The Rescue Shelter in question is called S.A.D Rescue or Save A Dog rescue in Cadet, Missouri. Recently we bought a miniature Schnauzer from this rescue on the 9th of November. We picked up the pup and took him directly to our Vet. Our Vet basically just looked the pup over and said he looked fine. Our Vet gave him a dewormer and flea meds and we went home. Later that evening Cooper, as we named him that, started vomiting and wouldn't eat or drink anything. By Sunday he hadn't eaten or drank anything. So we called the emergency vet on call and got cooper over there as fast as we could. The Vet did all of the test on him that he could do and we found out that cooper had Parvo plus he also had tape worms. Cooper was at the vet for 5 days. We spent $592.00 dollar's to get him fixed on top of the $500 Dollar's that we spent to pay for cooper. All told, we were out almost $1,100.00
During the time Cooper was at the Vet we contacted S.A.D Rescue. We basically asked for our adoption fee back. The lady just wanted to give us half of what we paid for the Vet bill because she told us that she could have gotten the treatment done cheaper at her vet. The problem with that is that this rescue is two hours from where we live. To take cooper off of the meds he was on and the IV's would have most certainly killed him. I should mention here that cooper had 3 other siblings who also had Parvo and Tape worms. According to the lady 2 died and the other survived, not really sure about the one that survived. However, knowing that the other two pups died in their care was a red flag anyway.
My girlfriend spoke to this lady numerous times but the lady did not want to be fair about the deal gone south and only offer to pay for half of the Vet bill. When I spoke to the lady she did everything she could to keep me from speaking on the phone. She interrupted everything I had to say. She then said she has a contract and that I should go ahead and take her to court. This is true, there is contract that we signed that releases them from any responsibility for the care of the dog and bills we incur because of the dog are our responsibility. I cannot argue that one bit, however, the question here is now this: Does a rescue not have the responsibility to test the animals they have for any diseases they may have contracted. Are they allowed to find homes for these animals with out first making sure these animals are ready to be adopted. This is something I don't know. I would caution anyone who would adopt from this shelter. If one decides to adopt from this shelter, then please make sure that all of the tests have been done to ensure the animal has not contracted any diseases whatsoever and that it has not contracted worms. Make sure to get this information in writing. You do not want a high vet bill because the shelter didn't do what it was supposed too.
