When I first came to Dr. Freiman, I was very sick. Although I had been an athlete all my life, too much exercise and the wrong diet for my blood type had contributed to my suffering from fibromyalgia and chronic fatigue syndrome. I also had several severe emotional blows within the space of about 9 months, the stress of which caused various auto-immune disorders, including irritable bowel syndrome, irritable bladder syndrome, Epstein-Barr, depression and loss of appetite. Due to these, I weighed less than I did in Junior High School. I had little appetite, although I was not anorexic. I just couldn't keep food down. After blood tests and a colonoscopy with an internist, I was prescribed medicine to help the disorders listed above, but I needed to figure out what was wrong with my diet, because I wasn't able to stop losing weight, and I was trying to eat as healthy as I could. I had always maintained a fat-free diet, and had recently become more vegetarian style, eating eggs, fish or chicken only infrequently. I did not eat any red meat, and I had a kosher diet as well. My internist felt that a nutritionist would be helpful in finding the right foods to help me regain my health. I went to Susan, and my list of complaints filled two pages. I had never felt so sick in my life as I did at that time. As an athlete, my loss of muscle mass due to the diseases I suffered from was frightening. The fibromyalgia had forced me to abandon all my workout, except for a 10 minute brisk walk, if I felt up to it. Susan diagnosed a severe need for dietary fat and protein. She explained that fat was needed like oil is needed to lubricate the engine of a car. My blood type (O+) was not a good fit for a vegetarian. She insisted that I needed to start eating meat again, and fish as well. She found that I had sensitivities to grains generally, yeast, and nightshade vegetables. With a bag of nutritional supplements and very specific instructions, I was back on the road to health. It took a while, and more food sensitivities became apparent as others were eliminated. I also found out about various conditions which needed watching, including low blood sugar, low blood pressure with a resulting need for salt intake (I had always shunned salt), along with a huge need for increased omega 3, 6, and 9. I stopped trying to be a vegetarian, and became an omnivore again. Susan taught me the right portion size for various foods, and introduced me to the idea of nuts and seeds as an excellent source of protein, fat and calories. She even provided recipes! She is extremely understanding and receptive to my needs. She LISTENS. I have frequently recommended her to my friends, and I cannot emphasize enough how happy I am that I have had her advise and expertise to get me back to good health.
