START TO FINISH CONSTRUCTION/BD GENERAL CONT INC
This was a really big, long job and so it was very important to the quality of our lives that the people in our house were nice to be around. Fortunately for us, Bruce only hires the best so it wasn't a problem. Our home was a pleasant place to be even at the height of the remodeling and our cats grew very fond of the workmen. (When they weren't installing the air-conditioning ducts that is - that was noisy & the cats hated it! Fortunately it only took a few days). Our house dates from just before central air became a fixture in American life and it was something we had always wanted but we thought it would be too disruptive to install. Bruce looked over our house & figured out how it could be done with minimal disruption, with two separate systems, one for the second floor and the other for the first floor and basement. It's made an enormous difference to our lives and we are having a wonderful time this summer what with having had AC installed last summer ( owing to me being a bit behind in writing reviews, I'm writing this review in summer of 2012 about work carried out in summer of 2011 - I suppose the upside is that at least the reader can be assured that all the work has stood up to a year of use with no issues!).  In addition we had a new boiler installed, our old one was a cast iron and would have continued to work for the next several hundred years without issue, but it was very wasteful with fuel and our new boiler has saved us a lot in heating oil. We also got a new larger hot water tank and a new electrical panel, our old electrical panel was a bit eccentric and eccentricity is not what one looks for in an electric system. Our new one is safe and fully capable of dealing with our electrical loads.
The basement remodel was very thorough, from the stairs to the length of the hall, the only room we didn't redo was the bathroom, which had been remodeled fairly recently. Everything else was made new. The stairs needed new carpet and a bit of fresh sheetrock on the walls and then the stair walls were lined with cork tiles to make a huge pinboard. The bannister was also tightened up. As I mentioned above, one element that Bruce added to our plan was a window in the den/guest room, so that we would be fully compliant with the local laws. To install the window a large pit was dug in the garden (without disrupting our plants) to sink a window well, which has a built in escape ladder for emergencies. And the added natural light makes the den a much nicer place to be. A glass door system was also installed into the den fireplace that is so nice we are considering getting one for the living room as well.  A part of the den was nipped out and turned into a large walk in craft cupboard lined with wire shelving. We love it, and well we should- Bruce designed it to meet our needs exactly. Another room was turned into a library, with built in shelves lining all the walls, and free-standing shelves in the middle of the floor (we have thousands and thousands of books), this worked out really well, the wooden shelves are very attractive (and Bruce built them to match the floor-to-ceiling shelves in one of the upstairs studies) and having a library makes a lot of sense for our house. We still have a lot of bookcases scattered throughout the house, but having the bulk of our collection in one place eases the pressure on the rest of the rooms. The workmen were very good about moving and storing our books while the work was being carried out, and they are all in good condition. The laundry room needed the most work of all, it was left unfinished and before Bruce came it didn't even have walls or a ceiling. Now it has walls, ceiling, flooring, extensive shelving and two large closets. It also has a workbench and Bruce figured out a way to fix permanent laundry lines for us, because sometimes we like to air-dry our laundry.  Bruce also sorted out a utility closet off the hallway, in its original state it gave him the willies (something about loose and exposed electrical wiring, he seemed amazed that our house hadn't burned down decades ago) and he not only made it safe he made it nicer and more useful as well with new flooring and shelving and a new door.
As you can probably tell, we don't know a lot about houses, or construction, and the great thing about hiring Bruce is that we don't have to. He is a very honest, hardworking, caring man and he takes care of everything. He organized the whole job, chose great contractors, supervised them perfectly, was right there every time we needed him, and we felt very secure and safe with the job in his hands. We knew everything would be done right, and would be done on time and for a fair price and during the whole long job we never had to stress about it or worry about anything, we could just get on with our lives and our own work, know that the house was in Bruce's capable hands. I totally recommend him to anyone looking for a hassle-free, drama-free contractor. He's awesome!
