    Shelton Landscape & Maintenance
All in all, another A+ for Scott Shelton and his crew.  Shelton Landscaping did a huge renovation project (regrading, drainage, boulder wall install, design and install trees, shrubs, plants, beautiful custom patio design and install) for us previously that was also A+.  As always, Scott arrived promptly at the initial appointment and spent considerable time sharing and discussing our ideas and his reactions to them.  Within a week, we had all of the drawings back and were able to "tweak" the final design elements.  Scott's crew showed up promptly on the designated day and worked continuously for two days.  As the retaining wall portion of the project began coming together, we saw that extending the wall and adding slightly to the elevation would be more appealing and meet our design goals (e.g., adding a fence, planning for future tree placements) in a more attractive way.  All of the modifications we requested were done "on the fly" and the project came out perfectly.  We were thrilled with the entire project and continue to receive numerous compliments from neighbors, who walk, by, friends, and family.  A couple of the plants did not survive the transplantation well, and Scott took care of replacing them soon after our request.  Even though we had used Shelton Landscaping before, we still got a second bid for the project as a sort of "benchmark."  Scott's bid was almost 20% lower.  We actually would have used Shelton Landscaping no matter what-we could have just had a price discussion if there had been a huge disparity.  In summary, another great job at a great price.  Our property is exactly what we envisioned when we began planning a couple years ago and if we have any other landscaping needs we will rely on Scott and Shelton Landscaping as our vendor.

The whole process for this project went flawlessly. The team was fast, efficient and did excellent work. The project consisted of installing French Drain around a portion of the house where we had continuing problems with water in the basement after heavy rainstorms. In addition, they removed the turf from an adjacent area and replaced it with small rocks to make a clean, mud-free pet run. Since that time, we've had a dry basement, even after the severe weather we've had this spring (2015). We could not be happier.

    Shelton Landscape & Maintenance
Scott arrived promptly to bid the job.   He was very professional, knowledgeable, and courteous.  He actively
listened to our ideas about the work and the vision we had for the design and the project.  While maintaining our vision, he also made numerous suggestions for alternate approaches and explained the pros and cons of different materials, trees, etc.  We had multiple phone calls, emails, and on-site visits.  Given the scale of the project, Scott also worked out an excellent and systematic plan if we wanted to do the job in phases.  His pricing was very competitive and fair from among the three bids we received.  Communication was excellent-every phone call and email was responded to and any promised alterations in drawings, bids, etc. were clear and consistent with what we had discussed.  When the job began, Scott's crew showed up promptly each day and worked very hard-as did the subcontractors whom he'd selected.  The speed with which the project was completed was amazing and as the project unfolded, some opportunities to improve the original plan developed based on our conversations with Scott.  Any changes that we requested were implemented and pricing adjustments (including credits) were fair and reasonable.  Overall, the job came out wonderfully.  We've received multiple unsolicited comments from neighbors on how great everything looks, and we're already discussing some additional work we'd like Scott to do this fall and spring.  If it were possible to give an "A+" instead of an "A" in the ratings, Shelton Landscaping certainly earned it and it is difficult to imagine ever using another landscaping service or contractor.

    Horstmann Brothers LLC
We contacted Horstmann Brothers for consultation on a bid for an extensive hardscaping/landscaping/fence project.  A Sales Account Manager (Robert E) came to our residence and worked with us for over an hour to establish job parameters.  We had to reschedule the first meeting to a date two days later due to a change in travel plans and Robert was very accommodating.  He arrived promptly for the appointment.  He also seemed very interested, knowledgeable, and shared several good ideas for the project.  We noted we wanted to keep the total scope of work in the $25,000 range.  Robert conveyed that this was "very doable" which was consistent with another bid we had obtained.  He also assured us we would receive the bid and associated drawings "in about a week."  After two weeks passed with no contact, we contacted Robert both via his cell phone and via his office voice mail at Horstmann Brothers.  Another week passed and we contacted Robert both at the office and via a voice mail on his cell phone.  We also reached out the internet Sales Manager whom we had originally contacted and left a message when he was unavailable.  After another week, we made a final attempt to contact Robert on his cell, left another voice mail at his office after communicating to the person answering the phone we were having significant issues contacting him, and another message was left with the internet sales manager.  Another few weeks have passed now and we have had no replies.  Overall, the experience leaves us no option other than giving an "F" grade in terms of Responsiveness, Punctuality, and Professionalism.  In a sense, we are received that we did not end up working with Horstmann since this type of service represents a total disregard for the value of customers time and suggests any issues encountered during a job would be hard to resolve effectively.

    Allen's Tree Service Inc
We called Allen?s Tree Service and had them come out to take
a look at our bushes.  After explaining
to Kevin what we had in mind, he made some suggestions on the type of bushes to
use and the layout and worked up a proposal for us.
They came out as scheduled and started the job.  The crew was very nice and made sure stop and
ask questions as they went along.  They
also made some good suggestions on the project.
We did run into a small problem, they did not have enough of
the keystone blocks to complete the stone wall around the patio.  Their supplier was out of stock on the blocks,
so that delayed the project by one week.
They did return as promised and completed the project the following
week.  I would say that this was not that
big of an issue, but we had taken days off from work to make sure that we were
home during the project and this involved taking an additional day off.
We are very happy with how the project turned out.  We would use Allen?s Tree Service again in
the future.  I think that we will have
them come out in the spring and prune and mulch so that things stay looking

    Finishing Touch Landscape Co LLC
The workers were dropped off and Tom arrived and checked in with them.  Initially, the 3 guys were hanging out and one of the 3 was working.  They got into an argument and I reported them, since they were so slow and then yelling at each other was intolerable.  I reported this behavior to Tom who was very responsive.  He met with the head worker and things improved immediately.  The project did take a couple of days longer than we were told it would, due to the slow pace in the beginning.  The finished product was worth the trouble.  It is beautiful and exceeded our expectations.  My brother was here about a week later and he has a number of related businesses.  He was very impressed with the quality of the work!  In the end, we got a top notch job and the price was significantly lower than the competing bids.  We HIGHLY RECOMMEND THEM.

    S & J's Landscaping LLC
I contacted S&J late summer of 2009. Jerry came out and gave an estimate. Shortly afterward, late August or early September, we met Jerry at warehouse to choose the concrete pavers to be used for the walk. (I believe I also left a deposit with him.) He told us we could expect installation in about 2 weeks. A month went by, and I started a series of phone calls every few weeks. Each time I was able to reach Jerry, I was told it would be soon, another week or two. There had been several days of rain, and Jerry started using that as an excuse, saying his other jobs had been held up because of the rain. In November, I left a message asking Jerry to cancel the job -- not much point in having walk weather the winter, when it was unlikely to be used. A few days later I came home to find the pavers piled up on our driveway, where they sat through the winter. I suppose I could have asked him to take them back, but I didn't. In March or April I called Jerry and asked him to install the pavers. His workers did this in April. The walk was attractive, and it looked like a very good job of installation. In late summer 2010 we noticed that several of the pavers on the edges of the walkway had become unattached. Over the next two months I made at least 15 calls to ask Jerry to come out and look at the problem. In all but about 3 of these calls, nobody answered, and I left a message. When I did get through to Jerry's wife, I was told Jerry would come out on a certain day. I called and reached Jerry perhaps a week later to ask whether he had looked at the walk. Of course he hadn't -- he never got the word from his wife, something like that. Finally, in late September, after much pleading, his wife came out to look at the walk. She agreed it needed work and committed to having it fixed in the next couple of days And, to my shock, the workers came out in the next day or two and -- over the weekend! -- completely removed the walk, redid the foundation, and then reinstalled the walk. I was greatly impressed, until my wife and I noticed that the job had actually not been completed. Several of the small pavers on the edges were simply set down without concrete or even dirt connecting them to the rest of the walk. I left one message (in October), both praising them for doing the job and pointing out that a few pavers were left unconnected. I've gotten no reply, but decided it wasn't worth the aggravation of another phone campaign.

    Hartke Nursery
They are excellent. I went there as a nursery and they did not come here. They have a wide variety of different kinds of plants that and they are unusual and also they are very well organized. I spent about $100. I used them before and they spend a lot of time helping you and giving advice. They are very knowledgeable and customer friendly.

he came twice, first time went fine. he said he would be back to us within a week but it was more like a month after a follow up call. he came back was at my home with my wife alone and said things about her that were unwelcome and totally inappropriate.

Basile Landscaping & Lawn Care LLC
I chose Basile to do my landscaping, because they had so many good ratings in Angie's List. I didn't need to bother checking out other companies. Sara Connolly came to my home (in Oct. '06), talked with me to determine my wishes, and came back a few weeks later with a landscape design. I was pleased with Sara's friendliness, professionalism, and sensitivity. After talking with her and seeing her design, I felt certain I would be pleased with the outcome -- and I am very pleased. Sara's crew came and did the work when and how they were supposed to. I didn't like the way one area looked, and they changed that right away. Everything else was just as Sara said it would be in terms of the layout. I had to wait until April ('07) to see the plants start coming up, and in April, I was pleased once again. We had a cold snap that damaged some of the plants, and Sara said she'd replace whatever was affected at no charge. I have no doubt that she will.
