    KIM JEW PHOTOGRAPHY STUDIO
Uncaring Staff and Deceptive Practices. I am writing this review to let everyone know about the deceptive practices employed by Kim Jew Photography and their staff. I have held off writing and submitting this to avoid a heat of the moment response. However, after reflecting and evaluating what happened to me, I didnt feel I could stand by and not say anything. My experience with Kim Jew started, of course, with family. My parents were due to celebrate their 50th Wedding Anniversary on September 24, 2016. I had coordinated with my siblings and we were able to get everyone here for the event, which was not an easy task as my brother and two sisters live in Helena, MT; Seattle, WA and Portland, OR respectively. It seemed like a lucky coincidence when I saw a Groupon for Kim Jew offering an in-studio session and $200 credit towards pictures. I bought the Groupon and scheduled an appointment. At first, everything went well. The session was run by one of their photographers, Matt Foster, who did a great job with the session and ended up taking some really amazing photos. I have nothing negative to say about Mr. Foster, he is a great photographer. Unfortunately, that was the highlight of the session. Next started th high pressure sales pitch. First, they offered 50% off of pictures purchased that day, but we had limited time with everyone in from out of town and a lot of family events planned, so I deferred. I finally was able to schedule a visit to pick photos in early November. The salesperson assigned, Jazz, quickly brought up the pictures and started running through them quickly, asking me to compare and pick. I had not had the opportunity to preview any proofs as of this point. Going through the photos was difficult, as I liked several, and knowing I would have to be careful in my selection due to budget. I was able to select several, but the sticker shock was impressive. Then the first switcheroo happened. Jazz said the discount was only 40%, not the 50% offered by the photographer. Then the second shoe dropped. When I mentioned my $200 off from the Groupon, she said that did not count against the discounted price and would apply against the most expensive item, a $650 framed family photo that was to be a Christmas gift for my parents. You can do the math, but 50% off would be $325 and even 40% would be $390. So in the end, I ended up spending $425 instead, because I had a Groupon deal. Some deal. I am embarrassed I allowed myself to be bullied by the staff like that and ended up paying MORE than if I didnt have the Groupon. I left feeling abused, but thought that the Christmas gift would make it worth it. Fast forward to December. I received a call from the photographer that my prints were ready, but the framed picture was not. I was a little worried hearing that! And seriously, the prints were made from digital images they had had since September. Does it REALLY take 13 weeks to print a digital image?! The following week, the week of Christmas, I called to get the framed picture. Jazz got on the line and said it wasnt ready. The framed picture I had ordered two months prior. For Christmas. I asked Jazz if that was really the case and when I could pick it up. She matter-of-factly told me that it wasnt ready, the framer was behind schedule and, Oh, they dont ship anything from now until January 6th, so you can get it then. I got a bit upset and explained that this was a Christmas gift for my 80 year old parents and yada yada, (you get the picture). She said she would call me back. No one called me back, so that evening around 5, I called and she said she forgot to call me back, but actually it was ready and I could pick it up tomorrow (December 23rd). I did go and get the framed picture, but it made me wonder. Was it always ready and Jazz just couldnt be bothered to check because she didnt give a crap because they already had my money, or did they do a rush job and finish it in 24 hours because I complained? I dont know the answer to the last, but I can say I will never use Kim Jew photography again. After reading this, you are free to decide whether or not you will. I would obviously warn you not to. If you do choose to go, I would advise you to get the price list FIRST, and leave your heart and feelings for the subject of your photos at home, because they will use those feelings and emotions against you to suck every last dollar out of your pocket. I look at the pictures and they are beautiful, but I cant see them without recalling the horrible experience I went through to get them, which takes a lot of the beauty away.

    Pluses:
    Photographer was on time
    Photographer was pleasant
    Minuses:
Conditions for the event were challenging, but I expected a professional photographer to be able to adapt.
I expected a professional photographer to:
    - use a lens shade to prevent sun flare
    - use a fill flash to eliminate shadows
    - to visit the site prior to the event to suggest suitable back drop
    - not have folks looking into the sun so that their photochromic glasses were dark
    - speak loudly enough for the (obviously) older subjects could hear

    J C PENNEY PORTRAIT STUDIO
I made an appointment for a business head shot on line, as is required. First clue this was a doomed effort: appointments are scheduled every 10 minutes. There were many vacancies on the schedule for that morning, so I hoped it would not be too crowded. I got a call later in the morning from a JC Penney employee to remind me I had an appointment the next day. When I arrived, I waited to check in. There were two studio employees - one was trying to finalize a deal with a family in their football jerseys, who just completed a photo shoot. The other was taking photos in a studio behind the counter. After 15 minutes, the employee waiting on the family making their selections asked me what I needed - I informed her I had an appointment. She did not ask my name, nor did she give me an idea of how long I might wait, but she told me to sit down in the waiting area. The "waiting area" is a corner with tiny cubes for children to sit on and a tiny screen playing the movie "Wally" nonstop. The chair and bench were already occupied. As I found out later, the people occupying it were scheduled for a sitting at noon, My appointment at 12:20 came and went without notice while the football jerseys still tried to arrive at a final deal and the family that had just posed tried to do the same with the second employee. At 12:40, I could see that I would not get in anytime before 1 pm, and it would probably be later than that. No one had taken any notice of the group huddled in the waiting area. I left - neither employee noticed. I did not receive a call later asking if I wanted to reschedule or apologizing for the failure to provide a scheduled service.
A final note on price: while waiting, I heard one of the employees ask if the family had a "Groupon" deal. I checked - the difference in price was startling. The advertised price for a sitting and a CD with a few poses was approximately $90, as I understood it from a hurried explanation on the phone the day before. Since I had plenty of time, I downloaded the app for Groupon on my phone, signed in an checked the deal - it looked like I could get the same deal for $20 if I hit "Buy Now." This is not confirmed - I did not get a chance to speak to an employee to make sure I understood all the details, but if you brave the JC Penney Portrait Studio, you should definitely check Groupon first.
It is possible someone called in sick that morning and the two employees were dealing with the situation as best they could. No one bothered to explain that, I'm just guessing. I also understand the need to finalize a deal with customers who just posed for their photos, before their enthusiasm cools. But the business model fails when families try to decide how many and which poses they are going to pay for. Everyone stands and hovers around a screen showing their choices as they try to understand a complicated menu of options and prices. The better - and perhaps more profitable option - would be to have a salesperson explain all that while the photographers keep the appointments running on time. (That would require hiring another employee, or splitting the commissions.) Or don't try to schedule appointments every ten minutes. If appointments had arrived every ten minutes that morning, there would have been a riot. As it was, there were only two appointments in a 40 minutes, and it was seriously backed up.
Overall, a miserable experience and a disappointment. Avoid at all costs! Find a professional photo studio that will treat customers decently, even if it costs more.

    Blooming Images
It was amazing!! Breanna is personable and sweet and my daughter loves her. She was always prompt and professional for our appointments and very fast at delivering finished (and beautiful) products. We're expecting another in January and have already hired her for the next baby!! If you had asked me before if I would spend $1800 on photos I would have laughed but it was the best investment I have made. And I'm gladly making it again. Irreplaceable memories captured. :)

I've done Portrait Innovations, and I've tried another local photographer, but Breanna at Blooming Images has me coming back for more and more!!! She is my unofficial family photographer!! She has such an eye for capturing the beauty of the moment.. It's nerve wracking as a mother when getting family photos, but I'm always relaxed with Breanna knowing she ALWAYS captures beautiful photos! Define fly recommend Breanna always to my friends and families whether she knows about it or not; it's not about credit or thanks, it's helping my friends get amazing photos of their loved ones!

    KYLE ZIMMERMAN PHOTOGRAPHY
My husband and I went to Kyle's office for our appointment. She and her two employees met with us. They were all very warm and friendly, while being professional and informative. She showed us work that was done for other people. There was no pressure at all. We hired Kyle on the spot. She called before the wedding to verify everything. She arrived promptly and we spoke briefly about different things we would like and how to proceed. Then she just went about doing her job. We were very happy with the results and would work with Kyle again, anytime.

    Amy Parrish
Amy was wonderful to work with.  She is not only an exceptionally great photographer, she's also a "photo story-teller" incorporating her style and our desires to document a day in my daughters life her senior year of high school. She was terrific ... and fun to work with. Consequently, I have an photographs and a wonderful album that,  years later, we can look back on reminiscing on the moments of the day that captured the joy, laughter and love. She captured the essence of my daughter in her photos.  I will definitely use her again.  I highly recommend Amy to everyone wanting to capture a wonderful moment in time.

    LIFETOUCH NATIONAL SCHL STUDIO
Horrible experience. We had to use them because that's who the school contracted with.  Even though we had an appointment, it took about three hours to complete the photo session.  They kept sending us back out to the lobby to wait. They had four differenct photographers and although the phototgraphers were nice, they were't very talented. They told us it would take about 2  weeks to get the proofs. It ended up taking about 2 months! They charged me $40 for a session fee and then the photo packges were crazy expensive. It cost $90 to get 2 5x7s.  Take you business elsewhere!

    Blue Sky Images
GROUPONS WERE PURCHASED FOR MY FAMILY AND AS A GIFT FOR MY PARENTS.  THE PURCHASE WAS TO INCLUDE A 1 HOUR SESSION FOR EACH AND A VERY SMALL PACKAGE OF PICTURES.  TRYING TO MAKE AN APPOINTMENT WAS NEARLY IMPOSSIBLE.  MY PARENTS HAD TO PAY AND EXTRA $100.00 BECAUSE THEY COULD NOT GET AN APPOINTMENT BEFORE THE GROUPON EXPIRED. THE PHOTOGRAPHER DIDNT EVEN BOTHER TO INTRODUCE HERSELF. THERE WAS NO CUSTOMER SERVICE!   OUR 1 HOUR SESSION WAS 30 MINUTES AND MY PARENTS WAS 20 MINUTES.  THAT IS WITH A WARDROBE CHANGE.  THE PICTURES WERE ABSOLUTELY HORRIBLE!!!!!  NOTHING ABOUT THEM WAS GOOD.  I HAD EVERY INTENTION OF PURCHASING MORE PICTURES BUT THEY WERE SO BAD I DON'T EVEN WANT THEM HANGING ON MY WALLS.  I WOULDN'T HIRE THEM AGAIN TO PHOTOGRAPH OUR PETS!!!!  SO UNSATISFIED!!!!

    Kurt's Camera Corral
Kurts charged me a 10% restocking fee for an item they said would fit my application that did not.  They claimed it was because I used a credit card and they still had to pay fees.  As far as I am concerned that is a cost of doing business.  Especially if you are going to recommend a product that does not work.  I will not return and will not advise anyone to give them business.  It is too bad given there are so few local camera shops.
