I have had Independent Health as my health insurance provider since I started my current job (about 1.5 - 2 years now). They have been very helpful whenever I have had to call with a question, which is rare because they have a very user friendly website. They take a very active involvement in there members health and wellness having many different options ( i.e. debit cards that can be applied to gym memberships) for their members.

One doctor ordered an MRI which required pre-approval which Independent Health denied me. Their explanation was that I had not given physical therapy enough of a chance to see if that would help, even though I had attended several physical therapy appointments. I was miffed at the time when they denied the MRI, but in hindsight it probably was the correct decision because my back slowly, slowly cleared up on its own -- probably because I stopped going to physical therapy and just allowed it to heal at its own pace.

They have always been good through the years. I have been having them for many years in that they cover lot things. But lately I have been having a lot of medical needs and that is why I retired too. Instead of covering the cost of things now they are putting things like co-insurance payment and instead of having co-pay you also have a co-insurance payment for which you are responsible for. I have been getting injection in my hips because I have bursitis in my hips. Instead of just covering the cost which they used to do, they covered the full cost of full hospitalisation but now if you get an injection you pay the co-pay and you are paying the co-insurance pays. Actually the doctor wanted to do MRI on my back as I have Massimo arthritis in my lumber and cervical areas and Independent Health denied my MRI which really irritated me. As a nurse one of my jobs was to work for the Department of Corrections and when they needed an MRI they got one of the portable MRI machines on Saturdays for whoever needed the MRI. You cannot get one now when l am rightfully paying an insurance company. Whenever you want something from more than one area they put it under review. They say that I did not go physical therapy, when I have been going for it forever and the bills have been submitted to the insurance company right along. Then my doctor had to put an appeal and they tried to fight it. I used to think very positive about them. I guess I thought they were great because I did not use them that much before. But now that I have to use my health insurance and having to pay the extra co-insurance pays which I think is ridicules. So do I have the co-pay or co-pay in an insurance pay. Now I have to pay $20 for my PT every time I go, I have to pay $20 for the doctor's visit, now I am paying co-insurance pays on top of the co-pays. So it is $100s a week. I have had surgeries before where I did not have charges and I was happy with it .Now that I have to go to the doctor regularly I just don't think these co-insurance pays are fair. The co-insurance is not deductable but you to pay to get a payment without paying any claims. You pay the provider a co-pay and now you have to pay the insurance another co-pay to get them to do their part and they are doing it for each claim. So it is an added charge. As for communication I got a letter which said that I have a couple of days to do some kind of appeal and I received the letter after the date for the appeal. Even though my doctor put it for appeal I would be denied again because it was not within those two days. As for their coverage I thought it was good but now I am not sure, I don't know if I am getting covered for MRI. As for billing I don't know because I am actually in trouble with billing. I want the same group to do my PT, my orthopaedics, and my arthritis. I keep getting these different bills and I pay every time I go. The billing people are nice. But sending the letter for the appeal without being in the time frame is a billing issue. I will continue with them.

They're like every other insurance company in that they fight every bill.

I had a medical condition and they called to check on me. Really rare to have that happen. Very nice.
