I had to get injections in Kalispell that morning. I didn't feel quite right the rest of the day. My friend came to my house to check on me because she was worried I was having an allergic reaction to the shot. I was, and by night time she rushed me to the hospital. I was having an angioedema attack, the worst I have had in 25 years.
When we got to SJLH the doors were locked. You go in the first door, pick up the phone and tell them why you are there and they let you in. My tongue was quite swollen so I thought of the first phrase I was sure they would understand. They picked up the phone promptly and I said and quot;Allergic reactionand quot;. Before I could finish saying and quot;allergicand quot;, they had already buzzed me in. David met me as I was coming in and took me to an exam room. He took my medical information and vitals and then went to get the doctor. Dr Maloney came right in to ask about allergies and went to look them up on the computer system that is linked to my doctor. I have quite a few allergies to medicines so instead of trying to confirm everything while my throat started to swell, he simply asked and quot; Can you have Benardyl?and quot; To which I gave him a thumbs up.
They gave me a shot of Benadryl before trying to figure what happened. Once it was under control and my tongue fit in my mouth again, that is when he started asking what happened. I told him the reason why and that I had to get the shots whether I wanted them or not. Work comp said if I didn't they would stop my claim. So I got them because I have bills and kids to feed. He listened to everything I had to say and was concerned about me going home by myself. My friend had come back to the hospital by then (she had to drop off her kids at a sitters) and she called our friend to plan 24 hour care for me after I was released.
He released me with instructions on how much Benadryl and how often, told me to take Zantac if I was still having issues and explained that it is an anti-histamine also (I didn't know that!) and sent me off with my friend. He only released me because I had someone to care for me, which actually, made me feel a lot better. I stayed at my friend's house for 48 hours on Benadryl and sleeping.
When I finally got to go home, I was surprised. The Emergency Room nurse called to check on me and see how I was doing. She answered all my questions and reminded me about the Zantac. I was pretty loopy from Benadryl and had forgotten. She reassured me and told me I could come back in if needed. Luckily, I didn't need to go back.
But I was quite impressed with the care while there and the after care phone call. They were professional, didn't just brush me off and the treatment was quick and exactly what I was expecting should happen (from other ER trips for allergy attacks).
