    Working with Michelle and Jay at MJS Excavation was very refreshing. They are a family-run business that takes a lot of pride in their work and they won't stop until they know you're happy. They excavated an area of our backyard for a hot tub, leveled it, prepared it with pretty pea stone, and built a very nice retaining wall around it that was way nicer than what we imagined. They also leveled out the rest of our backyard lawn, which had a lot of uneven areas. We are very happy to have found this company and highly recommend MJS!

    Approximately 900sf of flooring was paid for but never installed...a half- bath/laundry area never finished...areas of painting and baseboard not finished....I had to pay other people to finish what he started...repeated phone calls were not returned..my experience with him has been a nightmare..avoid him at all costs.

    Bernie did a great job. He completed the work in a week. He replaced a crumbling wall with new cinder blocks. For the other walls, he removed any loose, flaking cement and put on a fresh parge coat of cement. He spent a lot of time prepping the walls to remove the old loose cement, so I am confident that the fresh cement coat will last a long time. It looks great.

    We were extremely pleased with the completeness of Jeff's inspection.  Jeff also answered the many questions we has about mold and the remediation process.  Jeff left us with his assurance that we could contact him with any further questions and that our quote of remediation and recommendations would be emailed by the next day.
    As promised the quote came in within 24 hours and we plan to go forward with NU-Life.

    From start to finish great experience.  I shared my plans for design with Gregg.  In turn, he outlined exactly what that would entail regarding demolition and improvement (new moisture barrier walls/sub-floor, etc).  He made suggestions regarding a shower wall niche and curved shower rod that I would not have considered.  His estimate seemed fair and I planned accordingly.  I purchased all the design elements (wall and floor tile, Jacuzzi tub, tub/shower fixtures, light, vanity/sink/faucet, medicine cabinet, new door, shower rod and 2 ceiling fans (one for the other bathroom replacement).  As this is a very small master bathroom (approximately 5'x8') there was not a lot of room to work.  Yet, they worked neatly and respectfully of my living space, prepping and cleaning up each day.  I felt like each day was a new journey, learning about the process and seeing the layers created.  At the beginning I learned that the tub faucet backed up to where the sink cabinet was going to be and chose to replace that while it was easy to access.  This was incorporated into the plan.  At all points I felt that I was not only employing professionals but working with a team to put the pieces of the puzzle of my design together.  They finished more than a day and a half early, despite the extra work I added and it's beautiful!  The only changes made to the original estimate were in respect to the few additions made, which were fair.

    I was a little worried about the access to electric and plumbing in my home as it's within sheetrock ceilings in the finished basement.  They managed to create new sophet (sp?) for the electric that looks like it's supposed to be there and new access door that is preferable to the one that used to be in the other bathroom, which they patched up/closed for me. Better than before!

    They worked along with me to incorporate/coordinate other services (pest control for carpenter ants and a Habitat for Humanity pick up) to compliment the process, not hinder it.  Due to the precision of work, even in demo I was able to donate the tub, sink cabinet, sink, wall mirror and medicine cabinet.  It could not have been easy to remove the tub intact or the mirror - yet it was done without damage.

    They also had no issue with me participating as I wanted.  I painted the walls, trim and new door and am so glad to have been able to participate in that part of the process.  At all times I felt comfortable that I was working with them.  Given past experience with another contractor this is worth everything to me, especially in regards to honoring the original contracted estimate.

    The finished product is so beautiful I almost can't believe it's mine!  Thank you!

    Responded quickly to our initial call. Gave estimates on fixing chimney and basement wall. Gary was very knowledgable and described what needed doing and what was not necessary and did not try to add additional services. Prices were reasonable and estimate was broken down for each service.

    We would definitely have hired him to do the work, except shortly after he looked at the house we sold it to someone who made an offer to buy as is.

    Work took a lot longer than expected due to difficulty in removing the old posts. Better prep. internal communication may have saved them time, but the installer stuck with it without complaint.

    Arrived promptly and finished the job in about 7 hours.  They did not make a mess and cleaned up before they left.  There were two  men performing the work and their supervisor stopped by half way through to walk us through what they were doing and if we had any questions.  They showed us how to monitor the pump and use the dehumidifier.  Our basement is now much warmer and dryer than before.  They did a great job, although I think the cost was slightly too high. If we ever have water damage or need basement work done again, I would call them.

    The installation went well, with everything done as planned. It cost me a bit under $10,000. I was satisfied with the job, until-- a year later (and 10 weeks after a $134 annual service call), the $2000 dehumidifier failed. It failed when I needed it most, during an extended wave of high humidity. I discovered this failure  in the evening, finding gallons of water on my basement floor. I tried to contact the company to arrange an urgent service call for the next day, and found that, amazingly, they do not have evening/weekend coverage for emergencies.



    The next day, I arranged for a technician to come to the house. He found that the tubing (which should have been cleaned out or replaced at the $134 annual service call) was nearly blocked with some kind of sludge. He also found that the unit was not level-- something else that should have been done on installation, and certainly should have been noticed during the $134 annual service call 10 weeks earlier.



    According to the tech, these things contributed to something in the unit shorting out, and the coil became crusted with a thick coating of ice, causing several gallons of water to leak out onto the floor. The tech told me it would be very simple to fix, but the ice had to melt first. He cleaned out the tubing and leveled the unit, and told me that I had to replace the air filter, which I'd been told was done at the $134 annual service. 



    The unit needed a day to thaw before the tech could work on it, but the next day was a holiday. He said he wasn't working on day following the holiday either, and a weekend followed that. He told me to call the office on Monday, (5 very hot and humid days later). I called the next day, to report that the unit had thawed and to request service from a different tech before the weekend I was told that they only had one other tech, and he was booked solid, so I was out of luck until the following week. This meant that the $2,000 dehumidifier was out of service during what was the hottest and most humid week of summer.



    Late on Monday afternoon, the tech came and made the repair in no time. He had just driven a far distance to get to my home as his last call of the day, which I greatly appreciated. He clearly was very knowledgeable and skilled. There was no charge for the repair.



    The next day, I called the office to request a refund of the $134 annual service charge, and I really had to press to just get a partial credit for the dehumidifier potion of the service. They tried to insinuate that the unit got out of level AFTER the annual service because of kids, grandkids or pets bumping into it- but no one goes down to that level, and I don't go down there myself except to check mechanicals.  Furthermore, the 'refund' was issued in the form of a voucher that I will have to hang on to present for a break on next year's service. What are the odds that people lose these slips of paper during the year? Talk about nickel and diming the customer! 



    So, I was satisfied with the work performed by this company overall, but unhappy with what I later found was essentially a poorly-done annual service call.  I was also very unhappy that this company which installs expensive sump pumps and dehumidifiers under warranty does not provide after-hours coverage or weekend/holiday coverage for emergencies. I was told that they only have two repair techs. I suggested to an office staffer that they should consider hiring more techs, and she simply said, "That's not in the plans at his time." She also tried to console me when I expressed worry at having to wait 5 very humid days for my repairs by saying, "You're lucky. We have one lady who's been waiting over two weeks."

    This happened before I was a member of Angie?s List. I hired Bethlehem Home Repair (owned by Dave Palmer) after checking BBB. He had an A+ reputation on BBB, so I felt some comfort that he was a reputable contractor. The scope of my project was some minor interior alterations and windows replacement. The interiors portion of the project was completed without incident. The  BHR placed an order for my windows, with my material deposit. BHR informed me of the expected date of delivery for the windows, and work stopped until the windows arrived.  

    When the day of the anticipated window arrival came, I contacted BHR to see if they had indeed arrived and when BHR could start installation. Dave Palmer had informed me that he was going to have some medical procedures done but that he should be out of commission for no longer than a weekend or so. Unfortunately, this was not the case and he was in fact out of commission for many weeks. BHR did not have any back up mechanism in place to communicate with me during his absence. My numerous phone calls and e-mails went unreturned, and I was left to wonder what had happened, and whether my material deposit was in jeopardy. 

    Finally, Dave Palmer called me again and informed me that he had been out much longer than he anticipated because of some unexpected medical complications, and that he was now ready to resume work again. The window installation was completed without further incident and I paid BHR in full for services rendered.  

    In conclusion, BHR showed poor communications skills during my project. I don?t fault Dave for being out of commission for medical reasons. However, BHR did not have a lieutenant or anyone else who kept me up to date on the status of my project or continue the work in Dave?s absence. They were reliant entirely on the initiative of Dave Palmer to show up and execute the work. When anything kept Dave Palmer from doing his job, his clients suffered as a result.
