  • Kurt was prompt, on-task, proactive, and personable. In addition to installing a water heater, he hooked up a new laundry sink, straightened out the duct to the water heater vent, installed sediment traps on two heaters, removed a garbage disposal, installed new drainpipes under the kitchen sink, discovered and replaced an outdated dryer gas valve, and replaced a tub faucet. I was prepared for a higher bill with such a long list, but Kurt did not waste any time and the final bill was fair and lower than I had expected. A couple days later I realized the new, direct-vent water heater was generating a loud, harmonic vibration in a bedroom on the first floor. When I called the company, they went out of their way to work with my schedule, diagnose the problem, and arrange for the installation of a new replacement part.

  • I had a Navien tankless water heater installed in 2009 by another contractor. The water heater is exceptionally efficient, though for the last year or so, it intermittently wouldn't deliver hot water. My installer, who provided service during the warranty period, recommended AEI after I learned that Navien had recalled a vent collar.  I contacted Navien directly and arranged to have the collar and an extensive upgrade kit that came with it to AEI. After much waiting for the part, Dustin from AEI took charge. He contacted Navien and expedited delivery of the parts. Then he and Tarik spent several hours doing an extensive rebuild while also doing more routine maintenance and flushing the system. 

    Because of its occasional performance issues during the last several years, I had spent quite a bit of time pondering the complex combination of electronics, plumbing and valves inside the sleek looking Navien box and was somewhat apprehensive about the prospect of tearing much of it apart to install the many parts in the upgrade kit, including a new circuit board (think computer) and lots of valves and fittings.Tankless water heaters are still relatively rare and servicing them goes well beyond what is required for a more conventional water heater. It's not a job for your average plumber.

    I hung around and watched during the entire service visit.  By the time Dustin and Tarik left, I was convinced that AEI was up to the challenge. I was impressed during by both their commitment to doing the job right and their customer orientation. Dustin's technical knowledge about the rather high-tech water heater and his clear explanations were especially reassuring. He declared the Navien to be as good as new and was confident that the replacement of almost all of the operational parts would keep it running efficiently and also solve the intermittent hot water issue.

    Three weeks later, the water heated only to about 90 degrees again. I've learned how to "trick" the system to start working again, but this was not good. The second time this happened, at 3PM on a Friday, I called Dustin. I had to leave a voicemail on his cell phone, but found a message from him as soon as I hung up. As I described the symptoms, he said, "I know exactly what it is. It's a little check valve that mixes cold and hot water. It's one of the few parts that wasn't in the upgrade kit, but it's sticking. I've seen it before and happen to have one in my truck." He was way across the metro on another service call but told me he could be over first thing on Saturday.

    End of story: Dustin came as promised and installed a new check valve. He showed the old one to me and, sure enough, it was sticking. Now I think we have the problem solved and my wife isn't worrying about being caught midway through a shower with suddenly cold water. The bonus?  Dustin didn't charge for the follow-up service call. Now that's service!

  • Our 12-year-old water heater unexpectedly gave up one night, and we awoke to a wet basement floor. Since I had used Dave before on other jobs, I called him at 8 a.m. to see what he could do. By mid-morning, he and his partner were in my basement, and the job was done by early afternoon. They showed me the controls on the new water heater, and explained the function of new valves on upgraded piping. And, Dave also took 10 minutes to fix the slow water flow on my kitchen faucet. Excellent experience all around.

  • Scott's estimate was quite a bit lower than my other estimate that I received, but he made everything seem pretty straightforward.  He has a lot of experience and so there wasn't anything that he hasn't seen before and he didn't make me feel like it was a difficult job.  He said he could get everything done in one day whereas the other estimate said two days. 
    I was a little hesitant at first just because of the lower cost, but it ended up being a good decision.  Scott showed up right on time the morning of the scheduled service.  He had the old water heater out and the new one in right away and moved on to the drain.  That took a little gumption to jack hammer out, but he got it and then laid the new one in and cemented it in.  That was done by noon.  He then moved on to the easier items like the outdoor faucet and the shower plumbing and hardware.  He finished everything up by 2 PM.  He cleaned up after himself very well and everything checked out very well.  He didn't seem in a hurry to leave and made sure that all my questions were answered.  He gave me a quick training on maintenance for the new hot water heater too. 
    Overall, I think Scott Spiess was an outstanding value and I recommend him to others as a good plumber to have.

  • prompt arrival after 30 minute warning phone call.  Courteous, friendly service personnel, went over assessment very thoroughly, answered all questions, made recommendations as to what needed fixing now and what could wait. Cleaned up well, wore shoe covers to protect flooring.

  • I had a really wonderful experience with Weld.  Contacted them through Angie's List when my old hot-water heater died and they responded quickly.  Provided a price quote to replace the heater with a new one, including pulling a permit, at $1,000 -- in line with estimates I received from a couple of other Angie's List providers.  They were available to come out two days later, and they called the day before to confirm.  Nate, the technician, arrived on time on the appointed day and was extremely friendly.  And BOY was he efficient!  To lay down protection for my carpet, carry in the new heater (down a flight of stairs to the basement), drain the broken heater, cut the piping, remove the old heater, install the new heater, connect and weld new piping, shim it perfectly level, and then clean up and test the heater took only ONE HOUR.  I couldn't believe it.  Because Nate worked so quickly, the total bill came in almost $200 less than the estimate!  It's been almost two months and thus far we have had no problems.  I am very very pleased and would highly recommend Weld & Sons.

  • In the end we went with another plumber recommended by a friend.  Jake's price was fairly close to several I received, and he was prompt and courteous in his replies, so I wouldn't hesitate to use him in the future (although I can't comment on his work directly, since he didn't do any for me).

  • I had Todd from St. Croix Plumbing out to help with another problem and had him look at our water heater. He let us know it was at least 20-25 years old, and probably living on borrowed time. We had been contemplating a replacement for some time but as it kept working we just kept putting it off. Well the new regulations regarding water heaters starting mid-April prompted us to get it done. I had called a few different companies for prices, and went with St. Croix Plumbing as Todd had already seen what needed to be done, and I liked his manner and work ethic. When I called to schedule an appointment he was actually available that same day. He promptly came out when scheduled, and had my new water heater in and working in 2 hours. I got a better water heater than I originally thought, at no extra cost. He also replaced a couple old-school values. I highly recommend this provider to anyone needing anything plumbing related. I will definitely use St. Croix Plumbing for all my plumbing needs in the future.
