  • Mike worked with my budget and saved me thousands here and there so I could keep on track. He even got certified in my county so he could work on my job! He went through the project step by step so that I would know what to expect at every stage of the project. Even when surprises happened, he was there to smooth things over. We passed every inspection without any problems. The apartment is almost done, and it looks amazing! I can't wait to move in!

  • Javier and his men replaced most of the rotted wood trim.  Primed and painted it.  A few months later it was buckling and peeling.  I called Javier several times and he always had an excuse as to why he couldn't come and fix the problem.  After a while he stopped answering my calls altogether.
I took so long to write this review because I was not a member of Angie's List.
Note:  Javier asked us to write a recommendation for Angie's List before we realized he was never coming back.  We wrote a glowing one.  We recommended him to good friends.  He did the same thing to them and left them with a worse problem than they had to begin with.  We recommended him to a neighbor as well.  And after all that, he abandoned us.

  • Flavio, the owner, and his crew did an excellent job.  The carpentry work is of the highest quality, and the work was done in a timely, professional way.  Flavio worked with a local mill to recreate custom molding that was already in the house and he coordinated with lumber and door companies to ensure delivery and quality of the products we received.  He also coordinated with other contractors, like the electricians, to ensure the final product was of the highest quality.  He takes pride in his work, pays exceptional attention to details, and he ensured that he had the same vision of the end product as I did.
Overall, the job took approximately 6 weeks. Flavio and his crew were prompt and professional throughout.  They worked with my schedule, and made the entire process as easy as it good be for such a large job.
I recommend New York Carpentry without hesitation, and plan on using him again in the future for some custom cabinetry work.

  • Rodrigo (the boss) came in mid-December and gave a clear and reasonable estimate. We agreed on getting the job done during the first full week of January. The crew of three showed up on Tuesday and then worked for a total of four days. There was a little variability among the crew but all were very pleasant and meticulous in their cleaning up after themselves each day. They moved all the furniture and tried to minimize the impact of their dusty job on the rest of the house. A carpenter showed up the second day and removed and installed new frames. Although he cursed the previous contractor, he eventually figure out how to rectify the problem and then did a beautiful job.
The crew is very friendly and keeps listening to a range of streamed music from Brazil, Peru, Cuba, and Mexico - very nice.
Our dining room as well as the combined living room / study now look splendid. If I had the money, I would immediately have them do the rest of the house. Rodrigo's estimate was very fair and they did not go over budget.

  • I worked with Helio Camargo from Graccioli Contracting, and what they had to do was to dig a trench the length of the wall that was leaking.  They added a pipe and ran it to a sump pump and ran piping from there to the existing drain for my home.  They did another trench around the front of my home as well.  This fixed all of the water issues in my basement.  While they were here they also built a tremendous amount of coverage storage cabinets with louver doors.  They also built up a privacy wall for a downstairs commode.  They were here 10 minutes before their start time each day and performed non-stop work every day until the work was completed.

My only complaint is that there was a great deal of dust in the basement and my belongings were not covered first, so now I have to have some cleaning done.  However, once I pointed it out, they covered everything for me.

In addition to their work, I was going to order a wheelchair for my dog.  She was very weak and needed help walking.  I showed him a picture of what I was going to order and he volunteered to go to Home Depot and purchase parts to make one.  In three hours, he had built the wheelchair for my dog and worked with her to help her walk.  It was very sweet, so I bought him some zucchini bread.

  • I called Handyman Connection and Steve walked me through their process. After I agreed to his terms, he sent a handyman named Stanley to me, and though Stanley was very polite, professional and punctual, his work was shockingly horrific and I would urge you never to have him do any work for you other than demolition type work or very very very rough carpentry. As I say, he did a terrible job and I was extremely distressed. When I called Steve to complain and to ask that he send another handyman to repair the damage, initially I felt he was very aggressively rude. I told him I didn't want Stanley back to my house and though he agreed to have another carpenter do the work, he said he needed Stanley to show him what he'd done and why. I thought that was very unreasonable, but with the fantastic help of Angie's dispute resolution department, I decided to let Steve come and take a look at things with Stanley. Steve acknowledged the unbelievably shoddy nature of Stanley's work, apologized, and offered to have another person repair everything and finish the work Stanley had been hired to do for only the cost of the materials involved with the part Stanley hadn't yet touched. In other words, he charged me nothing for any labor, and only charged for materials that weren't part of the repair. The new handyman, Adam, really did an incredibly great job, and if it weren't for the very bad initial experience due to Stanley's awful work I would give Handyman Connection all A's. Steve turned out to be completely professional and accomodating, and Adam is a very talented carpenter. So, call Handyman Connection but be sure to ask for Adam! And Angie's List's dispute resolution process was easy, nonstressful, and it worked! Hats off to Angie's List!
