    River Road Animal Hospital
We recently moved to a new city and had to change vets because of geography. We found this vet and had visited only a few times. I thought they were a good clinic although very pricey compared to our old vet in Wilmington , NC. A few months went by and we were having a pet emergency. Our 1 1/2 year old dog was bleeding from her ears. She had an ear infection and clawed herself inside of her ear and tore it up very badly. My wife took the next day off of work to take her to the animal hospital . We were told that we were welcome to wait and see if an appointment would open up but they couldn't guarantee it and that we may want to make an appointment somewhere else if we could find another vet's office!! My dog was bleeding from her ears! I couldn't believe anyone would say that. It is unprofessional at best and negligent. Needless to say now I drive an hour to my old veterinarian's office rather than the five minutes it would take me to get to river road animal hospital.

    River Road Animal Hospital
We call ahead of time, and the medicines are ready for us to pick up within the half-hour. Office visits are nearly always punctual and professional. Dr. Travis takes the time it needs to check and treat our dog. If he needs a referral she takes care of it immediately. When we have an emergency, she sees us as fast as we can get our dog to her office. The first visit we made there was when our previous vet said they didn't have time to see our dog (with an emergency). We called River Road, although our dog wasn't even a patient there. They said to come over and they would squeeze him in as fast as they could. We switched to River Road and haven't been sorry. They are the best.

    CAPE FEAR SPAY NEUTER CLINIC
We've had favorable experiences with Cape Fear Spay Neuter Clinic since 2006 (as we were in the "unfortunate" habit of taking pity on homeless cats that show up on our doorstep to "adopt" us, lol); and this time was no different. Even though our rescued kittens this time around were not too accustomed to handling by strangers (having been raised outdoors by a nervous, semi-feral mom cat for their first two months of life), the staff did remarkably well with them and they were noticeably sweet-tempered during their ferry ride home.

The price is most reasonable at Cape Fear Spay and Neuter; and their veterinarian, Dr. Audrey Mizrahi is extremely caring. The clinic staff go out of their way to have low-cost services. I had also referred my brother-in-law to the clinic (in March of 2007) for his adopted cat; and he's reasonably pleased with the services he got and what he was charged for them. We would definitely, unequivocally recommend this clinic to anyone needing to get their pets (or temporary foster animals) spayed or neutered!

They deserve an A, having gone "above and beyond". Just one example of this: Following a previous visit about two years prior, one of our cats developed an allergic reaction to some topical flea medication shortly following his neutering procedure with the clinic. It was a difficult time for us, because we'd just experienced a recent death in the family -- we were grieving plus our schedules were really tight and we were "all over the place," both physically and emotionally. We called Dr. Mizrahi and explained the situation. She met my husband at the clinic (we live about 40 miles out-of-town) and treated our cat with sub-Q fluids. He felt good as new, and Dr. Mizrahi didn't charge us, even though it happened on a weekend and their clinic wasn't the source of the particular medication we suspect may have initiated the negative interaction. Now THAT's service!

During this most recent visit, the clinic staff recognized me when I came back in, and on the phone they remembered that I had two cats altered there from about two years ago. I think they appreciate the fact that people are being conscientious about doing their part to help control pet overpopulation; and that really shows through their dedication to their work. It's not just they're in the business to make money -- you sense that they really, genuinely care about the animals. That's more than could be observed (in my personal experience) about some other veterinary practices located in southeastern North Carolina.

You have to bring the animals in early (like by 8 or 9 a.m.) on a weekday morning and pick them up in the late afternoon. It's not like with a regular veterinarian's practice where you make an appointment at a day and particular time more precisely suitable to you (which would be a little more convenient). For the prices, though, you can't complain. :) Also it may take a little while to get an appointment scheduled, depending on the time of year and other factors. On the plus side, however, I've never had them cancel an appointment. It is definitely worth the wait and planning ahead for your cat (or dog)!

The only caveat is, I would recommend caution regarding some microchip vendor partners. We paid $30.00 each at Cape Fear Spay and Neuter for four microchips for the mother cat and her kittens, only to later find out that there were yearly additional "maintenance fees" required to keep your registration current with the manufacturer, in this case 24PetWatch. In fairness to Cape Fear Spay and Neuter, there is a disclaimer at the bottom of the manufacturer's printed promotional for the patients' families who choose this add-on service; but it is in tiny print and (being pressed for time that day) we had overlooked it.
I feel that this is counterproductive, if not a bit unethical on the part of the chip vendors to do this; because pet owners who are financially-challenged (and thus most often seeking low-cost spay/neuter services) are the ones least likely able to afford these recurring fees. Lost pets whose registration has "expired" will not be able to find their way home from a shelter or veterinary clinic;, and could sadly wind up euthanized. :(
As an example, after my brother-in-law had moved (with his cat), we called the company to verify Precious' information; only to learn that they were no longer registered in their database and it would cost between $35 and $50 to update it with the new contact address and phone numbers. Nowadays there are free registries online, however, that will accept most manufacturer's chips; and we find this to be a workable option.

    Southport Animal Hospital
We have been using this animal hospital for the past 10 years. All the staff, the doctors and the nurses and assistants are excellent. We
have had to have 2 of our older cats treated for illnesses and unfortunately put down over the past 2 years. In both instances they
received outstanding care during their illnesses and the most dignified treatment when euthanized. The fee included private creamation.
The only and quot;Band quot; rating is because they do not have regular weekend hours.

    Zeetlegoo's Pet & People Store
I love them and they are a good one. They have been in business for six or seven years and I don't but anything from any other company buy them. I pay a little bit extra as its quality things and I am supporting my local business. They don't sell animals, but they sell pet supplies because they believe in adoption, so they don't support the puppy mills. Their staff and their variety stand out about them. They have good variety, and if I can't find it there they will order it for me which I have had them do before. They are willing to give samples of things to try and see if my dog likes it and then they will order it, and that's how they got me on canned dog food for my dog too. They gave me a sample can and he loves it, so now I order it by the case. I know I pay a little bit more, but it's worth it because its quality things and she is very much in to nutrition and a holistic and things are grade A in there. When I order something they call me when it's in. I can take my dog in the store and they encourage that.

    Adam's Folly Bed & Biscuit
I was, as always, very pleased with Adam's Folly and their staff. My dog needed to be given 6 pills daily for a period of time during his stay. The staff said NO PROBLEM. He was also on a special diet which they followed. I called to check on my boy and I was assured that he was doing fine and playing well with the other dogs. I do not worry about my boy being left in the very capable and friendly staff at the kennel. They know how to work with the dogs to ensure that they are not left alone in in a big group, unlike the kennel I used before where my dog was attacked. The owners and staff focus on going the extra mile to ensure the safety, happiness, and well being of the dogs they care for!

    Adam's Folly Bed & Biscuit
I called to check on him and was told he was doing great and was being the WalMart greeter of the kennel! I am thoroughly happy with Adam's Folly and their staff. They supervise the dogs and do not allow them to be in a pack out in the yard, unlike my past experiences at another kennel. If you want to relax on your vacation and not worry about the safety of your dog I recommend Adam's Folly.

    Southport Animal Hospital
They were absolutely wonderful. We asked to have a private cremation. They are very compassionate. We have seen three different vets at that facility. Each one has been absolutely wonderful each time we have taken any of our animals in there. Their fees are very reasonable. We set up specific times for appointments and they take us immediately. That is really important when dealing with animals. They helped to ease the situation when we had our oldest guy put down and a few days later we actually received a sympathy card in the mail from the vet that performed the service, which we thought was terrific. The overall experience has been excellent. They don't have vets on call for out of hours which is the only drawback but that is small considering everything they do. They will keep pets overnight but you can't bring pets in after hours. Their prices are very good and better than what we had in New Jersey.

    Adam's Folly Bed & Biscuit
My dog had a bad experience at another kennel, he was bit and the owners were unaware of it! I was afraid to leave my dog at a kennel again. I chose Adams Folly am am very pleased to report that my dog was welcomed there and treated very well! The staff took care of my dog per my wishes! Cottage cheese on his food, treats, and plenty of love were given to him! I am so relieved to have found a place that genuinely cares for animals and has their best interest at heart! The business is very clean, orderly, and the staff is very friendly. I highly recommend Adams Folly!
