  • Our overall experience in dealing with Carolina Boat and Trailer and Mike Betts was extremely frustrating, completely disorganized, exhibited questionable integrity and we would not conduct business or recommend him or their gelcoat service to any boatowner's looking for a reliable, trustworthy and professional service for selling their boat.  This was without a doubt the worst experience I've ever had in selling any product and is what helps to give boat dealers a bad name and reputation!
    While he sounded confident and reassuring when we first met with him to sell our boat, throughout the entire time he represented us, we found the website had different listing prices for our boat from our discussions and agreement with Mike.  There was also about a 15-20% difference in what we were able to sell our boat for and Mike's original estimation.  Our boat had no major mechanical or maintenance related issues (i.e. less than 100hrs of usage) and we proactively completed using his services/ recommendations all items he felt needed to be addressed to further improve marketability (i.e. underside gelcoat replacement $1,200, trailer tire replacement $400, $200 boat detail)
    Upon originally agreeing to have Mike list our boat, we had the undercoat of our gelcoat repaired by the recommended gel coat specialist Mike recommended.  This same individual completed our boat detail and did a detailed compounding detail.  While the exterior of the boat shined like new, we found the trailer wasn't cleaned (considered by the detailer to be extra) and the inside while wiped down was still dirty and far from cleaned.  The promised rivet repair on several spots of the cover and one particular spot on the boat wasn't completed until approximately a month afterwards after repeated requests.  In addition, the gelcoat repair failed to fix all the spots originally promised when I originally met with the gelcoat specialist.  When bringing this to Mike's attention, he took no ownership or accountability and indicated that was between me and the specialist.
    At one point we had an offer for our boat presented to us by Mike from an out of state buyer, which we accepted, contingent upon us replacing the four tires on the trailer.  In good faith in Mike and the buyer, we authorized Mike to replace the trailer tires with new tires believing we would recoup our cost with the sale of the boat.    Upon inspection of the boat, the prospective buyer decided "it wasn't what Mike had represented to him and wasn't what he was looking for" and walked away from the deal.  As a result, we were out around $400 for tire replacement on a trailer which we would not have otherwise agreed to have performed without an offer.  Mike refused to keep the deposit of the buyer or to reimburse us for this unnecessary cost.  
    Throughout the entire time Mike represented us (April-September) he consistently (i.e. on multiple occassions) failed to call us back with updates when promised on key items such as potential buyer negotiations, potential buyer testdrives, proved unresponsive to questions/requests of buyer traffic online/at the lot, failed to provide requested documentation and the status of viewing traffic felt our boat was not marketed appropriately.  Approximately 90-95% of the time the only way I was able to obtain any information was to show up in person at Mike's office or repeatedly call his cell phone until he answered as he did not return voicemails.  On numerous occassions, we found the website (a primary mechanism Mike relies upon), was consistently outdated and didn't reflect current boat inventory and pricing of our own boat.  
    We found the 10% fee Mike charged us to be extremely high and undeserved based upon the poor quality of service provided by Mike throughout the sale of our boat.  We also had to pay a monthly boat storage fee and documentation fee in addition to this 10%.  Upon the final sale of our boat, we sold the boat for about a $1,000 loss rather than the several thousand dollar gain we had realistically expected based upon conversations with Mike.  Boat originally listed for around $35,5k and sold for $30 k not counting our out of pocket for gelcoat, storage fees, tires and documentation fees.  
    Finally the final sale paperwork from our boat has yet to be received from Mike after repeated attempts.  Mike sold our boat in September 2013.  As of January 2014, we still have not received the final purchase order of our boat sale upon repeated requests via email and voicemail to Mike.  Requested emails for this documentation were sent to him on 9/18/13; 9/23/13; 12/17/13; 1/6/14 & 1/13/14.   As a result, I am now not going to have the necessary paperwork for our personal property tax disclaimer to Gaston County by the required 1/31/14 deadline.
