The guy from Around the House talks out the plan, and what he is doing, and what he plans to do. All of the service he gave looks fine and works fine. I would use him in the future for little things.

    Roto-Rooter Plumbing & Water Cleanup
Broke up roots and had water running again in no time...Probably took an hour 1/2 from start to finish.  He(Jack Miller) stated  that they have 24/7 hours with NO overtime charge.  He made suggestions for using his rinse after roots began growing again and said we could call anytime to set up appt for that, which could be done once a year at $150...

Mr Rooter Plumbing of Wayne County
3 weeks after we moved in, the drain backed up.  I called Mr. Rooter at 9am.  Made an appt for 2-4PM but he was able to come by noon. The plumber was clean and courteous.  He quoted the price before he started and that was the price he charged when he left approximately 4 hours later even though the clog was not where he first suspected it to be.  It was a lot of backed up sludge from improper use of the the garbage disposal before we moved in.  He cleaned up any mess he made. Although it was pricier than I anticipated, it probably was no more expensive than a plumber that charges by the hour would have charged and at least I had the option of saying No before he started had I wanted to.

The worker showed up and stated that he was in a hurry. He said that he would see what he could do about unclogging the drain. After four or five attempts he said that he couldn't get the drain unclogged and did not know what was the cause of the clog. He did offer to contact someone else who had a scope (150.00 Charge) and could scope the drain to possibly locate the clog. The worker said that he had to catch a plane and had to leave. He handed me a 115.00 bill for his attempt. He stated that is what the owner of the company charges.
The worker used a very old "snake" and said that he paid a couple hundred dollars on Craigslist for it. The drain that was clogged was located in my garage and should have been a simple run. Again, he said that he was out of time. Reluctantly, I paid the bill and thought I would just contact the company and have them send someone out to either put a little more time in the job, since the first guy was there for less than 20 minutes, or give me a reduced rate since they "ran out of time that day."
I made contact with the owner after days passed. I left her numerous voicemails before she finally returned my call. She had attitude with me from our very first contact and said that she would see if she could send someone out. I explained to her that if someone would come out and at least attempt to unclog my drain, I would be fine. No one was ever sent out and she refused to return my calls. During my conversation with her, I inquired about the companies certifications. She immediately gave me attitude and said that they didn't need to be certified. She could not tell me where her workers gained their experience and she did not tell me that hey were even insured.
Before the worker left, he said that she was running the company into the ground and that she receives lots of complaints. This was such a bad experience because Drain Wizard is a local company and is a small outfit. I try to give my business to local companies and help out the little guy. I think I will be sticking with bigger outfits who are insured and actually care abut their name.
**The check I had written to her was cashed the next morning first thing.**I will be taking her to small claims later this month.**

I hired Rick because of the good reviews on Angie's List and because it is hard to find a carpenter to do smaller jobs. I wanted a small closet wall torn out to open it up for my washer and dryer. This would involve demolition, drywalling, some electrical, plumbing, and flooring. The previous owner had run plumbing to the closet for a very small washer/dryer unit, so it needed to be re-routed. He gave me an estimate of over $900. In hindsight, I should have gotten some other estimates, but I wanted it done quickly.
In the beginning, I had confidence that Rick could do the job, or I wouldnt have hired him. However, the first day I started realizing that he had no idea what he was going to do. He kept changing his mind about where he was going to put the drain pipes, the electric; how he was going to cut out the wall, etc., and it became clear that he had no plan whatsoever and just seemed to be winging it.
The drain pipe for the washer was very unprofessional looking, and the idea of the way he was running the drain was ridiculous. The final thing was when he said that what he would like to do is tie in the dryer vent to the furnace pipe so it would run up through the roof (the furnace pipe is no longer connected to the furnace but it is the exhaust pipe for the gas hot water tank). Although he then said that it probably would not be up to code. That is what confirmed my thoughts that he did not know what he was doing at all.
I have hired professionals before, and never have I encountered a situation like this. In addition to the unacceptable work, he chose to tear down the old plaster walls, throw it on the floor, and walk all over it, grinding it into my old hardwood floors, even though I left floor coverings in the room. Most professional people come with their own floor coverings and cleanup tools, and they clean up at the end of the day. Reluctantly, I didnt say anything at the time because I thought if he did a great job, I could overlook it. I could not sleep that night and decided that I did not want him back in my house. I called the next morning and asked that he not come back to finish the job, and I put all of his tools on my from porch for him to pick up, which he did.
I then received a bill for $626.50 for that one day! Billed separately for electrical and plumbing work for 7 hours at an average rate of $72.14/hour plus parts and tax! I later contacted my brother who is a licensed plumber, and he was shocked at the charges and the poor workmanship as well. I sent a check for an amount I felt was more than fair - nothing close to $72/hour. My brother has since completed the job, having to undo everything that was done previously, and it turned out beautiful and better than I had even hoped.
NOTE: Rick is NOT A LICENSED PLUMBER OR ELECTRICIAN and certainly does not warrant $72/hr, in my opinion.

They were nice enough people but I won't call them again.  I am not questioning their honesty at all but they need to consider how bringing a "crew" that doesn't stay together in someone's house can be disconcerting to some.  And charging me that much for simple toilet clogs and then dripping poop through the house was not great customer service.  I'm going to get my own auger!

    H & H Plumbing Heating Cooling
I had a water heater replaced (non-emergency) in July 2011. They were able to schedule the work in about a week around my schedule and would have been sooner if I had been available. The installer showed up on time but the water heater ordered was not what would work in my application. He managed to get the right one and get back and install it the same day. Price with installation was reasonable in my opinion considering it involved completely replacing the vent system piping with another type all the way outside which was not what was expected.

I had the same company replace my furnace and air conditioner about 8 months prior. They showed up on time for the estimate and installation and provided the best quote when compared to 2 other vendors. The installers (Randy and Jim) were as good as anyone could hope for. They were very careful to cover anywhere they would be walking with drop cloths and completely swept up any debris left over. The install took under 2 work days for heat and ac, (removal and furnace install on day one, AC install on day 2). No surprises on price compared to quote. I did have a problem with the furnace fan about a week later but they were back to fix it within 3 hours of the time I called. The problem was from manufacture and not the installation. No problems since and I've had it for 11 months now.

    Fire Side Homes
We had started tile replacement in front of our house at the beginning of the summer. We dug by hand until a wall of dirt collapsed making it impossible to finish the project safely.
From our first phone call to Matt Emerson, he was professional and knowledgeable. I talked to him on Tuesday afternoon and he was at our house on Thursday morning at 9 a.m. to do the job. He described how to correctly finish the project. (We had thouroughly researched tiling before we began.) He brought another worker and a small backhoe to finish the job in one day. (The temperature was 97+ that day, too!) He also brought in and loaded a dumptruck with the discarded soil. His team worked steadily and cleaned as they went.
The price was reasonable, but the other companies weren't able to give us price quotes, so we're not sure how the price compares. Having started this project ourselves, though, I believe what we paid Fire Side was well worth it. We could have saved a lot of time and trouble by hiring them in the first place.
We are very pleased with the results and highly recommend the company.

I have had him do several jobs over the years.
    1. I call and schedule an appointment.
    2. He shows up on time and gives me a free cost (not an estimate, the actual cost.).
    3. He promptly schedules a time to do the work.
    4. He does the work well.
