    DAN MILBOURN CONSTRUCTION
The bid by Milbourn was not the lowest. However, their explanation and detail descriptions of what they will do was excellent. Thats why they were chosen. The work was done as expected. We need to give it about 6 months to find out if their repairs did the trick, but Im betting they did.

    MCC Cleaning & Restoration
Ran a rotating brush connected to a cordless drill up chimney from inside. Vacuumed out the fireplace, but didn't clean anything he knocked down that would have been on the smoke box/shelf. Inspection consisted of looking up the chimney using a light on a phone. Never looked at the chimney outside until he was leaving and I asked. He glanced up at it and said it looked fine. In and out in less than 20 minutes. Did not provide written inspection report as listed either. Not impressed.

    J & J Masonry Restoration & Chimney Repair
Had to have our chimney repaired as bricks were falling off due to poor mortar by original builder. J&J Masonry provided the most affordable bid. But it wasn't the price that made it a great experience. It was the friendly, professional and collaborative team of men that completed the work...On time, On budget!! They know what they are doing. They take pride in their work. They want to do a great job. And they did!! We would highly recommend J&J Masonry. Katie & Jerry D.

    ENGLISH SWEEP
Cleaning comprised of just reaching up arms length from the hearth and brushing by a small handheld brush & vacuuming a bit afterward. None of the tools and circular brushes wheeled-in were utilized. Thereafter, a trip to the roof for inspection confirmed 16-yr knowledge of ill fitting chimney top. Measurements & pics were taken and informed I would be contacted regarding finding proper top. (Shouldn't be that difficult as the neighborhood has 498 homes w same exact chimney inserts.) Never heard back. $200 for WDing a handle & reaching up & brushing around/vacuuming a bit. Not very friendly either.

    ENGLISH SWEEP
I was very pleased with English Sweep from calling to schedule the appointment to Russ coming out and performing the service. I was well informed thru the whole process from what to expect, when to expect a call, arrival time, a run down of what was going to be done, and a follow up discussion regarding what the cleaning uncovered. Russ was very polite, considerate, and verbose in his description of the task. He took photos with an iPad to have record of the condition of my fireplace, chimney, roof exhaust, etc., and used a camera to view the inside of the flue to make sure there was no structural damage hidden in the chimney. He shared the photos with me explaining what he found. Overall I am very satisfied with the service and will definitely call them back when it's time for the next cleaning.

    ENGLISH SWEEP
English Sweep performed an inspection ($225) and recommended that we replace the cap on the top of our chimney. The worker showed us pictures of the old cap and where he thought water was getting in. His explanation sounded reasonable, so we scheduled the repair. Two weeks later, the work was done (another $250). We were pleased with the service until the next rainstorm, when the dripping in the chimney was louder than before. We called English Sweep back, but the worker who performed the repair swore that the job was done correctly. The company sent us "after" photos of the repair and suggested we contact a roofer. So we spent $575 for a repair to fix a leak, AND OUR CHIMNEY STILL LEAKS!!!!! In the "after" photos the company sent us, there are obvious gaps around the chimney that look like they could let water in. How were these missed in the first inspection? We were told ONLY about the chimney cap. It seems like a layer of caulk could fix the gaps. Why was this simple repair NOT suggested in the original inspection? Why was the focus on replacing the chimney cap instead of sealing the gaps? I feel that the company recommended a more expensive repair than might have been necessary. We should have been given an option to either only replace the cap, only seal the gaps, or do both. If the gaps were missed, then the company provided both a poor diagnostic service and an unneeded repair. I have included two of the "after" photos.

    RLR Masonry Inc.
Price quote was below competition. At completion the price quoted was my cost. Had to call to learn when the work was scheduled. The work was done as scheduled (sealer has not yet been applied. Scheduled for 2-3 week after tuck-point work is completed, depending on weather.) Clean-up was well done. Professional and easy to work with. Quality appears to be good as the loose and missing concrete and cap were replaced . . . time is key and there has been insufficient time to properly assess quality.

    Paul Marcus Painting Co.
Finding a painter who seemed to know and understand the fireplace whitewashing process was not easy. No one on Angie?s List who I contacted inspired my confidence because none of them mentioned cleaning the brick before they began painting. Paul described in detail how the job would be accomplished, beginning with draping and taping to protect my home. He discussed the nature of the brick surfaces he would be working with and went into some detail with me about what specifically I wanted the finished product to look like.

He was by no means the least expensive bid, but we had one shot to get the whitewashing right and he made me feel confident that he knew what he was doing.

We set a date to begin what he said would take 3 to 5 days depending upon how things went. Because another job he was working on took twice as long as the contractor he was working for had told him it would take, he asked to delay his start by one week and offered to add a service without charge if there was something else he could do for us.

Once they came in and got started, they were as professional and focused as I could have hoped for. Paul?s employee, David, was very hard-working and no-nonsense. They finished the work in 2 ½ days and I am more pleased than I can express. Paul conferred with me every step of the way to ensure they were getting the look I wanted and it?s just beautiful. Photos are attached.

    Galati & Sons Tuckpointing
I contacted Galati and Sons when my chimney leaked and stained my ceiling in the family room.  They were prompt in responding and came when I wasn't at home to do the estimate.  (I appreciated not having to be home because it was a particularly busy time for me and I didn't want to spend a day waiting.)  I was called with the estimate, and we scheduled the work.  The crew arrived on time and the only thing I had to do for them was plug in an extension cord.  They were courteous and cleaned up after themselves. The office staff was great and answered all my questions, and sent me an invoice marked paid for my records.

I would recommend them without reservation. They are truly professional and make having work like this done stress free.

    Ashes Away
Ashes Away was provided excellent service.  They called ahead to ask if they could be early and they were.  They explained everything they were going to do.  The price was reasonable.  Ashes Away uses a system that pulls the dust up the chimney and blows it out so there was very little noise and no dust in the house.   I will use them again.
