  • The movers were very professional and friendly. They took great care in moving everything out of the home and loading the truck, as well as unloading for storage. By splitting the move into 2 days they saved us the cost of a 3rd mover. This also allowed us to be at our destination and ready for them the next day. This was our first experience with a moving company and it could not have been better~

  • When they were here they worked all day. However there were many days when they had to go to other jobs and that caused delays on our project. Project took much longer than we thought it would. Had a hard time communicating, many times only got voice mail.Seemed to us the contractor had too many jobs going on at the same time. We did not feel our project was a high priority. Overall we are happy with the results but were quite frustrated at times

  • We contacted Garrett in May of 2012 and he gave us an estimate. In order to do the estimate, we needed to see shingles and we called him several times before he dropped off a book for us to choose from. Some of my dates are exact, & others are estimated due to the passed time.  We called several times to get a start date and eventually he told us sometime the end of June that his men would be there on Monday. No one shows up...all week. My husband continues to call and there's no answer. He left town for the week and never bothered to call and tell us. We have a down spout outside of our bedroom and our bed only fits in that corner. When it rains, we hear dripping non-stop, so we were specific in asking for only 2 downspouts, with none by our bedroom.  Our contract was written up as such.

When the men were nearly done with the roof, they realized that Garrett hadn?t ordered the gutters, so they had to wait and come back when the gutters came in. Garrett wasn?t with his men during construction. He told them what to do, but they didn?t have the written instructions. So I was shocked when I went outside and saw that once again, we had a downspout right by our bedroom. Garrett never told them about us only wanting 2 downspouts, so now we have 4 downspouts again!

The roof itself is beautiful, and as best as I can tell, they did a wonderful job installing it. The installation of the solar tube had some glitches and his right hand man had to come back to repair something, but overall, we are very happy with it.  We couldn?t figure out how to safely get the top off, so when he came to repair it, he showed us how to get the cover off.

However, the bathroom is a different story. When we spoke to Garrett about installing the flooring, we told him that we wanted the flooring to run underneath the sink cabinet and toilet.  We knew that meant using a special saw to cut a hole in the back of the cabinet for the plumbing and removing the toilet and putting it back.  However, when his man came to do the job, before he started, I told him that and he said that once again, Garrett had told him nothing about removing the cabinet. I told him that I didn?t care what Garrett told him, that?s how it needed to be done. Instead, he ignored the ?little woman? (my words not his, but it?s how I felt), and did it his own way. On top of that, he cut the flooring too short and had to go and buy wood pieces to add to the cabinet to cover-up his mistake. My husband was livid when he got home. The man doing the work said that he could only do what his boss told him to do. I asked why he didn?t call him to clarify when I told him what we had agreed upon with Garrett.  His response was that Garrett was on vacation and out of town.  So he doesn?t return our calls, doesn?t give his men the correct instructions and apparently doesn?t accept calls from them either?

My husband kept calling and it always went to voicemail which answered ?the mailbox is full?, so we couldn?t even leave a message!  I figured that he must have another phone and so we called a number in the phone box and my husband had reached Garrett?s mother.  Then he returned our phone call.  After coming out to our home, he finally agreed to re-order the flooring and have it installed correctly. The fan that had been installed made an awful racket and he agreed that it wasn?t supposed to sound that way, so he contacted the company he purchased from and they sent him a new one to replace the defective one.  We found out that the flooring has been in for a while, so we continued to call Garrett and he didn?t answer, so when a friend came over, we used her phone.  We assume that he only answered the call because he didn?t know it was from a current complaining customer.  His answer was that the flooring had just come in that afternoon. Bill (my husband) told him that he knew the truth as to how long the flooring had been sitting at the store where it was ordered.

When Garrett?s man comes over, he takes out the cabinet and toilet and installs the floor.  He clearly was not happy to be there. We wondered if the cost of the flooring came out of his pocket or the time to replace the flooring.  Since he?d put wood pieces around the cabinet when it was cut too short, the cabinet broke in places at the base. Keep in mind though; that the cabinet was not custom level work-it was purchased at a retail store. My husband is not a carpenter, and has tried repeatedly to cover up all the edges that were left showing when the cabinet was put back into place along with pieces that broke out because of it being moved twice.

Not surprisingly, he was not happy about having to remove and re-install the toilet. He didn?t have a seal so he had to go to the store and buy one. I foolishly mentioned to him that I should have painted the wall behind the toilet and he replied that I really should do that and have my husband reinstall the toilet. I assured him that I could live with a poor paint job behind the toilet more than how angry Bill would be if he had to put the toilet back.  ?Besides, I said, he just and should surgery and another tear would permanently disable his arm. He cannot lift a toilet himself.?

It was getting late in the day and I am sure that he wanted to get home. But I pointed out that the flooring hadn?t been sealed next to the bathtub and asked if he was going to finish that. He assured me that he would. I asked him if I should turn the light on for him, and he told me that it was fine as is.

He told me that he was finished, and I looked in and it appeared OK. That evening when I was sitting on the toilet with all the lights on, I looked over at the sealant that Garrett?s man had placed down when he was rushing to get out. A couple of pictures are attached.

I realized that Garrett had given us no information on the roof tile warranty. If we had a problem, and Garrett was still in business, and around the area, it shouldn?t be an issue.  But it occurred to me that if something happened to Garrett, I?m sure that his wife wouldn?t deal with old customer?s warranty problems. While Garrett has several businesses, it could still happen that he?d either lose or quit the business or even move to a different area.  I didn?t think that I was asking too much for a copy of the warranty. I looked at several websites and thought that I?d found the right roofing tile manufacturer. On the site, there was a downloadable warranty form, so I printed it out and completed the form as best as I could.  There were about 6 questions on the form that only Garrett could answer, so I sent him the form with a letter asking him to complete the form or to send us another one if this was the wrong company. In the letter

I asked him to mail back whichever form was correct with his information completed along with a self-addressed and stamped envelope. It would have been so easy for him, but even that he didn?t do for us, so now I have no warranty information.

Our problem with G. Benz Contracting wasn?t as much the work as his complete lack of communication with his customers, and his employees. Our roof looks good, and other than the vanity being damaged, and the caulking looking bad, Garrett did pay for and had the tile his man cut too short replaced. He failed to call us when he told us he would, to let us know that the staff wasn?t going to show up as he?d told us, failed to order the gutters, and when he did, he ordered too many downspouts. In doing so, and not informing his staff of our request that was on his order sheet, we now have a downspout by our bedroom wall.

Every single problem we had was caused at least initially by his exceptionally poor communication and not caring at all about how the customer felt when he never returned phone calls or took weeks to do so.  I recommend that you find another contracting company for your work.

  • I think it went terribly. They first showed up app. July 10, 2014 for what was estimated by him to be about one week of work. There was some demo above and below the roof line on the chimney. No consistent daily start time or continuation seemed to happen. We left our house open for access after being told they would show up, they did not show and the house was left open for 3 days when we were out of town. This out of town trip was 1 week past the estimated finish time of the job. Changes in the way the job was going to be done were agreed to by me several times because the company owner had made some errors in the original estimate. The job was finally finished August 10, 2014 after once again promising to show up and failing to. There is no way I would ever use or recommend this contractor again.

  • We had a new modular cabin built at our lake place, and we needed an electrician to install some lights and make corrections to the main power box.  We'd had a very poor experience with the last electrician that we had hired so we asked our neighbors at the lake who they would recommend.  Jeff Purdy's name was the name each one gave us.

Jeff returned our calls promptly, and he arrived when we expected him.  These are things we have generally expected from professionals we have contacted, but I assure you that we have found them to be rare qualities in companies and individuals that offer services in the Orr, Cook, and Tower areas.  It seems as if they really don't care if they get business or are concerned about having a good reputation.  Jeff Purdy clearly has a great reputation with us and our neighbors.

We were so pleased with the electrical work that Jeff did at the cabin, that we have hired him twice to come to Eveleth to do some electrical work, rather than call someone local that we don't know.

Jeff's business is in Orr, so as we expected, he had to charge us for driving time for the 60 minute drive time each way. That is to be expected when Orr is so far from Eveleth, and we have no problem paying driving time, especially for such a competent contractor.  Jeff tries to schedule jobs in an area together, to decrease the driving costs for his customers, as well as it being a logical and sound practice.

Jeff is VERY professional and we have had no problems with any of the work he has done for us.  We highly recommend hiring Jeff Purdy for any electrical work you might need done.

  • Rob responded in a timely manner. He showed up when promised and did the work |in a professional manner. The only problem was that the Big Deal was for 2 hrs of wallpaper removal for $59 and it took him an extra hr for an additional $65. But given that we got the 1st 2 hrs for a good price, it was still a good deal.

  • Master Lock claims that this bar when placed under the doorknob will withstand up to 350 lbs of force from the outside.  I bought this item to keep my daughter safe from a maniac who threatened her life and then stole her keys on Thanksgiving!   So we placed it according to the directions and then tested it.  If failed miserably - my daughter was able to kick the door in herself.  The bar popped lose as the button popped out of the bar.  Very disappointing!!

  • I found Mr. Freeberg on Angie's List. After contacting Mr. Freeberg, he was prompt in meeting with us at our home. We found him to be very cordial and professional. We agreed to a color of shingles, what would be done and a price. Mr. Freeberg and his crew showed up on 10/27/12 and started the project. The project was completed on 10/31/12 which comprised of shingling, taking down the gutters and reinstalling them in a more correct manner and replacing some rotting boards on my garden shed. The work and cleanup met my expectations and more. I found dealing with Mr. Freeberg to be a good experience.

  • Larson construction put on a roof that leaked in my kitchen and bedroom. Took took a court and the owner said he caulked the problem. Put a metal roof on the following year, VORTEX metal and love it. Don't hire Larson construction!

  • They are really good about contacting me every year to schedule to come out. They are really good at what they do. I have 2,5000 sq ft of area, so I think they charge me reasonably. They have been very good to deal with.
