    Upstate Orthopedics

I am writing this review because the staff at Upstate PT at Fly Road have been a shining example of what good PT--and compassionate health care--can be. I have prior experience with PT in other clinics, and the therapists and office staff here are easily the best I've encountered. In 2013, I saw Cassie Terpening (on land) and Jason (aquatic) to improve stability in my ankles, which were weak and frequently painful as a result of injuries and arthritis. For my knee, I've worked primarily with Caitlin Kelley, but I've also seen Karen Kemmis and Janice; (my apologies to Jason and Janice -- I've forgotten your last names).

All of these therapists' knowledge of anatomy, movement, and adaptive versus pathological pain is impressive. Even more impressive is their commitment to treating the whole person rather than just and quot;fixingand quot; isolated body parts. Although and quot;holisticand quot; is an overused buzzword, it truly describes the treatment approach at this location of Upstate PT. These therapists understand that improving the body's functional and structural integrity requires attention to multiple, interacting body systems. They appreciate that each of these systems may develop its own and quot;issuesand quot; as a result of sustaining an injury, living with the injury until surgery, and adapting after surgery has been performed. They are attentive to pre-existing strengths and weaknesses and consistently incorporate them into treatment--a far cry from cookie-cutter, one-size-fits-all PT. And they pay attention to their clients for the entire therapy period. This attention means that if I do an exercise incorrectly or experience unusual pain, they are right there to identify the problem and address it.

Finally, these PTs understand the psychological impact of physical injury and pain, and the difficulty of facing related changes in physical appearance and ability. They are encouraging and optimistic, but realistically so. They have been phenomenally supportive as I've struggled to manage the landslide of stressors that resulted from my injury and delayed treatment. And they've been unbelievably patient as I come to grips with the fact that I no longer have the legs of a dancer and get winded from climbing stairs--while strongly supporting my desire to change both of those things.

In 2005, I climbed the second-highest mountain in Wales. In 2010, I rock-climbed to a beautiful canyon in New Mexico, climbed a cactus-studded hill (very carefully), and then walked a mile back to my lodging. When I climb the (many, many) steps to Parc Guell and Sagrada Familia in Barcelona in 2015, it will be in large part due to the great care that I have received at Upstate PT at Fly Road. I can recommend them without hesitation to anyone in need of high-quality physical therapy.

p.s. Re: Nuts and Bolts -- They are usually fully booked, so changing an appointment can be a challenge. But the staff who do the scheduling are well-organized and considerate, and they really try to find a way to fit you in, even if you need to reschedule at the last minute. And this location (Fly Road) seems to have most of the bugs worked out of its corner of the EPIC record-keeping system!

    Harley, Dr. Brian J.
He explained things carefully and he is caring.  You don't get a lot of time with him, but if you have questions you get the time.  He was very careful to monitor my condition because I am almost 70 and I broke a bone all the way through.  He wanted to make sure that it healed all the way through.  He also monitored my physical therapy as well.  The office is very efficient and unusually punctual.  I have never been to an office that was as punctual as this one is.  They are also very nice and friendly and they treat you very well.  I will continue to use this doctor in the future if needed.

    Scuderi, Dr. Matthew G.
He is extremely funny and makes you feel very comfortable. You have the utmost confidence in what he is doing and he is just a really nice man and his staff is very friendly. He tells you everything he is doing before he is doing it. I would continue to use his services in the future.

    Tallarico, Dr. Richard A.
I have had several surgeries from him, back surgeries that have been very serious and difficult. He is a master doctor. He communicates so well with patients; he is reassuring and has a great sense of humor. He is tremendously skilled. He makes regular visits in the hospital after surgery so you are kept informed all the way along what is going to happen and how you are feeling and any problems you are experiencing. He has a physician's assistant who is tremendous. The people he has working with him are as good as he is.

This practice is the most professional I have seen in many years, all the staff listen and follow-up, and I couldn't ask for a better group of highly skilled doctors.
