General Contracting reviews in Califon

Real People ~ Real Reviews ~ Real Results

  • Steve's price quote was the highest of the estimates that we received, but we hired Steve (All Square Carpentry) over other contractors for two reasons.   First, because when he walked around the home with us, he pointed out several items that needed attention that I had not noticed and he was able to articulate how he was going to address the issues.  This demonstrated to me the attention to detail that I had not seen in other contractors.    Second, he was going to personally take care of the trim work and actively manage the painting subcontractors while providing one point of contact and accountability back to me for the entire project.   This was very important to me because I travel for work and cannot be home each day before sundown to oversee progress.
Steve estimated that this project would take 5-7 days to complete.
The first couple of days went as planned.    A crew of 4-5 painters arrived and began working on multiple areas of the house.    By about day 4, Steve told me that they would be done in 1-2 more days as planned which is when I had my first chance to check in on the progress during the daylight.     For whatever reason, Steve had not been spending more than 10-15 minutes at the house each day and had let the painters go without supervision.  He had not checked the quality of their work or he would have seen that about 80% of the rotted areas that needed to be repaired or replaced had simply been painted over and multiple sections of the house had not been touched.     I walked around with Steve and pointed out all of the areas that I could see that had not been addressed and he in turn walked around with the painters who then went back at it..    3-4 days went by and Steve told me he was ready to walk around again and the painters would be finished by end of the day.    I met Steve at the house and we walked around again... and again, most of the areas that we had noted together on the last walkthrough were not addressed.       The next day the painters did not show and I called Steve to find out what was going on...  he said the painters quit and he was going to get one of his friends to come over and finish..   well his friend was marginally better than the painting crew and after another week and another few walk arounds, Steve stopped communicating and sent his wife Jane to come over and manage the completion of the project.    I never heard from Steve again.   Jane (who designs fragrance bottles for a living in NYC) was not much better than Steve, but to her credit stuck with us to get most of the work completed.
Start to almost finished took 7 weeks and countless hours of my personal time to stay on top of them.
The biggest issues was with the quality of the work and lack of oversight and management by Steve.
    - many of the new trim boards were not primed
    - fitment of the trim boards was poor (not unexpected since they were put up by the non-english speaking painters)
    - wood rot was painted over
    - shutters were only painted on the front where you could see
    - trim hardware was not painted
    - areas above ground level were only painted where someone could easily reach, if it took any additional effort to reach a spot, it was not painted.
    - caulking was only done haphazardly..
    - paint was not applied in ground level areas that were hidden from sight so boards with bushes in front of them were not painted.. seemed if it took any effort to reach a spot, they didn't moved.
I will not use All Squared Carpentry again and hope this review helps you with your decision to hire a contractor.

  • I thought I had a problem with a leaking toilet on the ground floor, but I concluded after having removed basement ceiling that I had a bigger problem. I was just not sure exactly what. Called A-1 Interior & Exterior and Ed came out and upon inspection observed that my relative new exterior door (Pela installed by a contractor employed one of our nation's largest home improvement chains) was not installed correctly causing water to enter. Damages proved substantial including rot and carpenter ants in joists, plate and studs. Ed and his assistant started work Saturday, worked some hours Sunday (whilst raining), Monday and Tuesday non-stop during day time hours, establishing extent of damages (and validating other work performed by the same installer - upon my request) and conducting thorough and professional repairs which involved jacking up house. Job site was left organized and swept each day. I was very impressed by the knowledge, work discipline, fairness in pricing, punctuality of A-1's services. I feel I got very good value for my money. That is a high threshold considering the repairs should have been necessary had the door been installed correctly to begin with.
The experience has given me courage to get other projects done that I had deemed likely too expensive and/or intrusive. A-! Interior & Exterior will likely be doing them.
