General Contracting reviews in Malba

    SenKep Contracting Corp.
Mark and Joe were phenomenal. They started and finished when promised, kept me updated on daily progress and had an incredible team working with them. They completely renovated the rental apartment in my house and added an additional bedroom. After demoing some walls they noticed old termite damage that was beyond repair and quickly thought of a solution. Their professionalism and workmanship are outstanding. The finished product exceeded my expectations and rented the apartment only 2 days after listing it.

    Schrader and Company, Inc
We hired Schrader because of the positive reviews, however I believe that the direction of the company has changed from restoring older homes to new construction. All of the men that did work on the house were professional, skilled and solution-oriented when faced with the many problems of an older home. However, the owners attempted a few times to attribute design problems to the "character" of an old home. At times we felt that our "small" six figure project was mocked because we were unable to fit their particle board/melamine cabinets and other high end finishes into the budget. Unfortunately, we mistakenly used the sales team as a design team. We were agressively sold an expensive subcontracted banister which was installed into stairs that will need to be rebuilt even after requesting that it should be done last only if the budget allows. If you use Schrader because of their excellent master craftsmen and woodworking abilities, use an independent design group that provides true to scale digital renderings and follows the project to finish. It is a conflict of interest to involve the sales team during the design process. Also, subcontract as much as you can on your own. We had many small electrical, plumbing, sheet-rocking and tiling issues that were never resolved because we didn't notice them soon enough. Overall, everything was built to code, and I'm happy with the outcome, but the project ran way over budget and aesthetic details were not resolved in a fair manner. Don't be fooled by google and Facebook reviews. They have negative reviews deleted.

    SenKep Contracting Corp.
Very well. They were professional and their workmanship was excellent. They gave their full attention even to the smallest detail. They clean up at the end of each day, are friendly and courteous. They keep you informed of everything they are doing as the job is moving along. If you want to smile every time you look at the work they have done for you, SenKep is the Corp. you should hire.

    Arta Construction
Everything went great. We are very happy with the finished product. Andy and his crew were excellent. We did have to delay our original start because Andy was still finishing his last project. While it is obviously better to start on time, I appreciated the fact that he did not want to start the project (which left us without a tub for the kids) until he was actually available to complete it, rather than start just to lock in the job and then drag the whole thing out as he juggles 2 different projects. The crew worked quickly and efficiently to get the job done fast to minimize the impact on our daily lives. Andy was very easy to work with, his price was very fair, and he was very accommodating to our needs, even when we had to have him stop a day of work due to an unrelated matter. Would definitely hire Arta again.

    Mr. Handyman of NE Queens
Larry Monte, Mr. Handyman of NE Queens was able to schedule his worker, Marco, to come to my house within 10 days of my call, on a Friday. When we further discussed the scope of the project and my desire to finish repairs before Christmas, he was able to send Marco at the beginning of the same week, on Monday, to start work, with the understanding that he could finish on Friday if necessary.

Marco was professional, cheerful, showed up exactly in time, and did a good job. He seems knowledgeable about a wide variety of home repairs. He is really very fast, so his time is worth a good deal.

Unfortunately, the estimate of $320 that Larry gave me over the phone was very rough (he warned me), and the job ended up costing twice as much, not including materials. An over-the-phone estimate is always difficult. But it did not include 2 hours spent going to Home Depot to purchase materials, at $80 per hour (he did not warn me about that). While it does make sense to charge for time spent on getting supplies, I didn't take it into consideration. Also, my husband was under the impression that Marco left at 5:30, but didn't write it down, and we were charged until 6:30. When I called about the discrepancy, Larry agreed to split the difference? giving me a free half hour towards finishing the project, which restored my confidence.

At the end of the day, we are very happy to have these repairs completed by Mr Handyman. We really needed an expert ? the repairs turned out to be tricky, especially with the old plaster, and we couldn't have done them ourselves. The patches need very little sanding and are ready to paint. I had planned to hire Mr. Handyman to do the painting as well, but spent a little bit more than expected and will need to wait or do it myself. That's okay.

I learned a few valuable things: 1) if I had purchased the sheetrock, tape, insulation, and spackle myself, I would have saved a 2-hr, $160 "delivery charge" which could have been applied to other work I need done. My local Home Depot charges $75 to deliver on a truck, so next time I'll still "save" $85 if I get the supplies. 2) When paying by the hour, write down the exact time the contractor starts work, leaves for supplies, and finishes work for the day. 3) Some costs may seem obvious to the contractor, but not to you, so don't rely on an over-the-phone estimate to budget your project, and have a 50% cushion, and don't forget about the taxes!

    Today's Total Home
Brian provided a detailed cost estimate for the work.  The work spanned two days and he arrived on schedule both days.  He is a very pleasant person and he gave me suggestions to consider on how he could do each of the jobs.  His work is high quality and he exceeded my expectations.  He cleaned the job site before he left.  I highly recommend chosing Brian Ward for your home improvements.

    Above & Beyond Carpentry Inc.
Mark took an old, really beat up, shed (rotted wood, crooked hanging doors and all)  and made it better than new!  He added all the "touches"! He even found an old plastic eagle in the eaves of the shed. He painted it black and added it to the front of the shed! He found us some "fancy" hardware to dress up the shed. He made my octagon windows! He did everything we asked and more and always with a smile! He took care of cleaning everything up. We are extremely satisfied with his work and plan on using him for all our repairs. Highly recommend him, but I'm hoping he doesn't become too busy making it hard to get him!!!!
