    Cresswell, Dr. Tracey
I am a birdwatcher. Several years ago, I noticed that I was losing the ability to hear birds whose songs are high-pitched (high frequency) unless they were close to me. The problem continued to worsen gradually and I had my hearing tested 2 years ago, confirming that up to 2kHz I was OK but my hearing dropped off at higher frequencies. This spring I did some research on the internet and learned that the newer digital hearing aids are supposed to have the capability to make high pitched sounds louder without increasing the volume on the lower pitched sounds. There are some great websites with very convincing demos. I did some pricing research and found out that I could order hearing aids online at a large discount compared to going to an audiologist of my choice and buying from him or her. A friend had recommended Dr. Cresswell, so I contacted her by email and asked her about the internet pricing. She responded in a way that made me decide to go to her office. I ended up paying a lot of money for the hearing aids but would never do it any other way. Dr. Cresswell started by asking me what the impact of my hearing deficit was on my life. She told me she had fitted some other birders with hearing aids and they were happy (big plus if true, I thought!). She examined my ears for physical issues and then gave me the test in the sound booth. After that we talked over the options and she told me which hearing aid would do the best possible job, while at the same time telling me there were less expensive options. When I told her I was scheduled to participate in a bird census that weekend, she offered to lend me a pair of those top of the line hearing aids for a week. I accepted, she adjusted them for my ears, and I walked out that very first day hearing birds from the parking lot that had seemed silent 90 minutes earlier. The weekend bird census was a joyful experience, such as I had not had in years. I was a born-again birder! Even though I didn't have to return the loaners until Thursday, I called Dr. Cresswell first thing Monday morning and ordered a pair! Three days later, I was back in the office and she was adjusting the new hearing aids for me. I have been back to Dr. Cresswell once for a further adjustment to help me hear the high pitched bird songs better (these adjustments are free during the first year). She had suggested I bring in a CD with the bird songs that were giving me trouble, which she then used to adjust the hearing aids, and she programmed the hearing aids with a special "birding" program that I can switch to when the need arises. Dr. Cresswell encourages her patients to tell her very specifically what sounds give them trouble, so that she can recreate those sounds in her office to adjust the patient's hearing aid as precisely as possible to meet his or her personal needs. Some of her patients bring their musical instruments to her office for this purpose! The hearing aids - Oticon AgilPro - were very expensive ($7224 including a bluetooth streamer for use with a cell phone or MP3 player), but financing was available and the change in my quality of life justifies the investment. I no longer have to turn up the TV louder than anyone else wants it to be, I can understand people when they speak, and there are none of the horrid effects my mother used to complain about with her hearing aids 10 years ago. In restaurants and other noisy settings I understand people around me talking, but there are no unpleasant loud, jarring noises. When driving, the sound of the car is quiet but I can understand people talking in the car and I can hear important sounds outside. What I learned from this experience is that the skill, sensitivity, and empathy of the audiologist are paramount to making the hearing aid investment truly worthwhile. I have spoken to several other birders who wear hearing aids who have not had the good fortune of finding an audiologist like Dr. Cresswell in their area. As a result, they have gotten good digital hearing aids without getting the benefit of the highly skilled, caring, and personalized kind of service that I have received. I wish I had known about Dr. Cresswell when my mother was alive, so that she could have enjoyed a better quality of life through better hearing.

Ms.I originally bought a pair of Oticon AgilPro hearing aids from the Audiology department of this practice 2+ years ago. At that time, I worked at a college and asked around about who to go to...a number of people recommended this practice. I got a quote from them, which seemed a bit steep (compared to some Internet prices), but the recommendations were so strong, I decided to go to them anyway. I have never been happier, nor received better value from anything I've ever gotten...it was like buying an Acura with free service for the first 10 years. What I didn't understand when I got them was: = how carefully they would be adjusted to me, including a tailored extra profile to deal with a problem interacting with my musical instrument playing = that all the subsequent visits would be free = that the things that wear or must be replaced, other than the batteries (ear spacer, no-war ring) would be provided free = that my hearing would be rechecked and the aids recalibrated yearly free = that the audiologist, Linda Harris, would be *so* friendly, so knowledgeable (30 years), so professional, so focused on making the aids working perfectly and me happy, so patient and thorough in answering all my questions and requests. = that they would make sure to remind me so that the damage or loss replacement insurance was renewed every year, no small matter for these little devices that cost $3-5K. I could go on, but it boils down to this: I have never been given service this good before. Hearings aids are *not* a commodity you buy like a light bulb; they must be fitted and tailored to you....and re-adjusted periodically. You are buying service as much as product....without good, knowledgeable service, hearing aids are next to useless. Ms. Harrris provides that service in depth and quality

I like the small office setting, where she and the staff are friendly and take the time to explain options and outlooks.
