    VULCAN WATERPROOFING
Salesman and estimator were nice. When they came to install the sump pump, they inexplicably connected it to a pipe leading to the emergency drain pan for our clothes washer on the second floor. I'm no plumber but my understanding is that sump pumps take water from your basement and deposit it outside your house, not so it floods groundwater and sewage into my kids' bedrooms on the second floor. Groundwater then went through the second floor floors into our kitchen where it soaked through cabinets, our range, shorted out light fixtures, then through that floor into our basement where it damaged a family heirloom wood cabinet. On top of that, it turns out the sump pump they put in connects to the sewer system and that that is against code - of course that was not disclosed to us by the company. The workers on site were extremely gracious and apologetic. The management, after saying they "wouldn't hide" from their mistake, nevertheless asked "when are you going to pay us for the pump", and now 3 months later I have >100K damage in my house and their insurance company is giving us the runaround. I asked Terri Abush, one of their senior management, for assistance with prodding their insurance company to make this right, and what did she do? she did exactly what she said she wouldn't do, which is hide behind their insurance company. The workers were nice and were apologetic. Other than that, I would never hire this company again. They may have been in business for 80+ years, but hopefully they won't be in business for much longer.

    Killpatrick Construction
There were problems once they dug the foundation out. Originally, they were just supposed to tar and waterproof the foundation. It turned out that it had never been waterproofed before, and it was just dirt against cinderblock. It was basically improper construction to begin with and the surface was deteriorating. The cinderblocks on one side of the house were actually crumbling. They were soaked with water and were crumbling. I paid a lot of money but I caught that particular problem in time. The damage was really on one side but the slow deterioration was pretty much all around. So, instead of just tarring it, we also had wire mesh done with stucco put over that, and then the tar and vapor barrier. They originally said it was going to be one drywell, but it would up being three huge drywells. I was not happy with the way they did it but I should have known that upfront. So, there is good and there is bad. I was happy with the job they did on the foundation. They did a very nice job on re-laying the pavers on the back patio that was draining the wrong way. We worked with them on designing the front walk. It wasn’t coming out the way I really liked it, so they just redid it. They were really good in that respect and the whole front looks really nice now. I was very happy with the work they did on the driveway and garage floor. I was not happy with the roof work and the gutters, and the prices they wound up charging us for that. That was very high but it was necessary and had to be done. There were holes in the roof and it needed to be done, and done immediately. We didn’t know anything was wrong until we looked under the roofing shingles, which is what they did. The plywood was rotting right through and it was incredible that we didn’t have leaks. They did what they had to do and prevented further damage but they are not roofers. I have since gone and replaced the roof and the gutters. I really don’t want to knock them on that because that is really not their specialty. Their specialty is foundation work, concrete, pavers and things like that.
