    Gill, Dr. Thomas J.
He is at MGH Sports Medicine. He is a very thoughtful sports medicine doctor. He is very good at certain kinds of surgery. We have had excellent care. If I want to participate in sports and have an injury that needs attending to, then he is the doctor I would go to. It is hard to see him because he is busy but he makes time for people. He has been available. I wish the billing and administration weren't so efficient but it is really good too. I would rate him highly and will definitely use him in the future.

    Phillips III, Dr. James E.
Did an excellent job. Aggressive in post-surgery steps (which was good for me). Back to work in 4 weeks. Still doing well. Recommend him highly. Also, N.E. Baptist Hospital was great hospital setting for surgery. Terrific combination - surgical skills of Dr. Phillips and medical and educational services and support of N.E. Baptist.

    Fitz, Dr Wolfgang
I was very pleased with my surgical outcome.  The first few weeks are always rough for this type of surgery and you have to keep up with the pain pills and follow post-surgical instructions carefully.  However, my visiting nurse and home physical therapist said of all their knee replacement patients, I was among their top two in terms of swiftness of recovery and how great my knee looked.  In fact, the physical therapist got too aggressive with me because I was doing so well, so Dr. Fitz had her stop the therapy and I simply did stretching on my own, walking as much as comfortable, and my exercise bike with no tension on the wheel.  I was able to get off the pain medication ahead of schedule and love my new knee.  My only negatives are:  because Dr. Fitz is a fabulous surgeon with a great reputation, you will wait weeks for an initial appointment.  He is worth the wait.  When you meet with him, you have to have your questions handy (I find writing them down to be helpful) as he moves quickly.  He answers patient questions fully and is warm but is swift and doesn't linger for much hand-holding so to speak.  His physician's assistant, Kelly, is wonderful, very knowledgeable and generous with her time, and the front desk people are very nice and professional.  His surgical coordinator is great.  But, there are a couple of gals who answer the phone and push the paperwork behind the scenes whose manner and helpfulness could use some sensitivity training.  For example,  I needed a couple of pages filled out by his office for Short Term Disability insurance processing and was charged $20 per page, which is fine, but whoever filled out the forms did so in a sloppy manner with barely legible handwriting.  If they're charging for the service, the paperwork should be written neatly.  And, when I had to speak with one of the gals who handle this function, her sighs and curtness did not represent Dr. Fitz' office well.  Fortunately, she and her co-worker are exceptions, not the rule.  They are the only negative in an otherwise A+ office staff and environment.  I recommend Dr. Fitz to everyone who asks me.  He did my surgery at Faulkner Hospital where he said he has the nurses and physical therapists trained to do things exactly as he wants.  The staff there speak of him like he is a god--they say he is the best.

    Degroot, Dr. Henry
Dr. DeGroot's assessment of the injury was immediate and he performed minimal intervention (two screws in each injury, foot and ankle) with minimal cutting of soft tissue. His communication and bedside manner was informative, very engaging, and tailored to what I needed to know. Dr. DeGroot was exactly correct predicting the stages of recovery. He explained what I could expect at each stage of my surgery and recovery. He was always right and his accuracy was helpful for me planning my life to minimize disruption of my life. He was really attentive to every detail. From casting options to screw removal to anesthesia options. We discussed my options and what would work best for me. Dr. DeGroot even recommended special scooters for me to use instead of crutches and this improved my mobility and made coping with a long recovery tolerable. My best experience with bone repair and I have broken several bones over the years. Dr DeGroot even recommended I take up Aikido, appropriate for me, to develop strength, flexibility, and keep my weight in check. Very cool.

    UMASS HOSPITAL
I went to sport medicine at UMASS. The experience was fantastic. I cried when I heard that the doctor was retiring. The orthopedic had a funky name, and I loved him. Anybody who needs any orthopedic surgery, should not do it local, they should go to UMASS.

He has been great, and I'm very glad I saw him. He is of course very competent, but also thorough and patient in explaining everything about the situation- what he sees, what caused it, what can be done about it, and the prognosis. After administering a couple of injections (forgot what they're called, not cortisone, however) my knee has gone from very painful to simply a bit uncomfortable at times. I no longer use a cane, and am no longer remotely a candidate for knee replacement.

He was wonderful. He explained the surgery in detail to me. I was very satisfied with his work. He is a young doctor. I can go far but I can walk.

I was very happy with this facility. They are highly organized. They have to be as they are always busy. They help with all of the different orthopedic problems. I will continue to use them in the future.
