    CenterPoint Energy Home Service Plus
The furnace is 30 years old so we like to have a maintenance checkup done to make sure everything is in working order. The guy checked our hot water heater and we found out it was putting out way to much carbon monoxide out the vent. So he flagged it and we put in a new one. It was 10 years old. Had he not found that it might have not ended well.

The technician performed a few tests, confirmed that the boiler ran, and did some checking to be sure water was circulating around the baseboard pipes in both zones. I paid the technician for his 1.5 hours labor and assurances that my boiler system only needed a minor update but would otherwise be in good shape for the whole winter. That said, it turns out the technician offered incorrect advice about a thermostat and connected zone valve which cost me money for unnecessary replacements. The technician also failed to notice and/or mention a severely corroded float valve and expansion tank which failed not a week later (picture attached). After testing the boiler's drain valve it didn't stop dribbling, but the technician failed to note this. I received an invoice two weeks later which was mailed to the wrong address, and which incorrectly indicated that I still had a balance due. I sent an email documenting all of these problems to Comfort Systems Inc's management, including pictures of the corroded and failing equipment. I received a short reply from Chris apologizing for the invoicing problem, but he didn't acknowledge the other issues or offer any concession for my unnecessary costs and preventable emergency. Perhaps it was my mistake for not making clear that I wanted more than a scant few words of apology, but this further inattention to detail has ensured that I'll look elsewhere for future HVAC needs.

Mr. Rooter Plumbing of South Central Mississippi
They sent a plumber immediately in response to my call, and I was impressed. I had moved into a house that had long been vacant, and after using the sinks and shower for a few days, the drains had ceased to function and I had standing water.
The plumber that they sent me was pleasant and seemed honest. He provided some options, and I chose to have him come back and clean my drains using their hydroscrub method ($670 for both kitchen and bathroom sinks). I had to wait a few days for service, however.  When he came back and started the treatment, he soon found that he couldn't get the snake all the way down the system, so he aborted and went down to the crawl space to see if there might be further issues.
The plumber diagnosed the problem as too-narrow and misconfigured pipes. I couldn't complain, since he didn't charge me for the failed attempt to clean the pipes with the hose, but this meant further delay, and the job would now involve replacing pipes and would cost $2500. I purchased a Mr. Rooter advantage membership for $100, to bring down the cost ($2900-$2500), and I purchased a drain cleaning product that the plumber talked up, for $50. I almost had Mr. Rooter do the work, since I was desperate and I knew that other plumbers in the area were busy and scheduled out pretty far, but luckily, I got someone else out to provide and assessment, and he let me know that the $2500 price tag on the job was excessive.
Thus, I hired Dan's Plumbing to come out and charge by the hour, rather than charging by the job, as Mr. Rooter does. It ended up being about $900, and Dan is someone I'll use in the future--really impressed with his experience and his honesty.
The lesson is, don't pay Mr. Rooter to do any work on your plumbing except for the drain cleaning that they specialize in, and hopefully that will work better in your situation than it did in mine. Most people probably already know this, but I almost learned the hard way. In addition to the high price, I didn't really enjoy working with this company. I'd rather call up an individual plumber than go through a scheduler. And I definitely don't like the gimmicky salesmanship and the system of requiring customers to become members to get better pricing.

    Dan's Plumbing, LLC
Dan doesn't do a lot of self-promotion, but he's a trustworthy and experienced plumber and a really pleasant person to work with. Since my plumbing needs involved getting the drains functioning, I initially called Mr. Rooter. Then, it turned out that pipes needed to be replaced--cleaning the pipes was not enough. Dan was able to do the necessary work for one third of what Mr. Rooter would have charged. He was professional and pleasant. He spent many hours at my house, mostly in my awful crawl space, and so I was amazed at the reasonable cost.

    Spear Plumbing and Heating
Our water heater developed a leak. Spear Plumbing and heating was the contractor currently being used by Center Point energy. The installer called and made an appointment for the next morning. (The leak was bothersome but not an emergency). He showed up on time, was very knowledgeable and professional, was neat, and very quick. He had us up and running in 2 hours. As per the deal he drained and removed the old tank, used copper pipe in replacement areas, and brought the installation up to code which it hadn't been. When he was finished he went over everything. He showed me what he had done to be sure we'd pass the city inspection, he went over the features of the tank, and explained the electronic thermostat and maintenance procedures tat I will perform. Overall the guy rated a perfect 10! Before any craftsman comes to your home, particularly the basement, be sure that the way is clear. He needs to be able to navigate your steps and needs room to work on the water heater, furnace, etc. also, a lesson I learned along the way is that although the guy may like company at the bar he prefers to work without you looking over his shoulder.

    Schwickert's a Tecta America Co
Over the past eight years, Schwickerts has installed various plumbing fixtures in kitchen and bath, re-worked our old radiator system, and installed our central air conditioning unit. In each case, they always arrived on time and treated my home as if it were their own. They clean up afterwards, which I really appreciate. They have good follow-up policies and reminders for maintenance. I have been very happy with their work over the past eight years.

    Ed's Plumbing
Ed was referred to us by a plumber that we had used for many years who has retired. He completed all of the work we had contracted within the plumbing budget that we established. He was always on site at the time that he scheduled to be here. The quality of work was excellent and fit perfectly with the new appliances. He has a very professional demeanor. He cleaned up thoroughly each day. Additionally, he responded to phone calls quickly and was flexible when he needed to be in order to accommodate other contractors and worked well with them when needed. We will recommend Ed's Plumbing to others without hesitation.

    Ed's Plumbing
He came in to install a new sink that was deeper than our old one. So he had to move a lot of the pipes around. Got everything up and running in just under two hours.
