    Dettmann-Claus Painting
    1. I called Dettman-Claus office on Monday, 8/3/2015, around 11:00am; it went to voicemail, so I left my name, number and a voice message that I was interested in getting an estimate for a painting, repair, and staining job.
    2.   Tom Claus returned my call the same day around 12:15pm, leaving a voice message (I was not at home). He gave me his cell phone number as the best way to each him.
    3.   I called his cell phone around 12:40pm that day; he did not answer, so I again left a voice message.
    4.   Two minutes later (12:42) Tom returned my call. I said, ?Wow, that was fast.? He said he tries to return calls quickly so that he doesn?t get behind. I told him that I understood that he might be with a customer and expected to play phone tag. He said, ?Well, you?re a customer too.?  I was impressed by that attitude.  He said that he usually would get free around 10:00am to make appointments, so we set it up that he would call around 10:00 that week on Wednesday, 8/5.
    5.   Tom did call as scheduled on 8/5. When he said he would be by me in about 15 minutes, I asked if he knew where I was, as he had not asked for my address or directions. I thought perhaps he had caller-ID and already knew my location.  He said, ?You?re just off Ballas, right?? I said, ?No, I am up in Ferguson.?  He then said that there must be some mix ?up. It turned out that he thought I was the wife of another customer of his with the same last name. I said I was not aware that there was anyone with my same last name around that area. I asked the person?s first name, thinking maybe it was a cousin of mine (it wasn?t - it turns out that the unknown person with the same last name lives a just stone?s throw away from good friends of ours!). Since the time before his next appt. would not allow for him to come by me then, Tom said he would have to check his schedule and get back to me.
    6.   I did not hear from him by Friday, 8/7, around 2:00pm, so I called Tom?s cell and left another voice message for him to call me.
    7.   By Monday, 8/10, 11:40am, he had still not returned my call. So I called the office again and spoke with Sandy. She said she would give him the message and that he would call me back.
    8.   It is now Monday, 8/17. He has not returned my call.

If he is not interested in doing my job, or if it is out of his service area, I can understand. However, I would have appreciated the professional courtesy of simply returning my call to let me know, whatever the reason was, that he was not interested.

    UPDATE on 8/19:

I have modified the rating on this review due to the fact that Sandy, from the office of Dettman-Claus, did contact me on Wed., 8/19, after seeing my review, to apologize for the oversight. She assured me that this slip up was not typical of their usual operating procedures. She said she realized that they had dropped the ball this time during their very busy season. I appreciated that she took the time to call to explain and apologize ? I am sure it was not an easy call to make.

I did ask if the company would be willing to come to give me an estimate at this time. She said they could do the estimate but that they were completely booked for the fall and that the work could not be done until spring. I declined, opting to try another provider. She told me to keep them in mind for next spring if I was unable to find someone to do the job now. I would consider that request, as the company provides the services I desire and it has been highly rated by others. I am disappointed that it did not work out better this time.

Again, I can understand that slip ups happen - we are all human - and that a company might be willing to squeeze in a job for a regular customer, but not take on a new one for a small job. It would just have been helpful had Tom simply said that since I was not a regular customer that they were not taking any new customers at this time. I would have understood and would not have tried to contact them again.

    Creative Colour Painting
This was the first time that I used them. It took months for them to get me on the schedule, maybe because of the big deal. I called them in April, and it took them until August to come out. They  painted some of my windows shut, and I had to have them come out and get them open, which they did. They painted the spindle on the front white, instead of yellow and white, but the came and fixed that.

    Dettmann-Claus Painting
Past searches years ago for a painter (without using Angie's list) had been ridiculously difficult. In fact about ten years ago I remember  saying that only about 1 in 5 painters contacted actually showed up to provide a quote.  Little was known about those who responded and decisions had to be made based on gut feel.  This time around I decided to try Angie's list.
I contacted Dettmann-Claus this past spring about painting our house.  I chose them from Angie's list based on their high rating and positive responses.    Tom Claus came out very promptly, I believe within a day or two of my call.  Tom was friendly, professional and very knowledgeable and walked around my exterior with me making suggestions and asking/answering questions regarding prep work.  Within days I received a written quote letter as well as some useful guidelines to consider when selecting a contractor.  He also supplied a list of references.  I gave them the go ahead and provided a 33% retainer in roughly early May 2013.  Given the time of year I anticipated that there would be a bit of a wait before work could begin.  I just wanted to get on his schedule.  Everyone wants to get started in the spring...and this area was getting a lot of rain.  Tom contacted me quickly and provided his best estimate (weather permitting) of when they could begin.  I believe we were anticipating a start at the end of June.  In fact work began around mid June.
Each morning Ken and Alex would arrive promptly before I left for work.  I would step outside and talk to them a bit about how things were going.  Both were great.....very nice guys.  On other days I believe we also had Michael and Brent....also good guys.  Our house required some prep work and there are several areas that are very high and just plain difficult to reach.  It required some creative thinking about how the heck a painter could even reach it.  They did.... without any real problems and there were no bent gutters or dribbled paint.  At the end of each day everything was cleaned up and progess could clearly be seen.  Tom called periodically throughout the week that the job took just to keep me up to date.  That is one of his strengths....keeping the customer informed of progress and outlining upcoming plans as things move along.
All in all the work was complete in about a week.  As I recall I asked after completion about one small area that had been overlooked.  It was then taken care of promptly within a day or so.  I would not hesitate to recommend Dettmann-Claus to anyone.  They did a great job, had great attention to detail and communicated well.  Everyone was very professional and were the kind of guys that you would not even hesitate having them come and go from your home....inside or out.
Our house looks great.  We're very happy with Dettmann-Claus.  I regret taking so long to put this review out on Angie's list, but time has a way of sliding by.  I guess they were more prompt than I was.

Andy's Home and Business Repair Inc
This company is the definition of the small, family-owned business that  makes America a great place.  Andy, his wife, Terri and their team offer quick, reliable, quality home renovations and repairs.  We were on a tight schedule with my parent's house and needed concrete repair work and miscellaneous handyman service work done so we could close the sale.  Andy went out of his way to meet me on my schedule in that I live 25 miles from the house.  They did a great job on the concrete stair repairs, crack filling -- he even offered to color the concrete so that it would closely match the existing surface -- it looks great.  I found them to be exactly
who they said they were -- skilled at their job, professional in their manner and true to their word.  A great job at a fair price.  I'd
definitely use them again.   They even cleaned up the leaves in the front of the house which wasn't part of the bid!

The contract was received in January. Due to adverse weather conditions, work was completed in April. James did an excellent and clean job. He also returned promptly to apply a second coat (where necessary).

    Beckner Painting & Contracting
Initially, Beckner's painter (Kevin) was just going to scrape off loose paint. When it became evident that just scraping wasn't getting enough old paint off, the painter used a sander. Kevin was really good about cleaning up paint chips and helping seal windows to minimize paint dust inside. He used both brush and roller to be sure there was adequate thickness and coverage for all layers of paint. He even washed the windows to be sure he removed paint dust and paint spots! He was careful to protect exterior plants whenever possible. Inside, the floor and all furniture were carefully covered. When he left each day, equipment was carefully put away and everything was left clean. Kevin always showed up promptly, or called if he was going to arrive late. Both Kevin, and his supervisor Rich were always willing to listen to and act on any of our concerns during the job. The house looks great.

Andy's Home and Business Repair Inc
My call was answered promptly. However, the labor estimate for a small paint job was too expensive. The owner stresses high quality of work, but not competitive pricing. The job might have been excellent but the owner is defensive and not receptive to any negative comments.

Took way too long. Lousy, I mean lousy quality of work. And certainly over-priced for what he was hired to do but didn't do.
