-Renovations did not start on the agreed upon date and went 3 weeks longer than promised.
-Workers cut the bathroom tiles with a hand grinder inside the apartment on the first day and on our balcony with the door open. Tile dust covered everything from our granite countertops, the television set, our couches, etc. (wife was 7 months pregnant at the time and should not be forced to vaccuum up that dust or breathe it in constantly when she is home)
-Shower subway tiles were installed crookedly and had many visible chips
-Workers did not anchor sheetrock as instructed
-Workers did not leave a functional toilet; the lid and seat had cracked when they tried to install it and they told us to go buy a new one and it was an easy fix.
-Workers did not paint the walls in a professional manner; color was streaked across our white ceiling and they did not use primer; paint is peeling already one week after they've gone; white streaks were clearly visible through spots on the wall. Paint around the vanity and door frame was crooked and streaky.
-Workers cleaned plaster and paint off their equipment in our kitchen sink and got plaster splattered all over our dishes and countertop, as well as dripped paint across our hardwood floors that they did not wipe up and it was dry by the time we got home.
-Workers actually took the liberty of taking OUR stepladder and dishtowels while they worked. The workers did not have a ladder or step stool to hang the shower tiles so they apparently went into one of our closets and found a utility stepladder. Also when they were cleaning and drying their rollers and brushes, we noticed they were using the two hand towels we had hanging in our kitchen by the sink. Obviously both were soiled with plaster and paint and dust to the point that we can no longer use them in our apartment. Workers also left one day and tried to take the stepladder with them. When we mentioned this to Giovanni, he said "don't worry they'll put everything back." We tried to explain the point was not whether or not they would put our stuff back, but why would they think it's okay to take it in the first place...and in that regard, what else did they take?? Again he was very dismissive and said "don't worry of course they wouldn't take anything else."
-Workers didn't brace the wall studs properly even though we mentioned that several different times. They braced the pipe for the bathtub (trap) with what appeared to be a TV cable wire and then put the wall back up anyway. When we forced the issue, they then had to open up the wall from the building hallway and fix accordingly (and the building at that point was ready to charge us separately for that damage/work).
-Giovanni told my wife she would be responsible for the cost of the plaster, grout, sealants, toilet rings, etc. on top of the $3k we already paid for labor which wasn't part of our contracted arrangement. When I questioned him about this, he said no I never said that...even though we have his messages that show otherwise.
-The electrical box was only screwed to sheetrock, never anchored into a stud or other anchor system so whenever a plug is pulled from the socket, the box is already coming out of the wall.
-Shower grout is already cracking in certain spots.
-When we pointed out that the shower tiles were sunken in, chipped and crooked, Giovanni said "don't worry no one is ever going to see that" and continued to argue with us for the duration.
-Shower drain/stopper was not installed properly, the handle to plug the drain was not threaded inside the tub when it was installed, so we are unable to plug the drain to run a bath. We had to call our building's plumber to come in and do the work separately.
-Vanity mirror has a huge crack on the inside beveled edges; most likely damage incurred during installation. However, if it was damaged in the box they could have told us an exchanged the mirror since it was from a local Home Depot -- instead they either went ahead and installed a broken vanity OR they broke it and never mentioned it to us.
-The very first time we tried to run the shower, water shot out of the wall behind the bathtub spout; apparently his workers had not screwed the spout on properly and our building maintenance crew had to come up and fix this. They said it looked like Giovanni's workers never bothered to run the shower to see if it worked properly.
-Original quote for the bathroom was $6k, which he dropped to $5.5k.
Please think twice about hiring Merino Builders, we just wanted to share our experience and frustration. We will never hire this person again and would hate for this to happen to someone else. In hindsight, the bathroom actually looked better prior to any renovations and we wish we could have avoided any of the stress and disappointment in dealing with this contractor.

I have spent $20,000 in the last year in just interest on my construction loans and I still do not have a home. Everything started out ok, but things seemed to change once they had my money. I am on my fourth project manager working on my property and there has been nothing but problems during the process. In the beginning David Cooper was very responsive, but after he received my money he was very hard to get ahold of, the quality, professionalism and overall job has gone down hill. I would never recommend him.
