Deck Building reviews in Columbia

I contracted with Red on May 8 to work on my deck. I gave him a deposit of $2144. He indicated he would be able to begin in two weeks. After a month I contacted him again and he told me he would start the following week. He did not. I contacted him several more times and he would give me a firm starting time, but he would never show up or call. On July 13 I emailed him and asked for my deposit back. He finally agreed to do so. After two weeks without a refund, I filed against him in small claims court. I emailed him again and told him that he had until August 3 to return my money or I would write about my experiences with him on Angies List and this is that review.

I have to say, the conditions for building our deck, or just working outside in general, were awful. It rained for 7 consecutive days, and those guys worked straight through it. I was/am so impressed. We ended up with a beautiful deck, and we couldn't be happier. There was one mistake, that caused some rain to leak in to the house, but when I contacted Barry Rowe on a Saturday evening, he responded immediately and had a man out the next day (SUNDAY!) to fix it. I can not say enough how great it is to have timely replies from the owner of the business. He also went through and inspected the work that was done, and then had his crew come back out to fix the things he didn't find acceptable. We will definitely use them again.

So, it should be clarified that our deck had to be rebuilt twice by this company.  After the first completion, we were extremely happy about the solidity of the new structure and the workman's initiative shown in making small improvements to the overall structure to provide enhance durability and longevity: bolstering the perimeter beams with an extra header joist and the addition of flashing where the deck came into contact to the side of the house as he noticed it was missing from original construction.  Admittedly though there were a few aesthetic details (a few screws that need to be angled better, the sanding of some splintered wood, and the replacement of a board which had a rather larger knot that had already begun to collect water after a rain) that I brought to the attention of the team who displayed prompt responsiveness in the correction of these items.

However, approximately 2 weeks after final completion, during an on-site evaluation performed by the owner of the company, it was noticed that much of the wood, both the cedar-tone deck boards and the railing supports were splitting, and one of the 2 x 4 bottom boards that supported a row of spindles was warping. He took multiple pictures, and went off to discuss this with his team and to talk to his lumber supplier.  He discovered that other wood sold from the same batch had been receiving similar complaints, so the vendor replaced the wood, at which point Precision made a decision to re-do our entire deck at no cost to us.  The team went above and beyond what one would normally expect from a "return" or "replacement" of product.  The structural rail posts were replaced with pure cedar for extra strength instead of the cedar-toned ones. The team re-evaluated the design of the railing system and decided to put in a cleaner more modern product that they had just started to offer their customers, eliminating the need for top and bottom wooden 2 x 4s (and therefore the need to treat and stain said wood!). Also, the stairwell (approx 20 steps) was tidied up much better, fitted with risers, widening the walking space through the elimination of the inner handrail, but instead closing off the remaining gap normally created there by boarding it up with vertical deck boards.  The many small touches (the beveling and rounding of the wood on corners and edges) has really elevated our deck and are testament to the abilities and attentiveness of the Precision team.

So, despite us having to get our deck rebuilt twice, we are extremely happy with the final product, the continual customer service that this company strives to provide.  While the deck is finished and awaiting the drying time period before we stain and seal it, we have been invited to call the team back to come out and inspect the condition again for further product control. This is the type of commitment that one does not often find these days.

Worst job ever. Horrible company and ignorant owner. We called in July to get back on the schedule after paying $200 and he just kept pushing us to the end of the week then to next week then the end of that week and so on.

It was fine.  I thought they did a good job overall.  The deck was fabulous.  The details.  They missed some of the details and I just ended up finishing out myself because I got tired of the emails trying to get them to finish up the details.  The price was the best out of three estimates.  They came out when they said they would.

Erskine is terrific. He comes when he says he will. Does nice work, and cleans up afterward. Good communication. Fair prices with no surprises. Finds creative solutions to tough problems. Highly recommended. Would hire again, and will.

Aaron was extremely professional and meticulous in replacing the deck on our house.  I had several changes I wanted to make to the design for safety, functionality and appearance.  Aaron listened to my input and made some excellent suggestions as well.  My wife and I couldn't be happier with the finished product. The price we paid was right in the middle of the range that I had anticipated for the project. We were so happy with the deck that we also hired him to replace the siding and windows on our house, and paint several interior rooms.  All the work has been done to our satisfaction and at what I believe to be a fair price. I will use Aaron again.

Gary Naugle Construction did a first rate job from start to finish. One of the partners, David B., was the person who did the estimate. Then, when it came time to do the job, David came the day before the work was to be started and put up plywood sheeting to protect my gutters and shrubs. And the owner, Gary Naugle, also came a day or two before the work was to be done to make sure everything was in order.
David or one of the other partners was on-site pretty much the whole time the work was being done and he came the day after the work was completed to fix a couple of minor things (a capmaster that he had identified the day before as being loose and a shingle I noticed was broken). Gary Naugle also came by the day after the work was done to make sure everything was done properly.
The roofers themselves were efficient and very professional and they appear to have done an excellent job.
All in all, Gary Naugle Construction met and even exceeded my very high expectations for this this job. I am extremely pleased with the work they did and I will definitely use them again for other work. Highly recommended!

We had a great experience with Lucas Hyde. He was very prompt in setting up an appointment to visit with us about our deck. He created a very unique plan to take advantage of the current deck's original design. We wanted a small pergola to shade the deck and Lucas created one that was triangular and didn't involve any posts on the deck itself. He offered us a number of alternatives for wood and for the railings. He removed the old deck flooring, railings, and stairway. He re-used some of the materials to help save money. Our new deck floor has no seams, no screw heads showing, and is incredibly smooth. It is so nice to walk on in our bare feet. Lucas was very professional in all of the work. There were no surprises or unexpected costs. After the construction was completed, we noticed that a small section of one of the railings was slightly bowed. Lucas immediately replaced the section. He cleaned up all of the construction debris. We would definitely recommend Lucas for home remodeling and construction.

I have a rather long, wide gravel driveway and at nearly 66, it's becoming just too much for me to shovel myself out. I did after our first snow in December, and it took me 2 days! I used the Can Do Crew last winter, so I emailed over New Years and asked to be put back on their list - they automatically come by if we've had a certain amount of snow (3"?); I'm not quite sure how much. The young lady called back on Jan 2nd and apologized for not getting in touch sooner to see if I wanted to be on their list again. They've actually plowed my drive twice since Christmas and it's well worth the $40 to have them take care of it in less than 15 minutes when it takes me 2 days! I'm still working, so it's important that I am able to get out on weekdays expecially. On Jan 6th, the truck was there by 6:45am!
The only downside is that, since my driveway is gravel, I now have mounds of gravel piled on the edges of the lawn and will have to get out with a rake and shovel to move it back once the weather warms up. I may call and see how much they'd charge to do that for me, too.
