Concrete Driveway Installation reviews in Oakdale

Real People ~ Real Reviews ~ Real Results

  • I was there watching for the entire job.  John was able to get the job done a few days earlier than scheduled.  The weather was with us.  Excellent crew.  Friendly, competent, skilled, and very hard working.  Knew what they were doing.  The digging out of the wet clay area was not in the original contract, but the extra cost billed was very reasonable.   The finish work  was done with care and an artist's touch.  The broom finish and saw cut expansion joints look great.  I decided to keep the driveway wet for 28 days - by covering it with burlap held down by 20 2x4s.  I watered it several times a day to keep the burlap wet.  At night when I woke, I would turn on a sprinkler for half an hour.  Concrete reaches 75% strength in 7 days and 100% in 28.  By keeping the surface covered and wet it was able to cure evenly.  A MN DOT engineer lives down the street and stopped to complement me for doing it right by covering it with burlap and keeping it wet.  The state can only get by with 7 days and 75% strength.  I bought the burlap in 5 x 60 foot  rolls on Amazon.  3 rolls for $175.00.  I overlapped the seams by a couple inches and held it in place by laying twenty 8 foot 2 x 4s over it.  Wind wasn't a problem because the burlap was wet the whole time.  I let it dry out in the sun the last day.  I then put it in plastic boxes for reuse in the future.
John and his crew are the best.  Hire him.  I got 4 quotes from Angie's List.  Two were way high and one was a couple hundred dollars less than John's.  But when I talked to John I had confidence in him and his ability and I decided to hire him.  It's nice to be happy with a decision.  It's even better to have a driveway that I almost look forward to snow blowing this winter.  The old asphalt had sink holes I would slip in.  This driveway will drain well.  The bad clay base is gone and there is 6 plus inches of recycled crushed concrete under the 5.5 inches of new concrete.
I couldn't be happier.  I had an idea of drilling into the garage floor to pin it to the new concrete.  A house down the street had done this with a new driveway a few years ago.  John explained why he never does this - it has the potential to lift the garage floor and damage it.  I followed John's advice.  The other potential contractors were willing to do this.  John's experience was very helpful in planning the work.  He knows what he is doing.  You can rely on him. He suggested burlap.  I was going to use plastic.
Hire John - Cornerstone Concrete - then keep the concrete wet and covered with burlap for 28 days after.  Any concrete expert, including John, will tell you it's the right thing to do, but hardly anyone does.  This driveway will last.

  • We have used Joseph Construction before for concrete work. They have been very good to work with in the past, but admittedly we did not have a problem with the previous work. On this job our driveway got numerous and severe divot's over the first winter on only the area Joseph Construction replaced. We began trying to contact Joseph Construction in the spring of 2014 and I haven't been able to get Joseph Construction to come back out to view the problem or even call back. We started calling them in early April 2014 and emailed them April 29, 2014 which I can produce a copy of. As stated previously, Joseph Construction has not returned or responded to any calls or emails.

  • The provider first came out to survey the work. Then on the day decided on they showed up on-time, worked swiftly, and had both areas of concrete poured by the early afternoon. They returned several days later to score the surface. We are very pleased with tehe results, and would recomend their services to others.

  • They did the work as estimated and went above and beyond as I decided to have a larger apron poured than initially thought I wanted.  They adjusted the estimate which I thought was very fair and was able to pour the 2nd apron without any problems.

  • We contracted with Asphalt &Concrete Buy Knox, Inc. to redo several sections of our sidewalk and they talked us into replacing a 6' x 20' area of asphalt by the garage door in the driveway, with concrete to line up with the width of our sidewalk. The work was started October 25, 2006 but the concrete was not poured until after Halloween in November 2006. The concrete immediately began to show bluish marks below the surface.  These marks were the rocks in the concrete that had worked their way near the surface. Tom Knox first said that our lawn sprinklers sprayed water on the concrete and caused the marks in the concrete! This had not happened because our  sprinkler system was shut off because it was the middle of November in Minnesota and we had already had a deep frost. We did not put water on the concrete and we asked several concrete experts and were told that the problem was in the concrete mixture and the installation of the concrete.  They even predicted that the concrete would soon begin scaling as the rocks popped out!

It took three years for Tom Knox to have that concrete replaced.  Tom told us they had applied sealer to this new concrete.

Again in 2010 we saw the exact same popping and scaling occur on the driveway section.  During all of this time we have not applied salt to our driveway or sidewalk.

Poor quality service consisted of phone calls returned by an office person who knew nothing of the situation and kept telling us Tom Knox would come out and look at the concrete. He would not appear for months and then did not update us. He makes promises to fix the concrete and his second attempt resulted in concrete that deteriorated even faster, within two months time. We asked for the concrete to be fixed or our money back and he refused.

It is now 5 years later and the problems with the concrete have not been resolved. Mr. Knox has demonstrated poor customer communications  by telling us "we  caused the problems by either watering our lawn and  the concrete or driving our cars into the garage in the winter"!  We have made numerous calls and attempted to get Mr. Knox, CEO to resolve this problem. We still have a driveway apron that looks horrible because of the popping and scaling.

We want is a driveway apron that is free of popping and scaling concrete. This is what we paid for and it is what we should receive as consumers.

    **UPDATE 2/2/2012:

We are not in agreement with Mr. Knox's statement that the situation has been resolved. As a consumer, we have not received any resolution or satisfaction. Our concrete driveway still remains in the same condition with pitting and scaling.

  • This was a large project that contained both functional and creative design components. Cornerstone provided practical and affordable alternatives, while incorporating creative design ideas that gave the project a unique and distinctive flair. They were very patient as we asked many questions, and posed many alternative ideas - ultimately reaching a compromise between budget and scope. The project was completed on time and within budget. The estimate was precisely what we paid, and no changes were required, (more importantly no surprises or hidden costs.) As the project progressed, all questions were answered professionally and to our satisfaction. Cornerstone went to great lengths to insure the project was completed to our requirements and consistently went ?above and beyond? to make sure we were a satisfied customer. We?ve encountered many contractors over the years, as we built this house, finished basements, replaced the roof, siding, furnace/AC, etc. This is absolutely the best experience we?ve had.

  • I received several estimates for the project, and Mohscrete was in the mid-level range. Greg's professionalism stood apart immediately at the time of the estimate. It became quickly apparent that he has a passion and love for the work that he does. He had pictures of other work that he had done, and provided insight which we hadn't considered before for the project. The work completed was excellent and we are very pleased with the results. I would highly recommend Mohscrete to anyone. They go the extra mile, and you will be pleased with the quality of the work.

  • Greg responded quickly to get an estimate. His price was excellent and we made installation arrangements. Installation was somewhat delayed, but once complete, we were very pleased with the quality of the work performed. Our driveway looks GREAT!

  • The company gave us an estimate for a concrete driveway. The rep confirmed by phone and was on time. He was friendly and appeared well knowledgable. We received multiple bids and chose another company whose bid was 30% less.

  • they did a very thorough job
