We hired a local architect to develop plans in order that the 3 bids we received would all be on the "same sheet".  This build took approximately 6 months.  During that time, we rented nearby and where able to keep a timely eye on the build's progress.   That close proximity proved advantageous as VB's construction manager's mobility was severely limited due to health issues.   This issue was exacerbated by the fact that the build spanned 3 floors (the house is on stilts).  The owner of VB rarely if ever showed up on site unless there was an issue that require resolution.  And.....when there was an issue, it was NEVER VB Construction's fault. There was always some external reason why there was an issue.....or that we were effectively imagining an issue that did not exist.
The build included the addition of a new deck that wrapped around to a new front entrance. Unfortunatley, the deck was not built with the same quality wood as our previous deck.  As such, the hand rails and pickets are warping/twisting and becoming detached in various places despite it being only 2 years old.  The main stairway leading up to the deck is not square either.  I noticed this relatively recently when walking towards the house from the street and confirmed with a level.  Interestingly, as part of the build, VB Const. had to detach our rear exterior deck stairway.  When they put it back in place, it was not level.  When questioned I was originally led to believe I was seeing things (always the initial response from the builder).  A level confirmed I was right.  When questioned about the warranty on the new deck, VB Const. commented:  "we don't warranty the wood".
Furthermore, the new entrance doorway has never worked properly,  The door sticks and is sometimes almost impossible to close and lock.  I have had another builder to the home who believes the door was not framed properly.  VB Const. did make a number of attempts to realign the door without success.  He finally said, that's all we can do.  We are now stuck with a main entryway door that does not function properly.......incredibly frustrating.  VB's door guy told me he would install a different door at his cost. When I finally went to take him up on his offer, his price was so astronomical it was clear he did not want to be bothered and was planning to recoup his labor in the cost of the door.
We contracted for (2) new Carrier HVAC units.  When installation came, PAYNE systems where installed.  We where told that PAYNE is a Carrier system.  Well, PAYNE is the cheap, contractor grade variant of PAYNE.   Just last month (June 2012) the blower motor in our downstairs air handler went out.  The HVAC installer responded and placed a new blower motor on order since they did not have any in stock, despite the technician telling me that they have multiple issues with this variant of motor.  It took 3 weeks for that blower motor to arrive!  3 weeks during the summer in NC!   After week 2 they came out and installed a temporary blower motor.
Over time, we have noticed that the home shakes when someone (110lbs) walks across the MBR floor above.  It makes me wonder as during one of my visits in the midst of construction I brought up a creaking sound emanating from the newly applied subfloor.  The builders (according to the construction supervisor) had installed a prefab joist improperly.  At that point, their "fix" was to apply additional screws and glue where the joist/floorboard met and wedge a 2x4 underneath the joist until it all set.  I am not a builder so I could not really comment but intuitively it did not seem like the proper fix and we currently have part of our house that noticeably shakes, even when a petite person makes their way across the top floor.
I am not overly concerned about "ankle biter" issues with a large build.  But, when your main entryway door fails to operate properly,  your new deck is warping and twisting and not square, and the home shakes when someone walks across the top floor, I have to question the quality of workmanship.  I may be generous in my grading because we are thrilled to be in a new version of a house we have owned for over 20 years and the folks like the cabinet maker that VB Const. recommended did a fine job.   We are very pleased with all of our cabinets.  However, our overall first experience with a significant build could probably have been better.

I paid them $10,000 and all they did was beat the heck out of my roof. They used the wrong nails and did a terrible job. I wouldn't recommend them to anyone.

Project began on time. Was delayed by delivery of wrong window and by weather. Overall, project was outstanding.

They are amazing. They knew their stuff and we are very pleased. They started the work about a year ago and finished this fall.
