Deck Building reviews in Clayton

Real People ~ Real Reviews ~ Real Results

  • The owner was nice. However, it took from June until the end of October to get the project done, when we were told it would be much faster than that. Once the project was underway, several corrections had to be made due to significant changes being made without first consulting us.

  • Al Birkenmeier had previously done work for me so I was confident everything would go smoothly. I was not disappointed. Al is a perfectionist and the finished product shows it. He keeps the homeowner updated on progress and schedules. He has very high standards and goes beyond the call of duty to make sure everything is done professionally whether by him or his subs.

  • While California Custom Decks may be a bit more expensive than other deck builders - believe me it is more than worth it!  We have an older home with a converted garage -- this makes for a strange layout onto a concrete patio -- 4 stairs to the back kitchen door and two to the bedroom door.  We wanted something that would allow for a better flow and make things seem a bit more connected.  This was a project that needed experts.  From start to finish the CCD team was a joy to work with - the showroom really assists with picking the perfect product, which was nice.  The design team offered suggestions that we hadn't thought about (size of treads, etc.).  Also, the owners were extremely responsive via email and phone to answer questions.  We also had a privacy wall constructed next to our spa -- although we had the product selected, CCD noted that another product - same color - would be more stable for the freestanding wall, and took the time to show us the samples and why, due to stability, the product was going to be a better option.  And it was less expensive than what we originally selected!  So we added stair lights to make the cost a wash.
We couldn't be happier and recommend CCD without any reservation!

  • I first met with their salesman Keith who went over everything in great detail and worked with us on pricing to both of our satisfactions, construction started a couple of months later.  The crew (which was the same throughout) were professional, clean and worked with me with questions and small modifications to the design.  The overall result was a screened in porch and deck that was far beyond our expectations.  It wasn't necessarily the cheapest, but we had hotter a few other bids and this was definitely in line with the others.  The quality of work and the detail in craftsmanship was great.  Such nice people to work with.  I thought that we were considering some general contractors to do some work on our house including the deck, and I was so happy we decided to go with Chesterfield Sunrooms to do this as that is what they do.  The crew were obviously trained well and just knocked out the project in no time.  I would recommend Chesterfield Sunroom any time.  By the way, I used them a few years back to fix my fence and they did a great job on that also.

  • He was very prompt in coming out and prompt in giving his bid. He was a lower priced guy so I liked that. He was very professional and really seemed like he was going to be careful not to do more work than what's required. He was very experienced and very knowledgeable, and I liked him quite a bit. I think anybody could have done the other repairs but stabilizing it for a column was going to be really hard to do, and I think we had decided just to tear it down rather than deal with it. When Stan Mauk got here, he said no. He said he thought we can use manpower to kind of shift it back into place, which never occurred to me. They didn't do it all the way exactly, but it's a lot better than what it was. I just appreciated Stan. He was like a John Wayne character. He was more convincing or competent.

  • He was very prompt, responsive, and professional but he was always the highest bid and he is not really that creative at problem solving. He is just kind of cut-and-dried. I had some challenges on this old house and so I just thought for that price, it was too high.

  • He’s great at solving problems. He’s trying to do the minimal amount work possible to achieve the results. He saved me a lot of money by doing repairs rather than rebuilding. He just seemed to be really knowledgeable and very experienced. He has big crew that could do heavy work for homes. All his crewmembers were very nice, polite and professional. He is just great. They showed up on time but he never really knew when he was coming. He wouldn’t call to let me know so that was aggravating.

  • Fine at first -- Chris came by to look at our pool deck June 10th (a Tuesday) and was very friendly and professional. I told him we were putting our house on the market and wanted the work done as soon as possible. Two other concrete companies told me they did not do this kind of repair, so I was counting on this company. Chris said his boss would get back to me with the estimate, but he thought maybe the boss would be going on vacation that weekend. I called again a couple weeks later and left a message that we still needed an estimate. I still have not gotten an estimate from them (it's July 22). Fortunately, I did find another company to do the work.

  • After losing a large tree in the backyard, we decided that we wanted a pergola over part of our paver patio for shade. We contacted several companies and finally selected Outdoor Living. After much consideration, we decided to go with vinyl over cedar or treated due to the much lower maintenance. The sales process was straightforward, with no pressure. The salesperson, Dave, was knowledgeable and responsive, in spite of some family health issues, and was good to work with.

We put 1/3 down to get on the schedule. It was somewhat open-ended on the date, but construction started within about 6 weeks, which was not an issue. It took part of a day to dig the footings, then waited for inspection the following day. Took two more days to do the installation. The crews were professional and easy to have around.

We are very happy with our pergola and the entire experience working with Outdoor Living. We were a bit antsy waiting to get the installation scheduled, but the process was just as described prior to signing the contract. We are happy to recommend OLI for consideration to anyone in the area considering a similar project.

  • The project went well and everything turned out great. Their price is reasonable and they do good work. The owner Shawn is a very nice and reasonable guy and if something is wrong he will fix it.
