Lamp Repair reviews in University City

  • One of my beautiful Italian halogen floor lamps just needed a new bulb (which is difficult to install because if its complicated structure).  The other lamp stopped working a few months after I had an expensive repair at another lamp repair place, When I brought it into them, I discovered it was under new management.  The woman refused to honor the previous repair and wanted appoximately $150 to fix it, telling me that halogen lamps are "terrible,"  When I brought both lamps into Nick, he had them fixed the next day.  He charged $10.50 for parts and $25 for labor!  No statements about how terrible halogen lamps are -- he just quietly fixed them!  (I brought in another broken Italian halogen lamp where a screw had broken, and Nick pointed out that it needs a plastic screw, which he did not have.  I'm searching the Internet for one now.)
I'll never go to anyone else to repair my lamps.  He's terrific!

  • He does a very good job! He was very careful  and very accommodating.  If he cant do something, he will find someone else who can complete the job for you. He always clean up after himself and is prompt when he comes. I would recommend him to anyone.

  • It didn't go well. I'm so disgusted. They've scheduled a time with me, they didn't show. When they came to do the service, the guy said that he needed to go get parts so he went to the store. He had a fully stuffed truck. He charged me for the time when he went to the store. He came back after he had spent hours, he said, "The issue was that you had a 100 watt bulb and a 60 watt fixture." So basically, I paid $500.00 to change two bulbs. I was so furious. They wasted my time in the first place and the thing that killed me though was we didn't have 60 watt bulbs in the house so he said, "I will just go to the store and fix them up for you." I was like, "You're not charging me to go to the store again," and then he didn't fix the problem that I called him for. I had two dead fixtures that are 14 feet in the air that I then had to go get a ladder and replace the bulbs myself. I told him to install a fixture in the dining room, which he didn't do. It took him longer than it would have taken me but that's fine and he did do that but the majority of it was time spent that he went to the store and took the can fixture out of the ceiling only to put them back in and he told me that he thinks I had other light bulb. I was trying to work while he was doing all these and I hadn't supervised him very closely and I was like, "You know what, I'm done." And so, I just signed the paperwork and paid him and that was it. It took him about 4 hours to do the whole thing including the trip to the store. I spent time telling him what the problem was upfront so I just assumed they would come with the parts that's why I hired the electrician. They didn't show up on the day and time that they were supposed to in the first place. They called me two hours after they were supposed to be there and said that they will have to come tomorrow. I learned a lot. Now, I'm much more forceful about what it is that I want and how they're going to do the work before they get started so, it was a good learning experience but it was very expensive. He installed the chandelier and that was it.

  • The owner, John Ottwell, told me if I had a problem when I returned home to come back if there were any problems. He also tested the lamps to make sure they were working correctly before I left the store. Both lamps were fixed and I left the store a happy customer.

  • I had searched everywhere to find someone who could repair my light and had been turned away by several businesses who said they couldn't help me. The problem was that my light was an antique and it wasn't a straightforward repair. I finally found A Light Above and e-mailed John a picture of my broken light. He promptly e-mailed me back and indicated that it didn't look like a difficult job and that it would likely cost $50-60 to repair. The next week I arrived at his shop with all the pieces of my fixture in a ziplock bag. When I arrived he was in the middle of what looked like a large and complex job, but he immediately stopped what he was doing and came to assist me. He was very patient in helping me figure out how all the pieces went back together and asked if I could wait 20 minutes while he repaired it. He said that it was better just to do it now, because it was a simple job. I was thrilled. I walked down the street to a bakery, and when I returned, he was finishing up the repair. He said it wasn't as easy as he thought because the sockets were attached with lock-tight bolts (I had no idea what that was, but he explained). When the repair was complete, he had removed the old sockets and lock-tight bolts, and then re-built each arm/candelabra of the light with parts from his shop and put on three new sockets. He then re-assembled the light pieces and re-wired the entire thing. At the end of the day, he charged me $30 - less than he quoted me, and despite the problems he encountered during the repair! He said that he calculated the price based on his hourly rate and based on how long he spent, that was the price. I was incredibly impressed with his honesty and fairness. I was thrilled. It would have cost me hundreds to replace the fixture.

  • I brought it to another place, which I found on Yelp, where the lamp was repaired with no remarks about halogen lighting.
