ALorenzo Hernandez MasonryAnd so, I went to Angie's List and found Lorenzo Hernandez Masonry. I chose him because his Grandview location is close to my Lee's Summit home and I also chose him, most importantly, because of his "A" Grade with Angies List. Lorenzo returned my call in just a few minutes and within 15-minutes he was on my property and giving me an estimate! WOW! I had a budgeted number in mind as to about what I thought the cost would be and after Lorenzo sized-up the job, his estimate was exactly in-line with what I was thinking. Additionally, I wanted Lorenzo to replace the particle backing board that the brick goes against, with a better grade of plywood and with that additional work, we agreed on the price of $1,200.00. Lorenzo said that he would look for materials later that day and he would be back the next morning around 10am to start work. I need to emphasize that this was not just a matter of Lorenzo buying materials. HE HAD TO FIND BRICK THAT WOULD MATCH THE OTHER EXISTING BRICK ON MY HOME! Not an easy feat if you were to see the unique brick that he had to match but worry not, this was just another step that Lorenzo excelled at! Brick was as good of a match as what I could ever expect, and I am not easy to please either. Lorenzo showed up with a helper at the time he said the next morning and the work commenced. I could see a very organized plan developing as they unloaded the various construction equipment that was going to be needed to do this job. Work continued at a steady pace and I could see great workmanship happening from the time the first bag of brick mortar was being mixed up. A job very well done was wrapped up in the mid-afternoon and then I watched as they loaded up all of their equipment that had been used in this project and next I witnessed them spending at least the next hour doing a very detailed clean-up and sweep. By 4pm, Lorenz and his helper were in their truck and driving away. I couldnt even tell that they had been there because they cleaned-up so well! The only thing that Lorenzo left behind was an example of superb craftmanship with the newly constructed brick column in between my 2 garage doors! I am so pleased and go out to my driveway sometimes just to look at it and marvel that this project was completed so well. Super job and top marks to Lorenzo Hernandez Masonry! He WILL NOT disappoint.- Rodney A.

AHearthMasters IncWe had a new stone fireplace with gas insert installed to replace one removed by a previous owner. We could not be happier with the results. It looks (and heats) even better than expected. Everyone who worked on it was not only extremely knowledgeable and professional, but really enjoyed his job. They made sure every detail was correct. We really liked that they did everything - none of the work was contracted out. For anyone needing masonry work or a gas insert installed/maintained I would highly recommend this company..- Marian W.

FHandyman UnlimitedThe project was a disaster from the beginning. The owner, Dana Vinsonhaler made numerous promises that he did not keep. He started the work weeks after he said he would and it lasted months longer than it should have. We never knew when he was going to be working at the house. He would say he was coming the next day, but not show up at all. Days would go by and no one would show up to work. Even when someone came, it was often on person working alone, and our project was quite large. They made so many mistakes during the process and had to take more time to go back and fix them. As we got into the project and things were not looking good, we started making phone calls and soon after, they stopped answering the calls and never returned our messages. Months after the work was supposed to be done, they finally finished. A few weeks later we realized that the stone patio was done incorrectly because it was already cracking. After another long period of time, we finally convinced him to come back to fix it (probably because we used the word "lawsuit"). He came back a year later, tore up a huge portion of the patio and then cemented the stones back down using a reddish colored grout while the rest of the patio was in a grayish colored grout. It looked horrendous. I'm not sure if he realized how awful it looked, but he didn't bother to come back to finish the last 5x5 section of patio- which now just lays on the dirt with no grout in between, but plenty of weeds. We've called in several landscapers and masonry workers and all agreed that it was installed incorrectly and they would have to take it completely apart to redo it (costing us thousands of dollars). They also said that the stones (which were very expensive) were worthless now because he cemented the bottom of them and there are also clumps of grout that were carelessly dripped on top of them. We have not heard from Vinsonhaler, but we have heard many other neighbors who hired him and had similar complaints.- Tom K.

ABROTHERTON MASONRY
Dan Brotherton was prompt and efficient in telling us exactly what the problem was with our chimney. We knew we had a leak somewhere around the chimney as we get water in our basement when it rains. Brotherton Masonry was referred to us by Larry Vaught Roofing. We didn't bother to get any other bids because we trust Vaught with their referral and we needed to get the job done quickly because of the schedule we had taken on for a new roof. I don't know if we could have gotten the work done less expensively but the cost was worth it for the good job done by Brotherton Masonry. Their crew was efficient and did a nice job.
The chimney looks great and we haven't had any more water in the basement. I would definitely recommend them to anyone I know who needs masonry work done.- KAY S. -
CA GRATE CHIMNEY SWEEPVery disappointed in this service. Multiple missed appointments. No communication before, during, or after missed appointments.
The work they did seems competent, but I have no confidence that the work was done completely or correctly. The company claims that they returned to finish work on the exterior upper chimney but never scheduled a time to do that nor did they notify us that they were here or had been here. It was only when I contacted the company to ask about the status of the work that I was informed that it had been completed without our knowledge.
We did not use the fireplace during the 2014 winter because of the lack of confidence, and we are engaging another chimney service to inspect prior to the 2015 winter.

CPrestige One LandscapingCan't really blame the contractor for this one, it was my fault as much as any ones. I bought a coupon on Angies list for around $50. The guy came out and drew a sketch with some suggested plants and a retaining wall. Could have gotten any local nursery to do the same thing for free.
Watch out for the coupons you buy on Angies list - I buy them very rarely anymore. For example, if you buy a coupon for for "x" amount of dollars for a service (say plumbing) and you don't know how long the job will take or the hourly rate of the contractor, the coupon is basically worthless. The contractor can say the job costs $100.00 rather than his standard fee of $50.00. Like an open checkbook.

AAll Source Chimney Service LLCJob was completed in a timely and professional manner. It was an extensive job, as we have a very tall brick chimney on the outside of our house and our fireplace is a wood stove. They matched our brick exactly, and I can't even tell a repair was done. They cleaned up all the mess completely and were very courteous.

AP & V MasonryThey set a date to do the work, called the day before to confirm, and showed up ready to work. The job was completed in one day. They said an owner would be on site at all times and kept that commitment. They did everything they said they would and at the price quoted. They had me check the work before they left and had no problem when I asked them to redo a few places. The job was completed to my satisfaction and I am pleased. I would use them again. I do recommend, as with any contractor, that you get a written estimate.- Shanna H.
