He was happy to come out and provide a quote. Friendly enough. Fairly prompt about starting the job. Very happy accept full payment, promising to return to finish the job. Then, radio silence despite many attempts to call and e-mail. So now going into winter, I have a mostly installed exterior door I need to figure out how to seal up. Very frustrated with the result.

Work that was originally said to take no more than 4 months, took a year. At times, weeks would go by with no work done and no explanation. Furnace exhaust pipes were covered by boards on new deck and the pipes iced up causing our furnace to shut off when it was extremely cold--this happened 3 times in January 2011 before they "fixed" the issue. Then it happened again this January and we paid a professional to come take a look and it turned out they had extended the wrong pipe.
When their sub contracted electricians were installing the new electrical, they cut power to our existing sump pump, which wasn't discovered until we had some heavy rains and our basement flooded because the sump pump wasn't functioning. We had a terrible time working with the electrical company's insurance company and RSM Designs was no help.
After we had paid our final payment, it was discovered that RSM had installed combustible materials too close to the gas fireplace heat source (in new addition that RSM built). We tried to get them to work with the fireplace contractor on correcting the problem, but the fireplace contractor was never able to reach Rick with RSM when he called and Rick refused to give out his cell number, even though he is rarely in the office. After weeks went by, we went ahead and just had the fireplace contractor do the corrective work, which we paid for, plus we had to pay for and install new tile surround beause the old tile could not be reused after being torn out to perform the corrective work.

Rick Miner and RSM Designs lied and misled us about time lines and deadlines involved, including telling us at the beginning that the dumpster in our driveway, by ordinance, could only be there a few days at a time. We had dumpsters on 2 different occasions and both times they were there much longer than that (they even remained when they were full). The 2nd time, the dumpster remained in our driveway for well over a month, which damaged our driveway. Also, Rick from RSM told us (and this was also on their website) that they used their own employees and not sub contractors for everything except plumbing and electrical. This was an outright lie. All work was done by sub contractors, including most of the carpentry and construction work. The only non sub work was the work done by Rick and his son, which was a pretty small fraction of the total project.

The entire process of working with Rick Miner and RSM Designs was frustrating and upsetting. Rick did not return phone calls and was very slow in returning many of the emails we sent. He would not give out his cell phone number, so our only option was to call the office, but he was rarely there, and we'd have to wait days to hear back from him, but that was only after repeated messages were left with his receptionist asking that he call. At one time, we tried to get a response to phone calls and emails all week. That Friday, I tried to reach him several times and his receptionist wasn't sure when he would get back to me. I finally said if I didn't hear from him within 2 hours, I was going to file a report with the Better Business Bureau. He called me back within 5 minutes.

We eventually did file a complaint with the BBB regarding the issue with the fireplace, simply asking that we be reimbursed for the additional work that had to be done in order for us to be able to use the fireplace. He did not do anything to resolve the complaint and the BBB eventually closed it as an unresolved complaint and it will stay on his BBB listing for 3 years.

We highly recommend people not do business with RSM Designs. They do not operate in a professional manner in any sense of the word. It was an awful experience.

We used Schwarz Construction twice for home improvement projects.  The first was summer of 2010.  We wanted to put siding on the outside of our house and do some new landscaping.  We contacted Dave Schwarz for some ideas and an estimate.  He proposed much more than we could think of- a front porch, stone and great decorative touches to the outside. We loved the ideas and considered the cost very reasonable.  After selecting the materials we wanted, Dave and his crew started work - removing trees, sod and plants.  Soon siding was off, and work began. The workmanship of his crew was outstanding.  Dave also added some custom built additions to our project.  We did run into some rainy weather that slowed the project down, but it was finished in a timely manner.  We are extremely happy with the new "face" of our house.
Another change that was made was a new concrete driveway.  The old one was removed and a new, bigger driveway was added.
After the outside was done, we needed new landscaping.  Mary Schwarz designed a plan, which I liked.  We went shopping and  selected plants.  Mary planted them herself.  The landscaping, new driveway and new outside of our house makes it look like it was just built.

The second project was in October of 2011.  It was a room remodel, re-insulating, patio door replacement and updated lighting.  Again, the ideas he proposed were great and the cost reasonable.  We needed to re-sheetrock a room, new ceiling and lighting, and a closet.  The work was done professionally and in a timely manner.  The new room looks great.  We also had to replace a patio door.  We talked to him about putting it in, and he had it in the next day.

Dave was accessible when we needed to sit down with him and discuss progress and updates on the work.

We highly recommend Schwarz Construction for anyone needing building or remodeling projects.

The project went well. He was organized and easy to work with. He responded quickly to all calls. The project was finished on time and within the budget.
