  • Our experience with Susie has been awesome. She is incredibly calm and assertive with our dog and expects us to do the same. She has really helped us turn around our dog who has been "protecting" me from my partner. He has both fear based aggression and protects. My partners has been bitten multiple times and we have seen huge improvements from our 9 pound fur baby.

  • I adopted a 2 year old dog from the Humane Society in late February of this year (2011). Almost immediately it became evident that she required a specialized knee surgery, which she underwent in early March. Because of the need to keep her contained for healing, it was necessary to crate her for 2 - 3 months, until the surgeon deemed her fully healed. Problems set in immediately as Bella could not bear to be crated and broke out of every wire crate we put her in. She had a severe case of separation-anxiety on top of this, exhibiting great distress any time she was left alone in the house. The healing of her knee was placed in jeopardy, and I was forced to cancel many work days because of this. We finally put her on medication, which initially calmed some of this behavior down.

Along with the above problems, Bella was extremely phobic of strangers, other dogs and new situations. She startled easily, and would freeze in terror or attempt to pull out of her harness to get away from whatever situation she was in that triggered this fear (including hearing certain vehicles on the road or seeing someone walking down the street). Walks, even the short therapeutic ones we were doing at the time, were a nightmare.

When it became evident that the medication was no longer working I consulted a Behavioral Veterinarian, who after a 2 hour consult strongly suggested that we put Bella down. It was at this point, and quite out of desperation, that I first consulted with Ms. O'Donoghue and Animals Smile. From the first session it became very evident that Ms. O'Donoghue had a great understanding of dog behavior and how to alleviate many of the problem behaviors Bella was exhibiting. She took her time, and never once pushed Bella into doing anything more than she was able or ready to do ... by the end of the first hour Bella had transformed from a dog terrified of having someone new in the room with her and hiding in the corner, to a more at-ease-in-her-own-skin dog, allowing Ms. O'Donoghue to begin to use the touches on her, and eating treats offered from her hand.

I was shown the touches as well so that I could continue to use these on Bella in-between sessions. I feel Ms. O'Donoghue was able to accurately sum up the main problem underlining Bella's fears and anxieties, and in doing so was able to develop a program of touches and other exercises to begin to address these.

On subsequent sessions we worked with a number of ground exercises and activities, each targeting Bella's specific needs and building on her progress from week to week. Any of my actions that were inadvertently contributing to some of her problems were also gently addressed. I find Ms. O'Donoghue to be exceedingly thorough in her work, compassionate in her understanding, and superb in her ability to communicate what is needed both to my dog and to myself.

The progress I have witnessed through her work with Bella is truly amazing. I have seen my dog transform from a phobic terrified creature to one who is increasingly more sure of herself and confident, easily approaching strangers and other dogs. Our walks are much more joyful for the two of us. Bella can now be left at home when I leave without any problem whatsoever.

I can truly say that through my contact with Animals Smile the difference in my dog's behavior is like night and day.

  • I had a very fearful dog whose fear took the form of aggression, so I needed a behavioral trainer.  I found Jessice O'Donoghue, and she has worked wonders.  My dog is no longer afraid of people we pass on the street.  She now accepts bicycles and small children.  She is still wary of strangers who come to the house, but that is as it should be.  Once she sees that they are not a threat to anyone she accepts them.  Thanks to Jessica I have a well behaved dog who is part of the family.

  • Jolynn obviously loves animals and the animals understand that. I couldn't have been happier with the way she treated my dog, Lucky.

  • They're excellent!  They have good dog training background, and they have an excellent facility which is brand new.  They're very easy to work with, and they're very nice.
