First rate. Got a start time around a month off and even though there had been a lot of weather over that period, they were there on that day and cleared snow and swarmed the job. Completed it that day (except for gutters -- a different contractor came next day and finished up). The only thing I cannot comment on is price. My needs were urgent, my leaks were severe. I went with the company that the most people had personally recommended to me. I did not have the time to get multiple bids. It was a lot of $$ but I now have a primo roof.

It went great. To start, he called back, many others do not. I was concerned about loose shingles ripping and falling off, with all the storms we have been having. He understood my concern and came out first thing Saturday morning. There were no storms in the forecast , so we agreed the repair could wait until the next day. He was there before 8AM on Sunday and completed the job correctly. Another contractor wanted more than what turned out to be the final price, to just come out and look. No one else even considered coming until after the weekend. When I thanked him, he replied he was just doing his job.

Difficulty to reach by phone. Several calls needed. Needed to verify that they received contact twice. After delay in coming to give estimate of a week, 2 men showed up to evaluate project. Viewed roof from ground, did not go up on roof to inspect. They said they would send price in email. We were never contacted by phone or email with price despite 3 phone calls to answering machine to determine if they were going to send an estimate. May they decided not to quote. This was a straight forward rip off old material replace with new asphalt shingles on 2 story house with a peaked roof. East access to roof. We have no information about performance or quality because they did not give price or contact us after showing up to evaluate house. Why did they come in the first place.? Not professional in quoting or follow up.

On one particular flat roof, I have had nothing but leaks which caused interior mold and rotting wood! They came a few times, put some caulk in the flashing and that was it, but it never solved the problem, and this happened every year! I had to call a number of times before they responded and have had to call a number of times again, with no response. I told the owner when he came again that the roof needs to be replaced and redone properly and he has not responded. They also did another roof where they put in 3-3 1/2' of Ice Shield and then shingled the whole roof. Ever since then I get interior sheetrock damage from water seeping in from ABOVE the ice shield. The owner's comment was that the whole roof should have gotten Ice shield. HELLO!!! I don't think that their employees that worked here knew what they were doing. I would NEVER recommend them to anyone.

Nathan Nelson was very responsive, very professional, easy to deal with.  He coordinated the work, done by Joe and Loren.  The quality of Joe and Loren's work was excellent.  They cared about restoring my house to the way it was.  The insurance paid for it, but I was so impressed I've asked them to come back and do other projects.  They're not the cheapest outfit, but considering what I've gone through with other contractors in the past, I'd say they're worth it. I highly recommend this firm.

All seemed to go well with the new roof until the first rain storm. We have 4 sky lights, 2 in our kitchen ceiling and 2 in our porch roof. One of the kitchen units leaked and stained the ceiling paint, Both of the porch units leaked, one significantly causing a carpet stain. We called D & B and asked for a repair. They did come and did something. Another storm and more leaks. Another call and another  repair was made but not until I made a strong phone call stating I wanted it fixed. More leaks and more phone calls. No response this time. Frustration set in as several weeks had gone by. Leaks continued so I called a new contractor. It was then that it was discovered that the seals around the sky light glass had been damaged during the roof replacement. The new contractor sealed the glass.

Perhaps a year passed. We have an addition on the back of our house which has a small bathroom. Some folks visiting noticed that the bathroom ceiling was stained. A friend who is a contractor had a device that measures water content. The sheet rock was wet with water. A new roofing contractor was called. He discovered that the flashing around the bathroom vent pipe was damaged apparently during the previous roof replacement. The flashing was repaired and the leak resolved. Overall even though I have known the owner of D & B for many years before the roof job, I would not recommend D & B as I feel that in order to get the job done quickly and at a reasonable price, the workmanship was sloppy.

Overall the work done was good and they did an excellent job of cleaning up.  There were issues with the process and the final completed work.

There was difficulty in communication.  Several times they claimed to have called, but I had no messages.  As I dealt with different associates of the business, it wasn't clear what  were their positions and responsibilities.  However they were generally patient and considerate, especially as it took me some time to decide on a contractor.  They did change the start date several times which led to my not being available the last day of work.

I was disappointed that an area that was not supposed to be worked on was re-shingled. This small porch area was not included because the porch is being replaced next year and I wanted to wait to do the roof after the lower area was replaced. Also as I already had the necessary materials for that roof, it was additional material costs.

I also was surprised that they did not repair a hole in the roof soffit. The hole was there before the work, but I thought it would be fixed.  Unfortunately, due to family obligations, I was not able to be there on the last day to inspect the work prior to the contractors leaving.

I have contacted the company about these issues and am awaiting their reply.

    Update: February 2016

In November 2014, I contacted the company about addressing my concerns.  I was promised that the soffit would be fixed and that they would provide the drain for the porch.  I contacted them several times more without response.  May 26, 2015 a representative came to do an estimate on the porch replacement and I again was promised that the work would be done.  They declined to bid on the porch and never came back to do the promised work.

In addition, the porch roof has been leaking since it was done.  I had assumed that the roof wasn?t fully sealed because of my stated intent to replace the porch.  However the contractor who performed the porch replacement indicated that there appeared to be a problem with the flashing on the porch roof.  Upon closer examination during a rain event, it appears that the water is running down onto the porch between the outer siding shingles and the old clapboard below.

In December I sent a letter to the office requesting a written response and phone contact to schedule the promised work, as well as address the roof leak. I gave them 30-days to respond.  The only response I got was a message on my answering machine inviting me to call about their available deals on new work.  Thus I am updating my review and I will be filing a complaint with the Better Business Bureau.

This home improvement adventure went flawlessly thanks to the staff at J and A Roofing. The office personnel were friendly, prompt, and professional. Fred came to estimate the cost of the work and emailed me an estimate with details the same afternoon! He was also extremely helpful about working around my schedule. The workers came, they saw, and they conquered...meaning their work was done very efficiently and very well (my neighbor was so impressed by their speed and craftsmanship that she told me she wanted to come over to cheer them on). They were also polite to me and helped me when I needed to maneuver across the lawn to let the dog out. Within one day, I had a new roof, and the next day the dumpster was gone! I highly recommend J and A Roofing company and would not hesitate to use them again if necessary.

Fred Horowitz gave me an estimate on July 14 and the contract was signed on July 18. The installation crew arrived early on July 31 and the materials arrived soon after. By the end of the day the old siding had been removed, plywood and insulation was installed and they had begun installing the vinyl soffits. They were unable to work on Aug 1 but came on Aug 2 and installed the siding and completed the soffits. I am pleased with the appearance of the house and the workmanship. Several people have commented on it.

They did a fantastic job! The guy was very nice, fair, and always willing to listen and take our needs into consideration. His crew was very respectful of my property, leaving no mess when the job was completed. I would highly recommend them to anyone on the area.
