  • I phoned Tom about my damaged chimney and left a message on his answering machine.  He returned my call within 24 hours and set up an appointment to take a look on Dec. 05, about one week after my phone call.  He arrived promptly at the specified time.  Unfortunately, the cap that had been wrenched off the mount could not be remounted due to damage to the mount.  I knew the mount was damaged because I could see how mangled it was when I looked up from the ground.
    Tom was not certain he could find an identical mount due to the age of the chimney (a 1988 model).  He measured, took photos, and said he would see what he could do.
    Two days later, Tom showed up at the house with a new mount and cap.  He installed both.
    One of the things I appreciated about Tom was that he worked with me by his willingness to phone me at work when he was on the way to my house.  I did not have to take the day off waiting for his arrival.  I also was grateful that he was so up front about the cost.  I knew I was going to hire someone to do the work because I do not know anything about chimneys and therewas no way I was going on the roof.  I don't even own a ladder that reaches up there!  Tom was professional at every contact, easy to talk to, thorough in his explanation of what needed to be done, and finished the job with dispatch.
    I dealt with Tom's company years ago.  I phoned the company to have my chimney cleaned.  He came to the house and took a look at the job.  He asked me what I had been burning.  I told him that I used mostly well-dried oak from a tree that came down in my back yard.  He told me that the wood was burning clean and that I did not need to have my chimney cleaned.  He did not charge me.  I've never forgotten that.  I will phone him any time I have a problem with my chimney.

  • The other chimney- originally built for the furnace, but was never connected to it - was occupied at the time by a HUGE raccoon (said it was the biggest one they'd seen) and at least one baby. We decided to wait until the baby(ies) were able to climb out and then Century Chimney will return and make that chimney undesirable to them so they will move out and THEN they will put on the 2nd cap. I was pleased that the critters did not have to be destroyed. They were so professional and truly nice guys. Left the place s*** and span, too.

  • Gary and Greg showed up right on time to inspect and give me an estimate of cost. they put tarps down on my carpet to keep things clean. they showed me how to use my old fireplace damper, in case I wanted to keep it. I decided to go with a newer damper without any sales pressure form the guys. They were able to do all the work immediately, and were out in less than an hour. I asked for some advice on what type of logs to use and replacing the fireplace glass/screen covering. they offered to remove the old doors for me. I didn't grade them on cost because I didn't get quotes from other companies, so I have no comparison.

  • Gary responded promptly to my phone call to arrange the repair. He agreed to phone me at my workplace 20 minutes before he expected to arrive at my house so I wouldn't have to take a full day off work. He estimated arrival at 1:00 and was at my home at 12:55 (after phoning as planned). Gary explained that his company ordinarily does not work on prefab chimneys like mine, but since the cap was sitting on the roof right next to the chimney it would be easy to replace it on the stack. He did just that, gluing it down. He advised me that there was rust on the assembly that may require replacement for the complete assemble in a couple years. He assured me that I could phone him if the glue did not hold and he would refund my money and put me in touch with someone who repairs prefab chimneys. I wondered why I should pay $69 for glue, since no supplies were required. Then I thought of the advantage to me: I didn't crawl on the roof. I'd pay him again to do the same thing.

  • I had gotten two other contractors for animal removal from Angie's list. One contractor told me I had mice. The other contractor told me I had a raccoon and he suggested I call Ace Wildlife Services. I was very impressed with Mike at Ace Wildlife. He worked with me around my work schedule. He would come out early in the morning so that I could get to work on time. He had to come out three times just to capture all the raccoons. He definitely knew the raccoons behavior and just how to capture them quickly even when they tried to get away. The crawl space that Mike had to get into was extremely small. He did an excellent job of removing the animals and putting safe guards in place so that no more animals get into my house.
