10 Questions to Ask a Masonry Contractor

Masonry reviews in New Hope

Despite it being the busy season they were able to come out within a week, their fee was competitive, if not a bit lower than the average, and they did great work. Revealed two non-functioning fireplaces, one with significant flue damage. Provided photographic proof of damage and a repair cost estimate within hours of the inspection and we were able to negotiate!

Joe and his crew worked hard and did a great job repairing our chimney crown and brickwork. Polite and professional guys - really appreciate their skill and service. The work was performed on-time, per the estimate and everything went as expected.

I bid approximately 10 different people across three categories: landscapers, contractors and masons. The landscapers were stumped given it was structural and it was graduated (grew from small to tall). The contractors were very matter of fact as were most of the masons; demo it and build it with this one brick style that they were accustomed to using. Scott came out and was very self-assured as to how he was going to tackle the project and he explained how he was going to do it and why. Prior to this however, on the phone, he sent us to his website to check out all the retaining walls he had previously done, both structural and more for esthetic purposes (my words) I will say. After he explained his approach, he then got out his brick catalog and gave us a couple of options then he would recommend. Then, he saw that we had a large tree nearby and recommended that perhaps we might want to go with a smooth vs. textured stone so that all the sap and other tree droppings wouldn't cling to the brick. This is the type of attention to detail that Scott brings to the project. He was right on budget, his team was very pleasant and very nice, and they were very clean when they were done. I would use them again in a minute. I am not sure that there isn't anything with stone that Scott hasn't done.

We hired them to completely replace our crumbling chimney and planter. They not only helped us to choose materials that look awesome with our new siding, but were willing to do extra work in order to protect the area around the new chimney until the new roof could be put on. The other contractor we hired to do the roof even commented on the excellent job done on the chimney (and they didn't know each other). The planter looks great and matches the chimney, both have beautiful bluestone tops, a touch of class on top of great masonry. We highly recommend them, and would not hesitate to use them again.

They were there on time and removed old paver bricks and finisher the project in 2 days. After they were done a noticed a low spot that needed to be redone. They were out the next day and corrected the problem. The guys were very nice and polite, Debbie was easy to get a hold off and responded within 12 hours of contacting her. I definitely recommend Twin City Landscape.

It worked out very well. Everything was very good. We had to leave our house for a couple of days, because we only have one bathroom. The man who did the floor was very good at what he did. He left it nice and clean, when he left. We were very satisfied with the floor. We love it. Our interaction with the provider was excellent. He was very nice and polite and very serious about what he was doing. He knew that we had to stay at a hotel and he knew that he had to be as fast as possible. We bought the tile and he did the labor. We paid a little extra because we wanted to upgrade the tile. But it was reasonable and we were satisfied paying that we did. There was one little thing that we didn't like, but we got used to it.

The structural work went well.  The work team of 3 people cut out and replaced part or all of the block immediately around the I-beam.  The result looks clean, professional, and solid, exactly what I wanted.  The cost feels like a good value for the work.
My only complaint relates to clean-up.  The work team did a good job of cleaning up the major mess from the demolition.  However, every horizontal surface in my garage -- workbench, shelving, bikes, snowblower, garbage bins, etc. -- ended up covered with a thin layer of concrete dust.  My car (parked outside the garage) also has a coating, likely from the concrete blocks that they cut outside.
In retrospect, I suppose this is an inevitable result of cutting concrete, but this is my first experience with concrete work.  If I had known what to expect, I would have moved more things out of the garage and I would have covered what remained with plastic.  I also would have moved my car off the driveway and onto the street.   I think the work crew probably should have suggested this before starting the messy work.

It went badly.  I was disappointed that Mr.Forsberg was slow to respond to my initial contact, failed to respond to my attempts to contact him, and expressed enthusiasm he failed to demonstrate.  While I understand moon gates are not a bread and butter project, thay have been successfully erected all over the world for centuries by stone masons with no more skill than Mr, Forsberg claims to possess.  Roman arches are hardly more complicated.  He gnawed a toothpick while he told me he could make $4,000 elsewhere.  I found him condescending and disrespectful.  He changed appointment times 3 times before he finally made his entrance.  I would neither refer nor recommend this provider.

From beginning to end, Greg Pietig was great to work with and offered good advice and ideas.  Once underway, he was on site almost every morning to check on the progress. The result was a beautiful new driveway and a patio that looks like new.  His workmen were competent, professional, punctual and friendly.  The cost was exactly as estimated.  We were very pleased and can highly recommend Crosstown Concrete.

    Arabella Stone Co
Arabella Stone did a great job installing manufactured stone as a facade to our fireplace and we love the real limestone shelves and hearthstone.  Scheduling was flexible (especially useful since I occasionally have to work overnights).  I would be happy to recommend them to others.
