Great experiences highly recommend. Contractor who strives for perfection and delivers a completed project as promised. Designed a beautiful fire pit, stopped water intrusion into the structure, re-designed our landscaping, aggregate concrete and much more. A pleasure to deal with and great hard working crew.

The crew that performed the work at our house was amazing. The entire process went better than I would have imagined. The wall they built is very well built and looks amazing. The Grading work that was done was above and beyond my expectations. The crew was on time every day and were very respectful of our property, they cleaned up each day, took time to answer all of my many questions, and made my family feel comfortable while they were working. This was the largest investment I have ever purchased on any of my properties and I couldn't be happier with the end result. If you need work like this done, Give Hard Scapes the opportunity, you will not be disappointed. It is very hard finding any company now days that not only does what they say they are going to do, but then goes above and beyond your expectations.... I have found that in this company... Thank you to the entire Hard Scapes crew.. you are all the best!!

We are beyond thrilled with our paver patio and fire
pit.  We wanted our new outside space to be functional and fun, and not look like just another paver patio.  Clive had us sold when he spent over an hour with us just talking and listening to how we wanted to use the space.   He gave us great ideas about the placement and flow of the patio.  We loved the design he provided us, and he had a real vision for what the space would look
like.  He made our patio truly custom by using the same stone we have around our fireplace in the family room and the
brick that our house is made of.   He added features to the design that no other contractor thought about ? a bar
area around the grill, boulders strategically placed, added in the landscaping and the landscaping lights.  We could not
wait for our patio to be installed.
Jason and the crew were great to work with.   I have never seen a construction crew of any
kind work so meticulously and hard.   These guys were working during the hottest of hot this summer.   Every night they cleaned up everything ? tools, garbage, the work area.   They took are of the site as well as the yard around it.
We could not be happier with the finished project.  We love every aspect of the patio ? the stone and brick, the curves of the patio, the different paver materials, the boulders, the landscaping, the landscaping lights?.. It was truly amazing.  Clive had a vision, and it was perfect.
It has been such a pleasure working with Outdoor Artisan.  We would definitely use
    them again!

The job was completed, and all was good.  However when I contacted the company regarding erosion and our concerns regarding the stabilization of the gravel, erosion, and possible solutions, instead of having a look at the problem, I received this dismissive email (I also replied stating it was dismissive).
I spoke with Dan this morning.   He asked me to let you know that Blue
Max Materials carries the bonding agent product and they will be happy to
assist you in which product to use.   Gravel in flagstone bond will
need maintenance from time to time.
Dan said there is another product you can put in the joints called Gator
Dust.  It is a polymere sand for larger joints.  The people at Blue
Max will be happy to instruct you how to use this product if you so desire and
perhaps may even have the name of an hourly contractor who can do this for you
The original reason for the project was in part to reduce the overall maintenance in the yard.
I was disappointed in this response and will look to other providers.

The work was very professional and the customer service was excellent. The price for other jobs I had them estimate was only fair and the only reason I almost didn't give an overall A rating. However, they were friendly, hard-working, and did a great job of cleaning up. Therefore, I would certainly consider using them again.

We interviewed and received proposals from six contractors to design and build an outdoor living space.  Having had a similar project in our previous home, we had a good idea as to what we wanted as well as what mistakes to avoid this time.
After meeting with designer David Barbee a couple times, we felt his proposal best translated  what we wanted into a beautiful design. He asked thoughtful questions and was extremely patient during our revisions to the design.
The quoted price was comparable to the other firms and in line with our expectations.
The project went well and we were appreciative of the communication from Project Manager Billy Griggs.  He was often onsite ensuring everything went smoothly and answered any questions or concerns.
The crew doing the work was fantastic.  They were friendly, professional and did an outstanding job.
In the end, we are thrilled with our outdoor living space.  We wouldn't hesitate to use The Stone Man again and recommend them highly for your project.

Due to my own stupidity, I backed into the side of the garage.  This damaged the brick on the outside, from the ground to about 24-30 inches above.  I then went on Angie's List and contacted a number of general contractors and masonry experts.  Gary Manus was the first to contact me and has been VERY helpful.  As he requested, I sent a couple photos of the damage.  He was able to give a ballpark diagnosis, and provided a couple of different options.  He was also honest enough to recommend another contractor based on the price, depending which option we choose.  Gary then spent additional time on the phone with me to describe step by step the different options, as well as noting potential issues with the garage door.
He is sending me a contract tonight, and I look forward to reviewing it and continuing to work with Gary.  I would highly recommend him as your first call if you need any stone/masonry work done.

    Privette Enterprises (Visions Landscape)
The work went great.  They dug out  the subterranean tree roots and refilled the holes with clean soil, compressed it, leveled, and then installed and footing of sand and a top layer of stone screenings.
I was super impressed with the skill of their Bobcat operator, Brandon.  He did an excellent job. The footing and top layers are very even and supportive of my horse's feet and legs.
Their price was the highest estimate I had received and I had to wait some weeks (note: this was due to the excessively wet and rainy summer weather this year) but in the end they were worth both the price and the wait. I plan to have them back to do other work on my property.

    • I found Outdoor Life on Angie's List and was not disappointed. The owner of Outdoor Life, Bill Botkin, has skills not often found in the industry. These set him apart.
    • He has multiple certifications and his company has a fourteen year track record.
    • He is an engineer by education and training.
    • He only takes on projects in which he can personally supervise.
    • He personally works on every phase with his employees.
    • He treats his employees with respect.
    • His employees were polite and aware of how their work affected neighbors.
    • He and his employees perform all the trades with no subcontracting.
    • He has excellent relational skills and listens well.
    • He has a strong work ethic and works quickly.
    • He stays with a project until completion and does not divide his time with other simultaneous projects.
    • He strives to please the customer.
    • He presents a detailed work scope and estimated cost proposal in writing.
    • He is honest and trustworthy.
    • His work is of high quality.
    • He guarantees his work for life.
    • He is not the least expensive, but it is a fair price for quality work and peace of mind.
Based on my project I found these attributes to be true. He responded quickly to my request for a quote by personally visiting the site. Even though it was late in the day, I was impressed by the time he took to visit and discuss our vision. He then prepared a detailed scope of work proposal. After several revisions and a signed contract he gave an accurate start date. He also finished the project in the agreed upon four weeks.
The written Scope of Work to be performed is the most important step for both parties as it establishes realistic and definable expectations. You should take whatever time it takes to be sure of exactly what work you want, what materials will be used and what the expected cost will be. Bill agrees with this and tries to get it right. Outdoor Life is willing to do whatever you want to pay for, but neither party wants surprises. Any changes to the contract should be in writing. I would also recommend that you insert into the contract specific phase sign-off times. That is, at important steps the owner should approve the current work before proceeding to the next step. An example would be to approve the layout of footings before pouring concrete or the style of grouting etc. This will also speed up the completion by removing unexpected stoppage. I did not do this and it would have facilitated better communication and eliminated assumptions from both parties. I also supplied a drawing to scale for the project design and made it a part of the contract. This need not be a professional drawing but should be an accurate representation of the work scope that guides the project. All of these should also serve to reduce stress by getting owner couples on the same page and diminishing the tendency most owners have to micromanage the project. Nothing is worse than two owners having a different vision in their head. We did well for the most part and the marriage survived.

Bill made an extra effort to work directly with the stone quarry to get the color of stone we wanted and to hand select and deselect stone. He emailed pictures of stone for my approval. He paid attention to our specific request and was patient with our particular point of view. He gave good counsel when asked and shared what he has learned from other projects.

This was not a perfect project. There were errors made, but none due to incompetence or lack of concern. The essentials were met. Under the best of circumstances there will be the unexpected and the misunderstood. Having worked with a number of contractors and vendors over the years I found Bill Botkin and Outdoor Life to be among the best with which I have worked. We now have a first class outdoor living area that took the best advantage of the site. I have confidence that it is a good investment from both financial and lifestyle perspectives and that Outdoor Life will stand behind it. I hope I have the opportunity to use his services again.

New to the area, I relied on Angie's List to find a good contractor to help me with work on a new house.  I bought a foreclosure in need of some key improvements due to the mold issues in the garage as well as the drainage issues in the front yard.  Also, I had a pool table that I wanted to make room for above the garage that required expanding the room width (we did this by adding a large dormer on the side of the garage.

After interviewing a few contractors, I decided on Chris because of his attention to detail and vast knowledge for the job(s) I needed done.  Chris has proven reliable on all jobs I had him do, everything was to my satisfaction and then some.  For example, Chris did things he was not even contracted to do such as clean all my gutters out (which were completely full of debris and leaves).  Another thing he included that was not contracted for was new painted shutters for the front of the house.  Doing little things like that go a long way.  The overall job did take a couple of weeks longer than I expected, but this was attributable to the weather not cooperating when we needed it to.

I already have a few more jobs for Chris and fully expect to use him again and again.
