    Foster Custom Kitchens
    Recommendation: Foster Custom Kitchens, 212 S Albany Street, Ithaca, NY 14850. Andy Foster phone 607-272-8102 It is rare that you experience a truly ethical business person who stands behind his products and service. My experience would be unbelievable if it didnt happen. Seven years ago we bought new kitchen cabinets from Andy Foster. After one or two years of use, we experienced some lack of quality and I began calling the cabinet maker for some advice but never received an answer to my messages. I continued to call the cabinet supplier over the next several years with no satisfaction. Foster Kitchens designed and supplied the cabinets but didnt manufacture them, but Andy agreed that the quality should have been better. Since we dealt with Andy Foster, he made the problem go away, at his expense. We had three wood craftsmen working in our kitchen these past few days, one of which was Andy Foster, correcting someone elses poor workmanship. No matter whether a company is an IBM or a locally owned business, things dont always go 100% right. How those businesses correct the problems, is what makes the difference. I want everyone to know about the ethical business that Andy Foster of Foster Custom Kitchens is running in Ithaca. If you ever consider a new kitchen, Foster Custom Kitchens is the only place to go. DP Roofing & Construction
    DP Roofing is outstanding. Dustin and his team are knowledgeable, competent and reliable. They show up on time and do excellent work. They communicate costs and estimates clearly and in plain language, and they quickly communicate any changes in estimates as soon as they happen. With DP, my projects have stayed on budget, on time and the results speak for themselves. I have relied on DP for projects large and small--from painting and odd job carpentry work, to major structural work on the exterior of my house to roof repairs--and I've been extremely satisfied with everything they have done. These guys are truly professional. I can't recommend them enough!

    *Renowned Renovations*
    The project took about a week longer than originally planned because of problems with the supply pipes that weren't found until the work started. Renowned Renovations gave me a detailed explanation of the additional work needed. Their workmanship is excellent and they cleaned up thoroughly each day.

    Colgan Construction
    We agreed to a time and materials contract with Colgan Construction which was our first mistake. Brien's original estimate of the work was almost $75,000 which we wanted to work to reduce. He assured us that this was possible and we worked to remove some of the original scope to keep costs lower. However, the work dragged on with no end in sight and with us footing the bill. Whenever we asked Brien for an update on costs and an estimate of when it would be complete, he first promised a completion date Thanksgiving, which slipped to Christmas, then to the end of January and into February. At that time we finally had to fire him as we were out of money. There was scope creep on the job and when we asked him for estimates he consistently underpriced it, assuring us that he was familiar with old houses such as ours. Only after we were well into each change did we find out the true cost. Brien would get frustrated when we'd ask him for updated costs, which he heavily relied on his accounting software to provide. He didn't have an office manager to handle the paperwork so he was acting as general contractor, laborer, accountant and office manager. Further issues arose when we would receive Invoice summaries that included invoices which we never received. This only exacerbated the issue of us not ever understanding what the true costs of the renovations were to that point. Brien also took vacations/side jobs during the work on our house, which we were understanding of to a point. Vacation is understandable but it was sometimes weeks where we hadn't seen them working on our project numerous times. After months of the costs escalating we tried to renegotiate a flat fee for the remainder of the work which he refused saying that, given all the surprises the house raised, he didn't have the confidence to quote a flat fee. Additionally, cleaning labor was charged at the same rates as the contracting work which was expensive and unfair in our eyes. We asked him at the end of the job to stop cleaning so we wouldn't incur further costs and ended up cleaning the job site ourselves. At the end of the day, the job cost us 1.5 times the original estimate that we wanted to reduce in the first place! Overall, Brien did a good job with small projects but is woefully unequipped to manage a larger renovation such as ours.

    Norb Miller General Contractor
    Norb solved big problems for me with no fuss or BS. He worked quickly and arrived early every day. He offered helpful suggestions to do the renovation smarter and?followed up with regular consultations during the process, which went on for weeks due to arrival of new cabinets. After the?countertops and backsplash were installed by others, he came back to hook up the plumbing.

    *Renowned Renovations*
    It went well.  He was very thorough and easy to talk to.  I left town for two weeks and I hoped the shower would have gotten done while I was done but it wasn’t.  He splits his time between jobs.  It went a little longer than I thought it would.  He underestimated the quote but he was honest about not being able to estimate the other contractors prices.

    Weller Hardwoods Llc
    Mr. Weller of Weller Hardwoods, LLC agreed to complete work on our bathroom, including repairing problems, as well as completing unfinished work. He came once and completed several items on the ?punch list,? but left others undone. And is now incommunicado. Additional problems including cracks in the bathtub wall grout have shown up and we cannot use the sink he installed since the hardware is leaking and it is not properly attached to the wall.
    We will need to hire other professionals to complete the repairs and unfinished work, including
    1. additional grout work around the tub;
    2. repairing portions of the hex tile floor that have bubbled up;
    3. installing shoe molding around the perimeter of the bathroom;
    4.hiring an electrician to diagnose and repair the radiant heating systems;
    5. hiring a plumber to repair the sink and anchor it properly to the bathroom call.

    Lewis Building And Remodeling
    The provider is meticulous in his work.  Perhaps because of this, he is a little slow. Nevertheless, in all the jobs he has performed in my house, remodeling, painting, or repairs, I have been happy with the results.

    Crown Construction Inc
    It went exceptionally well. We had done a much more extensive remodel on a previous house, so we knew what to expect. Crown was professional, responsive, and flexible. They were willing to work with us in our desire to do some of the work and purchase some of our own fixtures. The craftsmen that were assigned to our project (Rob and Vlad) were outstanding!
    Some highlights:
    - We reused the high-end kitchen cabinets that the previous owner had installed. Crown took them out and reinstalled them better than ever.
    - We had an inspiration about how to finish one room with a built out ledge all the way around it. The new idea was smoothly incorporated into the finished product, and it looks great.
    - Communication was reliable and consistent.
    - Scheduling and negotiating with the trades (electric and plumbing) was smooth and without incident.
    - The job came in on time and a bit less than we anticipated.
    If you're not into playing the general contractor yourself, I  highly recommend Crown!
