Real People ~ Real Reviews ~ Real Results

  • Ten years ago we hired a contractor to replace
the shingles and re-seal the couple of skylights on our house. They came in at
a good bid price and got the work done quickly. We thought we were covered
until the roof started leaking again. Negotiations with the original company
fell apart when they indicated that the damage was not covered by the warranty,
even after the owner's son who came out to inspect it admitted that the
shingles were not installed properly. They would replace the roof, however we
had to foot the entire bill. Based on the quality of the work done the first
time and the hassle with getting them to fix it under warranty, we had no
desire to hire them again. So we checked Angie's list for a new contractor.
We contracted Olde World Restorations to replace
the portion of our roof that was leaking. What we ended up with was a
completely new roof and real peace of mind. John Hallman (the owner of Olde
World Restorations) came out to give us an estimate on the portion we were
looking to replace. During his inspection he also found other spots on the roof
system that were also badly damaged and at risk of being the source of
additional leakage. We spoke at length up on the roof with him showing me
multiple areas where water could penetrate and of skipped steps and shoddy craftsmanship
done by the previous and the original roofers. He explained step-by-step what
should have been done and with which materials it should have been done with
and the reasons for using those steps/materials.
At our request, he drew up three separate quotes,
one for the area we called about, one with another small section to be
replaced, and a third that captured an entire roof replacement. Ultimately we
settled on the full replacement. As the estimate was close to $20K with all of
the odd hips and layout, John worked with us on keeping the costs down by
reusing as much of the plywood decking that he could and only replaced what was
no longer serviceable. He included a number of new sheets of plywood in the
quote and anything over that would be on a time and materials basis.
The work took about three days (one day shorter
than anticipated), with a one-day delay due to weather. During those working
days John kept us appraised of the work status at the end of each day, whether
by phone or, more often than not, via a walking tour of the roof itself. He
also called during the day when any hidden issues were found, some of which
required replacing the framing surrounding of the chimney, and issues with the
skylights. Each time he would give us options and let us decide how to pursue
the solution, keeping us very engaged with the project. The unseen issues wound
up adding another $4K to the total bill. He also custom-built a solution to an
odd roof drainage issue we had since buying the house, as well as repaired some
of the soffit and fascia damage from the wind during Hurricane Sandy.
John strikes me as a very stand-up guy. I would
consider him to be philosophically on-par with Mike Holmes (Holmes on Homes on
HGTV) of Canada: Fix it with quality workmanship, fix it right the first time,
and go at least one level better than building codes require. He is especially
concerned with his reputation in the business, honesty, and on providing the
best quality work as possible. We felt very comfortable with John from our
first meeting to the final sign-off. We've only had one day of mildly inclement
weather since the work had been performed, but John called afterward just to
    make sure everything is okay.
While he certainly did not come in with the least
expensive bid, there is no one else I would have trusted with my roof. I got
what I paid for: a working roof repaired the right way, and peace of mind.

  • Sergio was very eager to meet our timetable, and when he had a cancelation at the last minute he let me know that he could come out a week earlier than planned, which was nice. The power washing was quoted at $239 (based on a special he was running through Angie's List) and he offered to add on the gutter cleaning for $35 extra (one gutter, actually). Because of the last minute change in plans he knocked off $15, which I thought was a nice gesture.
When Sergio arrived almost an hour later than we had agreed on we noticed that there was an ad on the side of his van that said his rate for power washing was $199, when we asked about that he said that was for local customers but we are only one town over so I am not sure how that mattered...but I figured that I would honor the price I agreed to, just as I would expect him to, but I can't help but wondering if his normal price is $199 but he ran a promotion for $239, down from his "list price" of $450, knowing that the folks from Angie's List would consider that a "bargain" and not question it.
I like the work that was done and the house hasn't looked this good since we moved in 13 years ago, but the way the pricing worked out and if the "deal" was misrepresented still sticks in my craw a few days later. What it all boils down to is that I should have done my homework before agreeing to the price. If you use Sergio for your own home you might want to find out what the non-Angie's price is because I feel like what you get coming from an Angie's referral might be higher than what you would be quoted than if you just called him up out of the phone book.

  • Returned my call promptly. They showed up on time and did a great job. I had booked a service to also have the outside of my gutters hand washed. When they showed up the guy said he thought he could get them clean with just the pressure washer but he would do the other process if I still wanted it. Turns out he was right. Saved me a couple hundred dollars. I was very happy with the service.

  • Fantastic experience. Very responsive throughout. Made the process of replacing my roof very straightforward. Told me exactly what to expect and delivered. Would use again and recommend to a friend.

  • I don't understand how a company like this can do business. How does anyone in business succeed if they can't follow up. Even if they don't want the job they can call back and explain that they are too busy or the job is not worth their time. So tired of contractors that don't know how to run a business.
