When testing my 9 year old Honda CRV to see what was causing a shimmy, Chris, my mechanic, noted an unusual whine under acceleration when changing from 3rd to 4th gear, and suspected this might signal a problem with the transmission that needed looking at. I asked him whether there were any transmission specialists who he felt were totally straight and totally honest and he referred me to Eric at Metuchen Transmission.
Eric drove the car around for a few miles with me in the passenger seat.  He said there was a slight whine but he thought it was minor and that tracking it down would require disassembling the transmission, and that he thought the transmission would most probably not give any trouble for quite awhile. I offered him to pay him for the 20 minutes he spent diagnosing the problem but he refused payment.

They made detailed description of the condition of the car (1997 Honda Civic with 230k miles) and made recommendations about which repairs would be worth doing, considering the mileage and condition of the car. Suggestions made a lot of sense. Printed explanation and description/recommendations were clear and convincing.
Service was friendly and on time.
Particularly liked their suggestion that fixing the minor oil leak would likely involve replacement of very expensive exhaust system components and that protecting my driveway from the drips would be more cost effective.

What a great experience. I surveyed a number of people in town about a good, trustworthy mechanic and just over a third of the 32 people who replied had recommended Justin at Bill's Ineffable Auto. And I can understand why. My car is only two years old and has just 6,200 miles on it, but I had been having a problem with the brakes squealing when I backed up. The dealer looked at it on three occasions and told me the brakes were fine, were exhibiting normal wear and tear, and that the squealing in the morning is normal. Over time it got progressively worse and it started happening throughout the day. It was so loud that it was embarrassing.
So I took the car to Justin. He and his team determined where the noise was coming from and that the problem was rust on the rotors. Justin called to let me know the findings and what the cost would be for the appropriate service. He said he was confident it would resolve the problem. It's been about three weeks now, and the brakes are so wonderfully quiet that I turn off the radio when I back up just to enjoy the silence! I was very happy with the whole experience and my husband and I will be taking our cars to Justin for service in the future.

I contacted several Honda dealerships in the area to try to get a good price. Before I talked to Mark at DCH, every other dealership either refused to give me complete pricing information over the phone, or they gave me information that was patently false. One place gave me the price and said "there may be additional fees" but refused to discuss what those fees might be. Another place gave me a price over the phone, promised there would be no extra charges, and then when I went in to buy the car they said the price I was given included a $500 discount for recent college graduates and a $500 discount for military service members, which I don't qualify for.
DCH, on the other hand, gave me a written "out the door" price, which was very competitive and included all fees down to the tire tax. Also, they seem to be one of the few dealers that don't add on a lot of extras and then force you to pay for them. They don't add on anything without you asking. The next time I have to buy a car, I'm going to go straight to them first.

We ordered tires on line, and had them shipped directly to Freedman Tire. Someone from Freedman called only a few hours after we placed order on line, and informed us that they have the copy of our order and will call again to schedule appointment once tires come in. They called just few days later and informed us that the tires are in, and scheduled an appointment. I drove to Freedman on day of appointment, and the tires were installed on that day and time. Tires were installed on scheduled date and time, and at price quoted. No games, no wasted time, no issues. A great overall experience! I'm planning to use them again on any other work my cars will need in the future!

The service department is good and professional and they tend to be timely or at least accurate on how long things will take.

As a dealership, I think they up-charge and make you think they are trying to give you a deal when they really are trying to rip you off. But that is pretty standard with car dealerships!

All these car companies have MSRPs available on the websites. When we went to purchase our Hyundai Elantra, we knew what the MSRP for the car that we wanted was. We had a coupon from them, because I was a previous customer from a previous car, for $2000 off. They tried to make it $2000 off the sticker price which was jacked up by $5-6000 with crap that nobody wants or needs like nitrogen in your tires or stripes on the outside and whatever other kind of stuff that is not what I wanted in car. But it doesn't look like that had one that didn't have that to sell to me, either. I had to drive a hard bargain to get the price that I wanted. I don't appreciate the entire industry that makes them feel like they are doing you a favor by giving you stuff in your car that you don't want and taking the discount off of that so that you are still paying $5000 over the asking price that is available to any person with a computer. But ultimately I bought the car from them because I got the price that I was willing to pay for it and they don't sell cars for less than the price they are willing to part with them for.

    West Lake Auto Center

They do a great job.  I highly recommend them.  They do high quality work at a fair price.  They are honest.  As a woman, I don't feel intimidated with West Lake and they don't "talk down to me."  I feel very comfortable going to West Lake for auto repairs.  They are much beter than going to the dealer and the price is so much more reasonable than going to the dealer for repairs and maintenance.

In particular, they were excellent on the fuel sensor repair.  The dealer wanted over $1200 for the repair and it cost me about $275 at West Lake.  They were going to automatically replace extra parts if it wasn't necessary.  The dealer wanted to replace other parts right from the start.  I think West Lake is very fair and honest.

They told me that I needed a new cabin filter.  I told them that I did not want it done at this time, but they had already removed it.  They did not tell me and I was riding around without a cabin filter.  I took my car to another auto shop and they said that whoever worked on the car last removed it and did replace it.  Another time before that, they told me that I needed a new latch on my hood, but when I took my car there after, they never said anything about it again.  I feel they were just trying to sell other services that were not required.

very bad inventory, only had models with many (expensive) options that I did not want.
they also included many dealer options that were VERY expensive ($800 for nitrogen filled tires....REALLY!?)
tons of fees.  Also beware, once a manager gets involved, you will get NO respect.

it went great. After having a horrible experience at another dealership and wasting half my day, I stopped here with little hope of humanity in any car salesmen. they proved me wrong. (may have been due to my experience earlier in the day) They immediately provided me with a very reasonable price - I did a ton of research and this was the exact price range I was looking for. I actually felt respected.
(Note, they're still a car dealer and charged for window etching and other fees which is very annoying. But as far as I can tell, best car buying experience I've had)
