    Activity & Recreation Center
    They have a big room of cardio machines, a room of weight machines, a running/walking track in which six and a half laps make a mile. That's all upstairs. They have people who can assist you if you need it, in developing a fitness program. Downstairs, they have a number of basketball courts, a large water recreation area for kids with a big water slide. They have a bunch of meeting rooms you can rent for a meeting, a daycare area and a snack bar. The staff are all knowledgeable of their duties.

    The Meyer Center
    Overall The Meyer Center gets an and quot;Aand quot; for the following reasons:
    * Courteous and responsive staff
    * Friendly front-desk
    * Very clean environment
    * A broad range of fitness equipment including free weights, indoor track, and pools and more!
    * Excellent variety of classes
    * Great hours (I was looking for a fitness center with later weekend hours--they have them!)
    * Membership fee is reasonable for what you get
    This is a great gym for adults who want a pleasant fitness experience w/out a lot of noise or nuisance. I had to move out of the area due to a job promotion, and my biggest regret was having to leave The Meyer Center. I will definitely join again if I find myself in the Springfield area again. Highly recommended!

    The gym is crowded with equipment and gets rearranged weekly. The repetitive music played is Christian rap and is very loud. The work out in the classes targeted many muscle groups and therefore I continued to return despite my dislike of many elements of the experience. However, the lack of knowledge by the leader became increasingly intolerable. I no longer felt safe participating in the classes due to the exercises and speed at which they were performed.
    Anyone with any type of joint injury should be wary of attending this gym as the instructors do not assess appropriateness of exercises.
    Another friend (not on Angies List) attended a couple of personal training sessions until she noted inappropriate exercise instruction being given as well as too much weight and too many reps to be safe - again with no assessment of her abilities or prior injuries.

    Mercy - Fitness Center
    I've been a member of Mercy Fitness Center for a little over a year and primarily use the Walnut Lawn location.
    Positives:
    1. 1) The room where they hold exercise classes is usually empty most evenings and has stability balls, free weights, and other equipment you can use on your own. It's a great room to do stretching after a workout.
    2. 2) Free towels!
    3. 3) They have all of the basic equipment one needs to get a full workout
    4. 4) Clean restrooms and women's locker room
    5. 5) The monthly fee is reasonable and discounts are available
    6. 6) I'm not paying for a lot of amenities that I don't use
    7. 7) There's no initiation fee
    8. 8) Indoor track

    Negatives:
    1) Hours on weekends (The Walnut Lawn location closes at 5:30 on Saturday and 5:00 on Sunday).
    2) Some of the equipment seems dated, but I suppose if they brought in state-of-the art equipment they'd have to raise the fees.
    Overall, I'm happy with this fitness center. The only reason I might start looking at other gyms is that I'd like later hours on weekends

    10/26/13 UPDATE:

    Shortly after I submitted this review, Mercy Fitness made some relatively significant changes. Effective 11/1/13 Mercy Fitness will adopt a Medical Fitness Model which basically means it will focus on individual and or group exercise training for people with, or at risk for, chronic or other health conditions or for those individuals requiring specialized care (such as older adults and people with disabilities). Seniors make up about 60% of the membership at Mercy Fitness.

    I think the individual and corporate membership fees are still very reasonable and most fitness centers do charge an initiation fee. Mercy Fitness will no longer have free towel service, and they will close earlier--at 9:00 p.m.--on weekdays.

    The thing to consider about joining this gym at this point would be whether the Medical Fitness Model fits in with your long-term fitness goals.

    Anytime Fitness
    They are fine. They may be a little limited in their size and availability of certain equipment from time to time. The staff is all very pleasant. It is $40 a month but I get a $10 discount through my employer. I didn't know for several months that I got this discount and they didn't ask so I paid $40 for several months. They failed to explain their pricing structure. They are always open. The staff is friendly, they are fine.

    Wilson's Fitness Center
    My wife likes this gym so I thought I would give it a try. They offer a free week or two to try it out before you sign up. I thought the facility itself was nothing too remarkable but they had most things you would expect a gym to have. The locker rooms were very clean and maintained with a relaxed atmosphere. The gym itself was fairly small compared to some public gyms here in town, but that's not a deal breaker. If you're looking for standard gym with basic cardio machines and weight training, Wilson's would be a reasonable option, but I like a more comprehensive gym where there's an actual track instead of a treadmill or a pool or basketball court.

    The ARC has large locker rooms. Bring your own lock! (I wouldn't leave my stuff unlocked.) They have plenty of cardio and weight equipment. I only find that I have to scrounge for a machine if I go at the busiest times of the day, but the indoor track is always an option when the floor is too full. People are very good about rotating out on weight machines, and the free weights are almost never in use. There's mats for stretching afterwards. If you are going to swim, bring towels. They have showers in the locker room, and "lap/walk" times when kids are not in the pool if you want quiet. There's plenty of parking, and the location is easy to get to.

    Not all personal trainers are created equal. The most highly trained and successful trainers have always been passionate about their own health and have been able to help others with the same passion enabling them to become highly effective. Most get degrees in sports physiology then continue further with certifications very few personal trainers can match. This superior knowledge allows the person seeking a safe and effective training session the peace of mind knowing they are truly in professional hands. Mason Stevens is one of the nicest people you will ever meet. He also happens to be described above and for the last two years has helped me achieve many personal fitness goals. When Mason ask me what I was looking for in a training program I said I wanted to strengthen my tennis game, and in doing so, also increase overall fitness. I have found it amazing how he has, using some of the most interesting exercises, made all those movements I use on the court much easier and more effective. Its been a long time since I've been in this kind of shape.I do want to mention that Mason for many years worked in Cardiac Rehabilitation at a local hospital helping those with unigue fitness requirements a safe and effective road to recovery. Many of Mason's clients are 50 years plus in age and we require someone who we can trust will not push us into dangerous situations. Anyone looking for the finest in personal training would not be disappointed in Mason Stevens.

    Mason Stevens became my trainer two years ago. I had been plagued with some health issues and an injury which led me into being in very poor shape. I was nervous and frankly embarrassed to start with a trainer but new I needed professional help and some accountability to get me motivated. Mason is certified and has extensive experience in anatomy, exercise physiology and also works in cardiac rehab so I felt very comfortable that he would help with my long standing shoulder injury and do it in a safe, appropriate manner.Over the two years I have gained a considerable amount of strength as well as being relieved of my shoulder troubles. He changes my routine every time to make it challenging and interesting. It is very hard work, but he knows how much I can take. I certainly work out much harder with him than I would on my own! He is supportive and motivating. I feel very fortunate to have become one of Mason's clients.

    Womens Wellness Center
    I've been to Women's Wellness Center several times and seen quite a few of the providers. I see Dr Wisdom for my primary care. She always takes the time to listen to everything I have to say and addresses all of my concerns. I'm also seeing Tori Summers who is a health coach. She's helping me get more on track with my nutrition and fitness. She's awesome as well!! Unbelievably, I see a third specialty there - Dr McCoy. He's the "bladder specialist". So he and Yvonne have been working with me to help with incontinence issues (you know how sometimes you worry about sneezing when your bladder is full?). Anyway, after the kids I've had some issues there and am way too young to have to worry about it, so they're getting me fixed up. I'm on my way to being more healthy and feeling great and confident. It's an awesome place to go. Great doctors and staff and spa environment to boot!
