AUnique Builders and Remodeling LLCRemodeling the kitchen was a project we desperately wanted but feared the most; and we decided to take it on before the holidays. It was the best decision we ever made! We gained use of a daunting empty wall, have more counter space, increased the overall functionality, and all our friends say the room seems larger and more spacious than before. Our original intention was simply to replace some countertops and get an idea of better use of one wall. Joe sat with me and my partner and discussed ideas which excited us. He suggested building a wall unit on the unused wall with utility closet, overextended counter top with the possibility of seating and a wine rack (quickly observing from our little counter rack that we liked wine). He was NEVER high pressure, but was full of a range of ideas and took his cues from us. When we asked questions he quickly made suggestions, but I really felt all final decisions of how shallow or deep to go in our remodeling was up to us. He provided us with detailed estimates that offered a range of options, and broke the project into component parts indicating which step should be completed together and options we could wait on, since finances was a clear concern. In the end we decided to “go all the way” and Joe walked us through every step of the process in a highly informed and professional manner. On two occasions we ran into unexpected “problems” (including old – pre-new roof water damage in one wall and an existing heating problem which he was able to solve); and Joe was clear and patient, at an obviously stressful time, about the options available for addressing the concerns. He detailed the best ways to solve the problem and left the decisions to us. Over time our trust in him and his thoughts grew completely, and we were more than happy to do whatever he recommended. He clearly worked h****** detailing his advance estimate and worked equally hard to stick to it, outlining places where our unexpected problems led to modifications in the expected expenses. In the end the quality of his work was amazing, he arrived every day as he said, he always left the house clean and ready to be lived in, and he was very friendly, professional, knowledgeable, and interested in our feedback on a regular basis. We are now thinking about a bathroom remodel and would look forward to working with Unique Builders in the future!- Lori C.

AThe Home GroupLooking forward to a week get away in the great ski country my family and I found our mobile home a disaster. While we were at out permanent home our pipes had frozen, causing them to brake not knowing we walked into a living nightmare. I found The Home Group's number in the phone book. They were over to evaluate the damage immediately at 8pm. They stopped the leaking immediately, and accessed the damages. They quickly handle my insurance claim rapidly and began the renovations. They worked late hours so I could still have my company come for the weekend. The completed the job in timely manner, not to mention the great work they performed. My kitchen is now my favorite part of the house to entertain. I get so many compliments and recommend The Home Group to all my friends and neighbors. FThe Home Groupsears actually came out 6 times, and didn't show up 3 times. at all 3 no shows, i had to have a welder on standby at sears insistence. the welder rearranges his schedule 3 times in order to be here. he never charged me.- Al W.

AMax is a terrific architect. Like many people during this quarantine, I’m thinking about building a deck for my yard. I’ve interviewed many architects and Max was by far the most responsive, thorough and patient architect. During the interviewing process, Max was the only architect who took the time to understand my project and provided advice. He also looked up my town’s code and informed me of my options. When looking for a surveyor, he took the time to speak w/ them and explain the request. I would highly recommend Max!

Business Description:
Preferred Exteriors and Renovations, Inc., is a full service siding specialists company owned by Duane Poole. Preferred Exteriors is a Rochester, Syracuse siding and general contractor that has extensive construction experience in residential and commercial construction. Chances are you have driven by some of the siding, roofing or drywall work they have performed and never even knew.
Recent Review:
AWe hired Preferred Exteriors (Duane Poole) to construct an addition on our house. The addition was 24x14, 2 stories with a basement extension of the same size. The job was for the framing, exterior and interior construction including hanging the drywall.
We completed the interior finishing (sheetrock finishing, painting, flooring, and trim) as a way to save money and we also wanted to match the existing trim and finish of the main dwelling. A lot of the trim work involved custom moldings of which we hand made.
After interviewing numerous contractors and obtaining quotes from all we decided to hire Duane and his crew.
Duane was very responsive with the quote and spent a great deal of time working with us to meet our very limited budget. While he was not able to get to our exact budget he was within a couple of thousand dollars of where we needed to be. Given the scope of our project his quote was exceptional.
We started construction in December of 2014 and completed construction in May of 2015.
Duane subcontracted the excavation, basement foundation, and electrical work. All were excellently done and we have not had any issues to date. We hired a plumber based on Duane'e recommendation and he did the rough-in for two bathrooms. Again an excellent job was performed and we have no issues. We have since used both the plumber and electrician for additional work because of their outstanding performance.
The majority of the work was performed by Sean Mulligan who is part of Duane's crew. Sean did an outstanding job which actually made the finish work much easier that I had anticipated. The overall framing was within 1/8" over the total 24' span. This made laying the hardwood floors very easy as there was no messing around trying to deal with out of square floors or walls. In addition to the framing, Sean also did the insulation, windows, doors, and a lot of the sheetrock. Sean was also very easy to work with. He kept us apprised of any situations he encountered and freely discussed with us any issues that we felt needed to be addressed. All of this was performed during one of the worst winters in CNY in decades. Sean is a real asset to Duane's team and I cannot speak highly enough of him.
The only slight criticism we had was that there was one occasion where communications between Duane and his siding crew was a little lacking regarding out of scope work that lead to some confusion. We had anticipated this situation when we started and discussed it with Duane but he did not tell this crew. This one situation required me to call Duane so he could remedy this of which he did immediately. So not a big issue.
Overall we are extremely happy with the work that they performed given the terrible weather they performed it in. They were prompt, worked hard, did outstanding work, (Thanks Sean!!) and showed genuine concern that we were happy with the outcome. I highly recommend them for a project of this scope.
