the scalp treatments solved my problem..minor hair loss from a direct blunt force to scalp..and sun damage was treated with freezing treatment...all areas responded to treatment and my issues are completely healed!

    Rio Grande Dermatology
A great office, very clean and efficient. Very helpful staff, and not a long new patient form to fill out.
I had a completely fabulous experience with Dr. David Lortscher and his attending nurse. They were both very professional and knowledgeable, yet kind. He listened to and respected my concerns and input, and gave me the impression he would take as much time with me as I needed. He did a full body exam (in the past, unbelievably to me, even with a biopsied basil cell, my prior dermatologist didn't even suggest looking around much).
Dr. Lortscher didn't pressure or infuence me into a longer, multiple biopsy, multiple visit, more expensive course of action and he very well could have. He respected my lack of insurance (I'm between health insurances, working as an outside contracting consultant, and have to pay direct). To help me out in this way, he suggested we could go ahead with removal right during that first visit if I wanted (and I did). He did a quick and completely painless removal and I was out of the office very soon.
The Rio Grande front desk worked with me and my finances, even offering me a discount I didn't ask for outright. All in all, I'm very, very happy to have found them and Dr. Lortscher and will definitely be back for regular checkups.

    Ortiz, Dr. Karel J.
I pointed out a spot I was concerned about, she looked at it and decided to do a biopsy. Within a few days I had a negative lab report. She notices when I've had too much sun exposure when my freckles give it away. She's got a great sense of humor and bedside manner. When needed, she's referred me for additional surgical treatments, but is always aware of the costs. I first saw her as an uninsured patient and she did everything she could to keep the costs down, including giving me samples of needed medications when I could not afford the prescriptions. Now that I have health insurance, she is still just as conscientious of costs and does not sacrifice her quality of patient care. She takes her time, answers questions, asks questions and treats you as a friend.

So far, I've been skin cancer free for two years now.

    Ortiz, Dr. Karel J.
I arrived at the dermatology office a few minutes early. The office (Tramway and Academy) was conveniently located with parking at the door and a pleasant lobby.
The staff was friendly and efficient in getting my paper work done (I was a 1st timer). I was in to see the doctor within minutes of my arrival.
After seeing Dr. Ortiz (as described previously), I was on my way out the door. There was no co-payment or insurance hassle. The staff handled everything.
This was by far the most stress free medical appointment I can remember.

    Ortiz, Dr. Karel J.
I wasn't too happy with Dr. Ortiz. I had a negative experience with her. She tried to make up for some of it, but not totally. The price was also much more expensive than I expected. She took the wrong thing out above my eye. She is rated as one of the better ones, but I think they wrote it themselves. It was on one of the magazines with the best doctors, but I think it's basically advertising. I wouldn't recommend her because it was outrageous. I like that her personal skills and her office seems very efficient. The dislikes are that she didn't really listen to me. I had some stuff on my eye. So, the first time, she didn't remove everything that I asked her to remove. Then she let me come back the second time to do it for free, but she took the wrong thing out. She took scar tissue on my eyelid instead of what I had asked her to take. So, the third time, she took the right thing out, but I got charged again about a few hundred bucks for a 5-minute procedure. Her availability was pretty good. I haven't had much interaction with the staff. They are businesslike and not overly friendly. She eventually removed what I asked her to remove. I will try not to use her services again.

    Carey, Dr. David
My experience was excellent. The staff was very nice and efficient. I arrived 15 minutes early and was actually being seen by Dr Carey before my scheduled appointment time. I found Dr Carey to be very friendly and personable. He quickly found and took care of several areas of sun damaged skin. I highly recommend Dr Carey and his staff based on my first experience with them.

    Ramero, Dr. Monica
We went to her because she was on both Angie's List and our insurance.  My wife and I went at different times.  She is an excellent doctor.  She communicates well.  She stays very much on time.  However, you have to wait quite a while to get the first appointment.

    Carey, Dr. David
I went with the idea of just getting botox. I asked him what he would recommend for me. He thought botox for line between my brows; restylene nasal folds and juvederm for my lips. I look at least 10 years younger! It was not painful and results were instant for the restylene and juvederm. I am so very happy with the result. I have also had hair laser removal and a couple of small skin growths from my arms removed at Rio Grande Dermatology but by a different Doctor. I was so afraid to get the injectables but nothing to fear and a super result. Thank you Dr. Carey!

    Carey, Dr. David
I needed a new dermatologist because our insurance changed. The office is next to my primary care physician and he recommended Dr. Carey highly. Dropped by to see if they accepted my coverage. The billing clerk said they did. But later it turned out they didn't--and I ended up having to pay $165 extra for the visit. BUMMER! Especially since he was prompt, friendly, knowledgable, fun and quick as a bunny!!! I REALLY wish he was a provider for my insurance!

    Ortiz, Dr. Karel J.
Dr, Karel Ortiz is an excellent communicator. She has an outstanding and friendly bedside manner. She knows her stuff. She is very attentive to my concerns and seeks to implement the solutions to them with due dispatch. Rio Grande Dermatology is the most well run medical office I have ever experienced. The front and back office staff along with the Medical Assistant that assisted the Doctor are professional, courteous, friendly and exhibited the best customer service I have ever received from a medical practice. I recommend Dr Ortiz and the Rio Grande Dermatology group with out hesitation.
