Should I Repair or Replace my Furnace?

when to replace a furnace

Hvac Repair reviews in Union

I thought it went fine until this morning. I found a water leak coming from my furnace. I called my home warranty company who dispatched a local company. Found a piece of electrical tape had been placed over the hole where my condenser should have been draining. No one has touched my furnace since Pipe Works and that should have been caught during maintenance check. My condenser hose was also completely clogged and leaking. Also should have been caught during the maintenance. I paid Pipe Works over $1,300. I feel like I was robbed and will be filing complaint with BBB.

Normally I don't write negative reviews about businesses online but I feel this is necessary. Do not use Woolley Home Solutions in Union New Jersey. They do not care about their customers and will screw you by overcharging parts and charging you a, service fee to have someone come look at it. They also will refuse to let you buy the part you want and force you to buy a poor-quality overpriced part in which they pocket 77% of the price of said part. The story: I called because I was having a problem with my thermostat. I said on the phone it definitely needed to be replaced. They told me, "we have to send a service tech out and he will quote you on the price, the cost of the part may not be covered under your $250 (non-mandatory) Gold Plan." Which I said okay, are thermostats covered?" And they said, "The tech will let you know." So.... that's where the problems started 1. The service tech never showed up on Tuesday morning. It wasn't until Thursday that he even came. 2. He told me that the thermostat would need to be replaced. (Obviously. Thats what I told the lady on the phone). But then he said, "I'll have to charge you $76 for coming out today. And $176 for the Honeywell 5000 thermostat." $255 in total. 3. Now mind you, I already pay $250 a year for their "Gold plan" which covers repairs of 70 parts. This seemed like a good deal for a boiler because it covers one cleaning which I usually use each year. However it does not mention what parts it covers on their website, and they won't tell you on the phone before they send out a tech. So they force you to pay $76 for a driving fee when the parts are not covered. Then they say, oh we wont charge you if the part is covered. But here is the rub- How the hell am I supposed to know when a part is covered or not if they cant look it up before the tech shows up? They trick you so member or not you are forced to pay for this service fee. 3. So I said, "Okay well I see that the thermostat on the Honeywell website is $40. Can I buy the thermostat I want and have you come back to install it? I was thinking for that price Id buy a nest thermostat or something. I'll pay for installation and your drivers fee. The service tech manager says, "No. If you don't want us to install the thermostat now with the parts we have in the truck we will charge you $76 for just looking at it and we will not return to install the thermostat that you buy, because thats not how we make money and we have a business to run." So they intentionally put me in a hard spot. Their office is literally 3 blocks from mine and they charged me $76 just to LOOK at the broken thermostat even though Im a member of their gold plan. I tried to save them money by telling them the problem before-hand and then they basically spit on my cupcake and tell me it is frosting by saying the thermostat is $176.00. When really the cheap POS thermostat is actually $40. They are collecting $136 on the part (77% of the cost of the part). So for literally a 10 minute job in which I live only a few blocks away from the office they are going to charge A TOTAL OF $215.00 just to install a cruddy thermostat + $40 (cost of thermostat). = $255.00 After this year, once my gold plan has expired, I DEFINITELY will be taking my business somewhere else. Its a shame because all I wanted was a better thermostat for that price but they screwed me. With my hands tied, I had no choice but to use their service because they said they will charge me $76 if I dont do anything. They charged me, a loyal customer and member of their gold plan, $76 to tell me something I already knew. So far this year Ive paid over $500 for a thermostat and for them to clean my boiler. Not including oil prices. Its companies like this, who take advantage of people, (especially their loyal members!) that make me sick.

They used to be our oil company. Its been a couple of years. We converted over to gas, so they haven't been out oil company for close to 3 years. The were always a good company to deal with. We had no complaints for them. Another company put the gas furnaces in. We used to have a contract with them that took care of the cost. I dont remember the cost of the contract. My wife would know but she is not going to be home till around 8 O'clock to night. We had them for quite a few years. They handled our service well. They were excellent. We had no complaints. We used them for about 30 years. They were fine we had nothing to say. The were a good company. The deal was good. The pricing was acceptable. Their responsiveness was very good. If we had a problem with out air-conditioning we would call them and they come in and have somebody here and fixed it. Their professionalism was fine, no complaints. They were very good. They took care of things, cleaned up after themselves. It was fine, so yeah, it was okay. The workers were fine. No complaints. they were always friendly and courteous and it was fine.  I would tell a friend that they were a good company to use. I had not complaints.

    Linos HVAC
I sent a message at 11PM and got a response just a few mins after saying they can send someone at 7am next day to check on our A/C problem.   The tech (Jorge) promptly arrived and addressed the issue within an hour.  Thankfully it just needed refrigerant to be added and we did not have to suffer from the heatwave that day.  Jorge even fixed one of the flex ducts to improve air flow to one of the rooms.

Tony knew right away what it was when I called him. He was able to squeeze me into his schedule the same day and a holiday, thank god because I was cleaning floors every 4 hours with all the water that was leaking. He was very professional. Came in did his thing and in 45 mins it was all working correctly.

As part of a home inspection on our house sale, we were asked to replace degraded insulation around the air conditioning unit hose. I was able to schedule this task easily with Lino's. In fact, I had to cancel once and reschedule and it was a very efficient process to set another appointment. The provider arrived within the time frame given and quickly but carefully completed the work. Although this was a simple and straightforward job, I would definitely call this provider again for something more complex, based on the sense of confidence I got and overall good communication.

    American Home Remodeling Inc
I cannot say enough about American Home Remodeling!! I am absolutely ecstatic with the results as well as the process. My salesmen George and Nick were great. They were courteous, understanding, and down to earth. They were impeccably professional and attentive at all times. Let's face it, most of us want work done, but are a bit apprehensive about the process, prices, and potential horror stories. If you are looking for quality, worry free, hassle free, reasonably priced home improvement...look no further. American Home Remodeling worked on a house of mine in early 2000s. I was undoubtedly impressed with their work back then, but I wanted to be a "smart" consumer and shop around for this project. I had a few minor projects done throughout the years and have found it difficult to find a contractor or company that I have been able to confidently work with. I've found that good work, good price, good attitude are a hard trio to come by, I am so thankful that I went with American and got all 3, by far. I needed a lot of work done within a very tight budget. I had several estimates done and I have to say that George's was close to if not better than some of the small handyman style contractors and substantially less than the "larger" home improvement companies. I called American last because honestly I knew that I wanted to go with them based on my previous experience and from the more recent reviews I read, I could tell that they were still doing well and working well over 15 years later. During my conversations with my parents I also found out that American Home actually worked on my childhood home back in the late 80s!!! Now that's a name you can trust!! I went with American because I'm a single mom and work very hard. I cannot afford to be scammed or taken advantage of. After meeting with Gerogre and then Nick I had absolutely no doubt that my over 100 year old home was in good hands. American exceeded my high expectations!!!! George truly worked hard to ensure that I was satisfied and planned out every detail of the project. It was clear that they sincerely want a happy customer and that they each uphold their own high standard of getting the job done right. There was an old downspout from that ran down the the side of the new opening to my deck that had to be removed. George said "I'll figure something out" when we talked about it, and I gave it no further thought. A few days later I came home and saw that they not not only replaced the downspout but they installed a brand new gutter and relocated the downspout. Little things like that are what can cause added cost and aggravation at the end of a project. But American took care of it without a phone call or a back and forth negotiation that no customer has time or patience for after a long day. Nick and George were attentive and hands-on, they stopped by the sight daily to see the progress and communicate with the crew. George kept me closely updated, and I cannot say that there was anything that I wondered about during the process. George reached out to me regularly, so there was never a time when I was uninformed or unaware of anything. The staff that they employ are manerable, clean, and conscientious at all times and they thoroughly cleaned the job sight. I know this is getting lengthy, but I would like to mention that some of the work was done during my 2nd grade daughter's Spring Break. I did not overhear any inappropriate conversations, or profanity from the crew members. This I'm sure means a lot to some prospective customers with young children. Like I said I cannot say enough about America Home Remodeling. They are just all around family oriented hard working people who do great work. I am so looking forward to the next project I will be able to contract with them. This time I will NOT be wasting my time shopping around. American Home Remodeling is our official family home improvement provider! :) I would highly recommend you give them a call, you cannot go wrong when you contract with them!

Had a great experience with Lino's HVAC. Sorted through a few estimates and recommendations, ultimately chose them. Very fair priced, extremely knowledgeable. The crew that came put out tarps on the floor and were very clean. Very polite and answered any questions we had.

They were great and on time. This past winter we had about 28.5 inches of snow. All of a sudden, my heat stopped and there was no way anyone was going to get to the house. I texted them and they got back to me right away. He reminded me that the newer system that they installed had a heating component, that I could have used.

I?ve had the pleasure of working with Jim (and his partner Justin) for a few years now.  Both are highly professional, exceptionally skilled and know their profession.  I?ve called them back and passed their names on to others because they are reliable and can be trusted with whatever job they take on.The first time I used them was for a complete HVAC system replacement on a home that was originally oil heat.  The home was in bad shape and the heating system was even worse.  It probably could have been fixed, but it was totally inefficient and I prefer to use natural gas to the expense and hassle of oil.

I will break down each rating with an explanation.

    • Price-  In addition to contacting Zip Air, I also received estimates from 5 other guys.  One was a large well known company.  One estimate came in lower, the rest were about the same or higher.  I wanted the job done correctly and from the minute they arrived they gave the impression they knew their stuff which is why I went with them.  I?ve worked with many contractors on many different projects and I can state from experience the lowest price isn?t always the best. Overall their prices were very competitive and the quality matches.

Quality-  The specific job mentioned above was done in November 2014.  After 2 winters and summer everything is still running strong.  I?ve had Jim come back on 2 other occasions to add an additional return and move a duct for a kitchen renovation.  The job looks professional and not slapped together.  Looking at the unit is is apparent time was taken to properly install the equipment and all peripherals that go along with it.   The system also passed the towns inspection as well when closing out the permits with absolutely no questions on the quality or installation.
Responsiveness-  Both Jim and Justin were responsive to any questions or concerns.  As in many older homes, the ductwork was somewhat undersized on the return.  Instead of leaving as is which I am guessing many places would do?Jim came back and installed a properly sized return.  Justin came back on his own time as well to help with the removal of the large old unsightly oil tank.
Punctuality-  Both Jim and Justin have been on time for each and every job they were called on.  In fact, they were early and sometimes waiting on me.
Professionalism - Both guys are extremely professional.  One major thing that stood out was when getting the estimates they were one of two companies that actually went through the house and took measurements of each room to determine the correct HVAC sizing. **This is very important**  Every other place just wanted to replace the original equipment with something of the same size regardless of if it was correct or not.
Job # 2 On January 18th, 2016 I had them replace my parents hot water baseboard boiler.  The system decided to fail on one of the coldest days of the year and within a day they had the new system sized, replaced and installed without any issue.  Other than PSEG which came out because of the worry free contract and gave some astronomical quote, knowing Zip Air we called them and did not feel the need to call any other contractors and get an estimate.  Their previous illustrations of quality, punctuality and professionalism went a long way in us giving them the job immediately without having to call anyone else.  The system works perfectly and looks nice as well.   I would also recommend them for plumbing jobs as well as Justin is a highly skilled plumber for issues other than heating and cooling related.
On both jobs, they came back after the equipment was installed to ensure its proper operation.
I don't usually write reviews as I am very busy, but these guys are impressive...Highly Recommended.
