Things started off okay.  But unfortunately, the owner of the company (Martin Grozier, who obviously had no carpentry experience whatsoever), apparently had an issue with being able to retain a carpenter for his business (this is key since his company does carpentry work and he has no experience in this area).  According to people who worked with and for him, he didn't really treat his employees very well and was reluctant to pay these professionals what they were worth.
So the first carpenter we had, apparently expecting less than equitable treatment by Martin, tended to put in partial work days (assuming he showed up at all).  A job that was supposed to be completed in 4-5 weeks was now stretching in to 7-8 weeks.  Then something happened between Martin and his carpenter and the carpenter walked off the job.
It became a mad scramble for Martin to find a replacement carpenter to complete the job.  He eventually found one, but it was a guy that worked full time for a reputable company.  I was assured that this gentleman would be putting in many evening and weekend hours to wrap up the job as quickly as possible.  What actually happened was that this guy would work a couple hours on one weeknight, then show up for a few hours on Saturdays.  So my 4-5 week job eventually became a 6 month job (might have been even longer).
The job was never really complete.  The plaster guy did a crappy job, with all sorts of cracks and rough spots throughout the basement.  When asked if he could come by and fix the bad spots (which was most of the basement), I was informed that I needed to apply primer to all the plastered walls before he could actually finish his job.  This was the biggest issue I had with this company - in order for them to "finish" the job and deliver the finished basement as agreed to in the contract, I  had to go out of my way to apply primer to the basement walls.  I was never informed that this would be required and it was nowhere in the contract.
So when I told Martin that I didn't consider the job complete (I maintained that the plaster guy, as part of his job, should have done the priming of the walls so that he could finish his plaster job) and planned to withhold my final payment until the job was done, instead of trying to work with me to come to an agreeable solution, he immediately threatened legal action and that he would place a mechanic's lien on my house unless I made the final payment.
Oh yeah, I almost forgot - they attempted to apply leveler to the basement floor to smooth out some unlevel spots.  They did a horrible job - basically because Martin didn't want to spend any more money on leveler.  He tried to do the best job with the little bit he had - resulting in hills and valleys in the floor that you can really notice.
I think Martin folded the company after this job because he realized that he didn't have what it takes to run a successful company that delivers a quality product.
