    Roberson CPAs
This is the best CPA firm in Durham. I HATE taxes and they make it as painless as possible. I have been with them for over 25 years and even though I live in another state now, I send my info back to them because I know it will be done right. But, dont call them if you want to do fake tax returns. They are legit, honest and by-the-book. You cant go wrong here if you want it done right. Not cheap either, but a quality firm and highly reliable.

I used this firm for several years, and had a great accountant named Worth Colvard. He was on the higher price end, but was very responsive, quick, and accurate. Worth unfortunately retired and handed my taxes over to a Donna Dillehay, a more junior person, and things went downhill. She took forever to do my 2015's, and either ignored my questions or charged me a la carte for them, often several hundred dollars. My taxes weren't totally simple -- several W2's, some 1099 consulting work, and some alimony -- but they are far from "complicated". I'll say the final bill on those taxes was more than double the most I've ever paid, before or since, on my 2015 taxes. And than was only the beginning. I started getting fines and penalties the next year, and it took me until June of 2018 to get everything straightened out. She'd ignored my questions about quarterlies, which ended up with me having to seriously scramble. She forgot to enter 2 of my 1099's, which hit me with penalties and taxes. I had withdrawn some 529 money, and she never told me I had to fill out a a form on that one. What truly upsets me is that she charged me extra for cleaning up the mistakes, blamed them on me, and then threw an extra high interest "service fee" on top of that for the month we argued about whose fault it was. I have moved to another accountant who is personable, reasonable, and accurate, and am so glad that's over with.

    DMJ & CO
Poor, ineffective tax accountants. They made an error on my prior tax statement by not including a form for a roll-over IRA- the IRS sent me a notice of tax deficiency. DMJ eventually remedied it (by filing the form that they should have initially filed but did not). But then they charged me to fix their error. I had a colleague who also used them - same thing happened to him. My colleague was audited by the IRS and found that this accountant had made a mistake. He was asked to pay DMJ to fix it. Since going through all of this, I have switched to a new tax accountant. The new accountant is well regarded, communicated well, and charged me LESS for my return. Most importantly, the new accountant did not charge me for time asking questions (which this company does). I asked the new accountant to look over what had happened with this particular form/tax deficiency. They agreed that DMJ made a mistake. DMJ nickles and dimes you more than other accountants I have seen - AND makes mistakes. Be wary of this group- would absolutely recommend going elsewhere. Cost listed below is what they charged to fix my taxes. Cost for the entire return was over $600, cost to file the forgotten form, an additional $300.

Our main concern and surprise was the bill that came at the end. As others mentioned the cost was very high. We should have asked for an estimate, and so the bill was much more than anticipated based on previous experience  we had from a comparable  company in another state. The provider was understanding about our concern and explained the charges.
In the future I I would get a written  estimate of the work to be done. If using a company that charges by the hour, prep work done in advance should reduce the final charge. While work is being done check with the provider to see if they are on target with the estimate.

    Number Crunchers Inc

In 2012 I worked worked half the year under 1099 and the remainder of the year with W2. Number crunchers neglected to file my 1099 income. Received over $25K notice of due taxes, late fees, and penalties. Number crunchers stated that I did not submit the 1099 form to them, yet it was included in my copy of that years documents.

We decided to use Melody/Number Crunchers for our taxes after a friend told us she was very highly rated on Angie?s List. We had a nightmarish experience with her and were very disappointed in her work, as well as her attitude and lack of professionalism dealing with the various mistakes she made on our taxes.
I used Melody for my 2012 taxes and my husband and I used her for our 2013 taxes. There were two separate issues: the first is mistakes that she made in completing our taxes both years. The second (and perhaps more alarming) was her failure to even file our taxes the second year despite accepting payment and telling us she had filed them.
The first year she did my taxes she completed them, I paid her, and she sent me the final vouchers to send in what I owed the government. But then the next morning she sent me an email saying she?d uncovered errors in her work and that I should shred the final docs she?d sent me. I was actually owed money instead of owing! And it was a difference worth thousands of dollars. I was distressed at this oversight but happy to be getting money back, so I decided to give her another shot the next year despite the alarming error.
The next year she did my husband and my taxes jointly. Once complete she told us that we owed ~$12,000, which is about six times more than we were expecting to owe and completely out of the range of what we should have owed. We expressed our concerns, and she insisted it was correct. We finally asked if she could walk us through it on the phone because it just didn?t seem possible, and after about half an hour of trying to explain how we could possibly owe that much to us (none of which made any sense) she realized she had made a simple error and forgotten to check a checkbox somewhere ? according to her she?d been trying to turn in our taxes as a single person instead of two people because she?d copied my single returns from last year as the basis for the next year?s taxes. We owed about $10,000 less than what she?d told us we owed.
After the error was corrected on our 2013 returns, I wrote Melody and asked if there was anything else we needed to do to square away the taxes for that year and she responded that there was not, she had already efiled our taxes and we just needed to pay her. We paid, but in fact, she had NOT filed our taxes, which we discovered 7 months later in October 2014 while trying to buy a new house. The IRS claimed that there was no record of our 2013 taxes being filed. After much frustration and many work hours diverted to the phone with the IRS, we realized that Number Crunchers had failed to file our taxes altogether, despite having told us that they had and accepting payment. Melody never apologized, and reacted to this information by telling us that it was our fault and she hadn?t filed our taxes because several documents were missing that we needed to sign: an engagement letter and a 8879 form.
This was a surprise, as Melody had never previously mentioned these documents and had never given us copies of them. Since we never met with her in person and all our communication was via email, there is a clear record showing that she never gave them to us. When we finally got our hands on the documents 7 months later and read them, one of them even says that she isn?t allowed to begin work on your taxes without it being signed, which was another alarming error on her part.
She did finally get our taxes filed, albeit 7 months late. She also offered to write an accountant?s letter to try and get fees waived that we might incur from the government for filing them so late. When we wrote her expressing our dismay at the whole interaction she never apologized, and continued to insist it was all our fault, without ever addressing the fact that she'd never given us the papers and that she'd lied in writing about having filed our taxes.
We were very disappointed in the service, the multiple egregious errors in her work, and her defensive and non-customer oriented
attitude as soon as problems arose. Finding a good accountant is hard, because you're paying them for work that you essentially can't judge the quality of yourself. If Melody made these kinds of errors on our taxes both years, I worry about how many mistakes she's making in general that are going unnoticed.

It was great! I took all our documents out to Aron's house and it took him a few hours to do them. We were going to do them ourselves but had some trouble figuring out how to claim some education-related expenses. (More complicated than usual.) Aron was personable, professional, and seems to know his stuff. Plus, his price was significantly less than what was quoted from other companies.

I used Debra. It was a lot more than I thought it was going to be. Typically they are not CPAs and I could have probably gone to a CPA. They are pretty expensive and most of the receipts I took in, they told me were not deductible. She was very efficient but I don't know if she was accurate. I was really disappointed in the price. She was quite punctual. Eventually I will double check my return and if I find errors, I will go back to her. Then I will find someone else. I didn't have time to do it this year.

This year was the second time I requested  their services.  The first year I thought the lack of responsiveness was due to the busy tax season and I could overlook it. But having had the same experience this year I am very frustrated.  Not returning phone calls and  email messages, unless you contacted them  several times , is unacceptable.  I also had to keep repeating answers to the same questions, as if the individual working my tax return was never listening or taking notes.  In my opinion, my tax return was relatively simple, yet the fee they charged seemed a bit high. I initally chose them seeking a trusted advisor for guidance with my taxes and property rentals, but am clearly disappointed that service was not delivered.  I can confidently say I will not be a repeat client in 2015.

I met with him for 50 minutes, during which time he asked where I went to college, then told me how rude people from my school were. He also shared with me, an African-American, how he had gotten a job because he was white. He then celebrated how the people he worked with in that job had to put up with him, despite his being "the most arrogant person (one co-worker) had ever met". When I told him I wanted tax advice, and not someone to prepare my taxes every year, he proceeded to tell me why "that's the dumbest thing you can ever say to an accountant". When I asked about his fees, he responded, "If you need to ask, then you can't afford me". When I let him know I had heard learned enough from our interview to make a decision, he let me know that he had been interviewing me, and that I failed to qualify to be his client. There were several other eyebrow-raising comments, but I have done my best to forget them. Quite an experience, but not one I would care to repeat.
