I really highly recommend this psychiatrist. Dr. Cooperstein goes above and beyond in so many ways. I have AD/HD and have been through trauma that caused me some difficulty being willing to try pharmaceuticals again. The doc was very understanding and patient with me on this issue-- she never rushed me into a trial of medication, nor did she ever make light of my initial discomfort with pharmaceuticals. Once med trial was underway, I always knew I could contact her if needed. She is very strong at making herself available to patients. She has some interest in and knowledge of natural treatment options and will find out more or give a referral if necessary. She is a warm and caring person, which is in my view an essential component of the practice of psychiatry. If psychotherapy is needed, she will give you a referral. Office ambiance presents as a professional medical office with the typical waiting area and receptionist, but once you get into Dr. Cooperstein's office, the office itself and the doctor's self-presentation are warmer and less clinical: no lab coats, examination tables, stethoscopes, blood pressure cuffs, etc. (When these items are needed, the doc or the other medical staff can use them on the patient in a separate patient room.) The overall result of this practice, in my opinion, is the perfect blend of being able to gather objective medical data (ie: blood pressure), while at the same time honoring the patient's personhood by not making the patient feel like a thing being examined and worked on. A nice touch. Downsides: It is tough to get an initial appointment with her, and you may have to file your own insurance claim with the doc as an out-of-network provider. (You will have to pay the doc up front.) Overall, I highly recommend. (Note: I am giving her an A for availability because she is very available for appointments once you are her patient. She is tough to get an initial appt with, however.)

Having relocated a few times in my life and needing to find a psychiatrist/meds manager and psychologist/counselor, I've encountered a few doctors who think they know better than the last. On a few occasions I've been told that I'm inappropriately medicated and that my diagnosis is incorrect. I've agreed to try their suggestions, but found that I returned to what actually worked. After a 10-minute consultation, rediagnosis is exactly what Ms. Talati did. She knew that I just moved to NJ and that at this time just needed someone to write the prescriptions that I'd been taking, and she understood and agreed with this. I told her that I intended to return regularly and find a counselor in the area, and she said she could make some suggestions. She first asked how long I've been under psychiatric care (25 years), the diagnoses I've had over those years, what was the most recent diagnosis, the meds I've been taking to control it, and finally, how were they working for me. I answered all of her questions and happily told her that I haven't felt this good in YEARS. She proceeded to tell me that she wouldn't prescribe me the medications that I've been taking (with extraordinary success) for 3 years. She opined that she thought she knew a better combination. At NO time did she ever bother to communicate with my former doctor about my illness or the meds prescribed to manage it. She never even asked for her name. So my biggest fear about finding a new doctor - - - rediagnosis. The "I know better than all other doctors" mentality happened and she and told me the changes that she would be making. She knew that I had not yet found a counselor, yet knew in 10 minutes that I've been misdiagnosed all these years and inappropriately medicated. My temperament was not indicative of any problems that I was experiencing from my illness or my "cocktail" of medications, but somehow she believed that she had an insight that my doctor of 3 years did not possess. You might expect this from a young doctor, or recent graduate, but she is NEITHER. I was APPALLED at her arrogant lack of professionalism in failing to research my psychiatric history (except for the questions that I answered that were about my medical history and that of my immediate family), and IGNORANCE in her own field of practice. I don't ALWAYS believe that "if it aint broke, don't fix it," but she can't POSSIBLY know me after a 10 minute consultation. I would accept rediagnosis once I'd found a counselor and continued to see Ms. Talati with updates on my progress, but to arrogantly change someone's successful treatment just because she thinks she knows me better... well that is DEPLORABLE. I will never, ever, ever recommend Ms. Talati to ANYONE. EVER.
