking about. I talked to Mike on Friday and he offered to come by first thing Monday morning and pick up the drawings. Monday came and went? No Mike. Tuesday came and he offered to come by with his apologies and I agreed feeling like things can and do come up so I can't hold them to any different standard than I would anyone else. I also made it very clear to him that these were the last set of drawings that I had. That in fact I was giving him my personal set of drawings, that I needed them to be kept in pristine condition, and return to me whether or not they got the business. He agreed and picked up the drawings. This was the last time I actually spoke to Mike until I insisted that he return the drawings. Several calls went unanswered and each time he promised that I would have an estimate for the work he failed to deliver. Finally he told me that a family member had fallen ill ( this is the kind of nonsense all contractors tell you when they don't want to do a job) and that he is real sorry but I would be better off having someone else do the work. Bottom line: CTI wasted three weeks of my time, refused to return my drawings, and is extremely unprofessional. Under no circumstance should anyone work with a company that gives you a hard time about giving you an estimate. These people were provided stamped architectural drawings to work with just like all the other builders. They were the only ones that couldn't even come up with an estimate. This was a very disappointing experience considering that they came as a personal referral from a friend. He can use them from now on. The most insulting aspect of the entire experience was that I told Mike that the drawings I was giving him would need to be returned quickly. After completely failing to to even give us an estimate, I asked him to return the drawings his words were "when I get time". This obnoxious arrogant behavior is the trademark of a bad contractor. When he wanted the business he could not have been nicer however when it was time to part ways he gets as petty as holding my drawings over my head. I asked a mutual friend to stop by and pick them up to avoid any confrontation and he agreed. Don't work with this builder.
