  • I went into the store on a Saturday when no managers or jewelers were on site.  My thoughts were that I could get a feel for what the quality of their products were and also just to mention that I need to get a business card for the owner or jeweler.  The reason I needed services subsequently is that I had my engagement ring become damaged and knew that I would need a repair or even possibly a replacement for the setting itself.  As my policy is good for upwards of 14,000 dollars; I had no reason for the clerk to think that I was in any way a problem customer.  Nevertheless,  I asked the tall, short haired gentleman about taking my main stone out of my ring so that I could send my setting to my insurance company with USAA and then to subsequently work with them on replacing the setting with something that insurance would pay for.  Now at this point he seemed happy to show me their semi-mounts and I did find one that I appreciated.  I explained to him that I prefer to have my diamond removed in my presence as I've never let the 1.5 ct asscher cut leave my site and though I have it insured, it values for far higher than what we payed for it, as it was purchased in a wholesale jewish district in NYC and we would be remiss to just let someone take it in the back of their store.  I told him that I've done this with all my interactions with jewelers and with no problem.   The sales clerk neither offered a business card or phone number for the manager or jeweler, nor did he have a pleasant attitude when he explained to me that they could not pull the stone out of the ring, while at the counter, "for insurance reasons".....and that they would "never in a million years do any harm to anyone's rings...that their integrity mattered more than my ring".  To which, I thought ""if this were being said to me in a kind manner and tone, I'd be ok with the sentiment of this message, if not the actual content".  Unfortunately, the attitude was that he was too good for my business and that he would never consider it an option to do such a thing. I found it odd that he took it upon himself to snub me; he did not ask a manager; nor did he actually inquire to the jeweler about insurance policies via a telephone call or just a statement that he'd have to ask about it.  While it's true that clients may not go into any jewelers back room without the express permission of the owners and that that is indeed an insurance problem...there is no insurance issue with pulling a stone from a setting, while at the counter.   Granted this person's inexperience with high-end jewelry market items may be a reason,....still, I find it hard to believe in this day in age that someone could not just be kind to me and state "You know I'm not sure that we can do that, but let me ask my manager to get back to you.  May I get your phone number please?"
That's all it would have taken.  My husband concurred with me that the gentleman's manner was far from gentlemanly or professional and we decided to take our 14,000 business somewhere else.  I guess this company has no need for extra sales in this recessional economy.   Carry on, we will too.
