    Reno Orthopaedic Clinic
I had two visits. The first was fine. MRI folks were terrific. But on the second visit, I had to push to get more than a suggestion of a prescription from an assistant. That might have helped symptoms but did nothing to identify or address the underlying problem. Finally after insistence, got a referral to a pain clinic, BUT my records were not sent in a timely manner. Was suppose to take two days. After over a week the pain clinic had to beat the bushes to get them. This delay cost me a long-planned trip, which I had to cancel. ROC has outsourced all records to some out-of-state company; so if you need records sent to another clinic/doctor, it takes FOREVER!! This causes delays in any further treatments. Solid "F" in this regard. It took over THREE WEEKS for my doctor to get test results. Totally unacceptable.

Dr. Kalisvaart was all business prior to the surgery and that is an okay thing. He took the time to explain what I needed, which was a total knee replacement. Even though my appointment was the 21st of December, I asked Dr. K and his assistant, Merisa, if there was any way she could get me scheduled for surgery prior to the end of the year (in 10 days!) because my high insurance deductible was already met for the calendar year.
Merisa is great and will attend to your needs promptly, efficiently, and thoroughly. She somehow maneuvered one of the other orthopedic surgeons, Dr. Renny Uppal (also a good surgeon and a compassionate man), to release one of his surgical slots at Renown South early in the morning of the 31st of December, to me. This allowed Dr. Kalisvaart the surgical time to be able to do my surgery. Hallelujah! I was so ready for the surgery.
The surgery went splendidly. Dr. Kalisvaart impressed me greatly because on the day of the surgery, he came up to my room in between his 2nd and 3rd scheduled surgeries to see how I was doing and to tell me how the surgery went. He made sure my pain was under control from a medication standpoint. He wrote a great set of orders for the Renown floor nurses to follow because I had been on a high amount of pain medicine for the last two decades (underlying auto inflammatory joint disease) and by the time of the surgery, I had a high tolerance for pain which would then require that I have an inordinately high amount of narcotics on board so that I could be comfortable while in the hospital. He did not look at me like I was a junkie because he had taken the time to review my rheumatologist's and internist's records and see why it was that I was on the medicines I was and what the reasoning for the dosages was.
Back to Dr. Kalisvaart. I had surgery on Wednesday and checked out on Friday. He came to the hospital every day to see me. That was great and the thing that I appreciated the most other than his great surgical skills. The following Monday he called me at home to see how I was doing. Wow.
I have done so well since the surgery that I had to give credit to someone other than me. So at my first follow-up consultation, I asked him what he did that made my surgery so successful. He said he didn't know (very humble), but said he always takes the time to methodically check out every element of the joint structure, correct what he finds, and then get out of the surgical site and close so that he patient's surgical site is not open to the elements for one minute longer than necessary thereby reducing the risk of infection. Job well done, Dr. Kalisvaart!
I also had no fear of him being a "new" surgeon even though he had just started with the ROC four months prior to my surgery. By the time these guys get into private practice and have finished their orthopedic training and fellowship, they have done a thousand knees. Also, they know the newest techniques from every medical perspective and that is a very good thing.
I can't tell you how glad I am that Dr. K was my orthopedic surgeon for a surgery that can be debilitating and potentially permanently disabling, at worst. Hopefully after reading what I have written, you will not have one moment of concern about committing to Dr. K as the lead member of your surgical team.

    Dr Bruce Witmer
I have been using him for about 5 years now. He cares about his patients. They call me before my appointment, so I don't miss it, they are flexible, and they are just awesome. I wouldn't go any where else. I can get in quickly. They are prompt, they answer the phone, and they schedule me there. When I call to refill my subscriptions, they call me back the same day. The office is nice, clean and neat.

They are terrible. My wife has been going there for two months. She had a cast for four weeks, and when they removed it, she still couldn't' move her fingers. She is pretty disappointed in them. You don't see a doctor, you see a doctor's assistant, Dr. Bruce, and do physical therapy. The therapy group is pretty good. The assistant doesn't answer questions. She will continue to see them because they are the only ones in the area but would not go again by choice.

    Shonnard, Dr. Paul Y.
doctor said that the knee pain was a result of bone on bone hip nerve entrapment. This was based on X-rays, and no MRI was done to verify the nerve entrapment. Later, upon looking at the x-rays because of serious complications, it was found that there were no abnormalities of the hips, therefore the surgery was completely unnecessary.

I was totally dismissed by Dr. Shonnard's office six weeks after surgery with the idea that if a problem should arise, I would immediately be in contact with him. Am relieved of former pain and am healing well.

Didn't sit down and talk to Doctor Gray, he came in the waiting room and said Hi, I'm Dr. Gray, come with me and I'll show you what's going on with you disc. He had my xray film up and showed me my spine. He got a phone call and I stood there for 2 minutes waiting for him to return. He finally returned and said I had degenerative disc disease and there is nothing he can do for me, surgery won't repair it. Everyone gets it starting at 50yrs old. I said thank you, that was it.

    Burgess, Dr. John F
This last appointment went better than expected. I did not need another injection and I was not billed for the visit. The receptionist/secretary was nice and friendly, and so was the doctor. He was very thorough in his examination. Very complete in discussing the situation, and really inspired confidence. The bedside manner was truly impeccable.

I saw Dr. Lenny Uppal at the Reno Orthopedic clinic I was having leg pain and swelling around my knee. My knee was drained to remove fluid and he said that might help with the pain. However if my condition didn't improve an mri would have to be done later as I might have a torn meniscus. Then arthroscopic surgery would be done. He explained the procedure to drain fluid from my knee and seemed genuinely concerned about my pain. I will continue to see him if my pain returns.

P.T. Craig Barton and Assistant Hannah provided excellent guidance and motivation through 40 scheduled visits. They always showed concern and compassion and were able to help me meet and exceed all of my rehab goals. The entire staff and group of therapists made for an great experience. I would highly recommend them.
