Auto Repair reviews in Saint James

    FORD OF SMTHTOWN
This review is based on a series of three repairs done by the provider. I have taken my this vehicle (F-350 Super Duty Diesel pickup truck) exclusively to this provider for service. The first was a routine NYS vehicle inspection. Within six months of that inspection I was driving down the highway when six out of eight wheel lugs on my front wheel sheared off. My wife and I could have been killed because they failed to properly tighten the lug nuts after inspecting the brakes on the car. I took the vehicle back and after some pushback they agreed to fix the wheel at no cost. They should have replaced the lug nuts and the wheel since an aluminum wheel is subject to having the holes enlarged when the wheel is only half attached when driving. They didn't even throw in a hubcap which was knocked off by the six broken bolts. I brought it back in in July 2015 for routine maintenance and they told me I needed a new oil pan gasket. I agreed to that work and some other items at a cost of $3,200. In November of 2015, the vehicle would not start. I had it towed to the provider. They claimed the found several pressure leaks and recommended several repairs (replaced dummy plugs in fuel rail, replaced ICP, etc.), total cost $2,974. When I got the vehicle back I drove it the next day a totol of 88 miles. The next day it would not start. It was one day out of their hands and it wouldn't start. I took it to another provider. They had to replace the same part Smithtown Ford just installed. Smithtown Ford claimed to have removed both valve covers, but the new provider pointed to one of the bolts holding it down and it was badly rusted with no sign of it haveing been disturbed to remove the valve cover. As part of their effort the new provider had to drop the oil pan and when they did, they found a bolt in the oil pan and the oil pick-up hanging loosely. Could this have happened during the oil pan gasket replacement (No. 2 above). Nobody else had touched the oil pan. The pointed out other deficiencies in diagnosis by Smithtown Ford. I met with the Service Manager at Smithtown Ford, Oliver Czavar, and explained my concerns bringing him pictures of what had occurred in the first issue (State inspection) and the last repair. His initial response was to challenge my credibility alluding that the photographs were fake, which I could have easily disproved by walking him out to the vehicle and letting him see for himself. At the end of our meeting he said he would contact Ford and see what he could do. I thanked him and left. I didn't hear anything for about a month or two so I called him back. He said he definitely hadn't forgotten about me and would call me back. It has been another two months with no callback from Smithtown Ford. While I ponder legal action against them, I wanted to help other subscribers avoid a similar fate to mine.

    BRUNO'S AUTO
Having had enough dealing with the dealer from whom I purchased the car, I searched Angie's list for another provider. I came across Bruno's in Bay Shore. Coming from Smithtown it was further than I would normally want to go, but I thought I would give them a try. Previous reviews stated that they specialized in Volkswagens and Audis. When I called, I asked about this. They were very honest and said they handled many types of vehicles and did not want to claim to be specialists in VWs. Fair enough.
tI made an appointment for the same week. It was a 100,000 mile service. I brought it in and about 90 minutes later they called me with the run down of what they were going to do and an estimate. They also noticed that my inspection was due and asked if I wanted to include it. I agreed.
They called in the mid-afternoon to tell me it was all done and reiterated their hours so I wouldn't come after they closed. I came down, picked it up and everything worked well. The only thing they missed was resetting the service interval warning on the instrument panel, but a quick Google search and I had the instructions on how to do that myself. Their prices are very reasonable.I might have paid nearly as much just for the dealer's labor. For topping off the fluids they charged $1. Where can you get anything today for $1?
I realize that I didn't bring them a challenging repair, but for what they did I am very satisfied.

    Appel Auto Service
Shop was immaculate which says something about Kevin's attention to detail. Kevin also pointed out some things that could use some attention on my car. An inspection shop can easily put you over a barrel but you can count on Kevin to do what is best for you. If you own a classic Mustang (or probably any other classic), this is the shop to use.

    Star Motors
I spoke to Paul (owner?) the day before to see if I needed to make an appt. for the services. He said that if I brought it in the next morning at 8am (when they opened), I'd be out in 45 mins.
It wasn't the easiest place to find... no sign from the road, etc. And once I found it and drove in, I was a little apprehensive due to the appearance of the building and parking lot. BUT I had read here on Angie's List that 'if you were looking for a fancy waiting room, etc. this wasn't the place, but if you were looking for a good mechanic, it was'... so I stayed. When I looked a little more closely at the cars that were in his parking lot (Mercedes', Saab's, BMW's), I felt a little better, knowing that the people that owned those cars must trust Star Motors with their high end vehicles.
I briefly went over with Paul what I needed done and he told me to give him 45 mins. I went next door to have a coffee and wait at Mc. Donald's, and walked back 40 mins. later and my car was done.
Paul drove my car around and apologized for the potholed parking lot saying that by the next time I come in his parking lot should be fixed.
And I will be back... in 5000 miles or 1/14... whichever comes first. :)

They are the most professional dealership I ever had. They are unbelievable. If I think that I need something done to the car, I would call them up and schedule an appointment. They take the car, fix it, and then drive it back home. They are very reasonable and they take credit cards.

    SMITTY'S GARAGE
I decided to spend nearly $800 to replace it along with thermostat and other related parts. The car was fine for a few weeks. Then it over-heated again. I brought it back to Smitty's expecting the car to be repairs for free under the warranty. I was told that their repairs were fine but other parts must have broken. To determine what was wrong would require them to remove the transmission. The estimated cost to diagnose was around $1K. They offered no options, no refunds, nothing but grief.

    Star Motors
I found Star Motors on saabnet.com. They came highly recommended so I gave them a shot. They really did a great job and were very professional. The price was also very fair. They asked if I wanted to use SAAB OEM parts or non-OEM parts. I will definitely use them again.

    TILDEN CAR CARE CENTER
Back in December of 2005, I took my car into get inspected. He told me I needed new brakes. When he was taking my hub-caps off he broke the spokes that hold the wheel. Then when he was finished my brakes didn't work. He did something to the steering as well the wheel would shake. I had to take my car back four separate times to fix the damage he did. I ended up having to buy a new car. That car is no longer drivable.
